Skelaghe – Female Wolf

Lush Grasslands
It has been several days since Skelaghe last wandered through the grasslands. Unlike before, though, she is not hunting this time. Rather, she's actually just wandering. Her pace is leisurely and she does not devote quite so much wary attention to her surroundings, though she remains on top of things. If she wanted to daydream, she would at least lie down first. Rather, if she were /going to/ daydream, she would at least lie down first. There is hardly a better way to spend waking hours than daydreaming, and a part of Skelaghe will always want to do just that, but she doesn't always give into the temptation.
Conner has been lingering in this part of the grasslands for a few days, having been chased recently from a nice old hollow stump he tried his luck under a patch of brambles, digging down a little "foxhole" as it were and passing in and out thru a hole in the thornpatch. It was this little home he had made that he was headed towards now, in his mouth a fresh juicy vole he'd caught all by himself. HIs bushy tail wags as he trots along the very same game trail she was using, on a collision course.
Skelaghe is quick to catch the familiar scent of the young fox, along with the blood and fur of a prey animal. Knowing how jumpy animals can be when they are hungry and have a hard-won catch nearby--after all, just a few days ago, she was the one willing to defend her prey to the death--she barks out a friendly greeting while she is still well out of sight of the fox, though the sounds of his pawsteps and his scent have reliably marked his position for her.
Conner paused and perked his ears outside his den a moment, his tail holding very still as he appraises the bark and just to be on the safe side starts digging quickly. Digdigdigdig! Kicking dirt between his hind legs as he scrambles, by the time she would see him he was nosing the dirt back over his catch and looks up with a little grin and a yap at the wolfess. HIs tongue lolls with a happy grin. "Well hi miss wolfy!" he chuffs.
Miss wolfy? Isn't that just adorable. With a grin, Skelaghe approaches Conner, stopping when she remains several feet away, yet, and sitting. She is always conscious of appearing nonthreatening towards smaller species. Unless, of course, she's about to kill and eat one of them, but that can't be helped. "Good day there, Conner. You know, you have a little bit of dirt there on your nose." She sounds moderately amused, but she is far form making fun of him. Hiding one's catch is a great way to protect it in a short-term manner when faced with an unknown creature.
Conner blinkblinks and tries to get a look at it, only going crosseyed a moment and he just dips his muzzle bashfully and paws at his nose a bit to wipe the dirt off. "Heh, oops...err..what brings you back out to the grasses?" he asks, perking his vulpine ears and peering at the lupine with a slightly playful twinkle in his eyes. He couldn't help but be rather fond of her, she' was very sweet and she hasn't tried to eat him or run him off yet or smash him underpaw in any sort of way which always brightened his day.
Skelaghe has never really been mothering material. Which is good, because the chances of her ever becoming a mother always seemed rather slim. She was in charge of teaching the younger generations of her pack in their spiritual traditions, however, and she has always had a soft spot for both smaller and younger animals, and Conner certainly qualifies, which portrays itself in her tone and demeanor. "It's about the only place left where I can seem to get away from daily obligations and just relax for a few moments."
Conner grins brightly and rises a bit, his tail wagging swiftly behind him as he peers at her. "Well glad you came, I've been lonely out here and was hoping maybe I might see you sometime.." he grins sheepishly and trots a bit, closer, craning his neck out to almost touch his nose to the wolf’s with a sniffasniff before settling back once more. He glances at his den and splays his ears. "I'd invite you in but you'd prolly have to hunker down real low to get in...those long legs of yours.." he chuckles.
Skelaghe grins widely and lies down, placing her head on her forepaws and still looking at the young fox, as if to illustrate that she's perfectly fine where she is. She back this up with a verbal statement. "I do not need to enter your den, Conner. Here is fine." In the mountains, perhaps, a wolf might need more protection. Even in the forest. However, out here, she is likely to be the largest predator around, and she does not need the young fox's den for safety. "Do you not have any friends or family nearby?"
Conner humms and shakes his head after a moment’s thought, rising only to shake any dust from his digging out of his salt and pepper fur. He grins a little at her, clicking his tongue. "Nah, most animals don't stop here in the grasslands long so it always seems very quiet.." he trills a little. "Albeit a little bit lonely some days but not today!" he gave a happy yip and plopped back down, canting his head at her.
"That's too bad. Someone as young as you shouldn't have to be alone. But you're right. Not today." Skelaghe may feel some sympathy, but it doesn't really show through, mainly because she doesn't figure it would be appreciated much. Her head lifts just slightly off of her paws so that she does not have to peer upwards quite so much, but she remains lying down, apparently quite comfortable.
Conner grins brightly and makes a single bound closer to her then hops away before hunkering down on his belly nose to nose with her, perking his ears up tall and blinking curiously at the wolfess. "Issokay..I keep myself occupied and there are lots of rodents in these grasses to catch.." he licks his muzzle with a proud little puff. "I dunno how you get any sleep living in those big packs!" the fox todd gave a little laugh.
Skelaghe chuckles softly. "Actually, I don't know how animals sleep all by themselves." She has had a hard enough time of it in the season since she has been in these lands. It is easier to rest when she has companionship, even if it's only in the form of one wolf. "I spent most of my life surrounded by family and packmates, whether I was waking or sleeping. It doesn't bother you, when you're used to it."
Conner humms "I suppose not if you're used to it..I think one cozy warm someone is good enough, more than that and it's just too much shedding and snoring." he yips a laugh and grins at her. Stretching his forepaws out with a yawwwwns and half rolling onto his side with a feline like sprawl. "mmf.."
Skelaghe grins widely and says, "Just wait until you're older and have your first set of kits. Shedding and snoring is nothing compared to being woken up by little ones crawling all over you, tugging on your ears, and whining for you to play." Does she really miss it that much? She'd scarcely had time to realize, with how busy things have been since she came to these lands. Of course, she's not one hundred percent certain that male foxes take an active role in raising their young, but she thinks they do.
Conner smiles a bit and splays his ears, nosing at his forepaws slightly as he humms "Well that could be fun I s'pose...though it doesn’t seem to be many female foxes about and the ones I have seen certainly didn't show much interest..." he huffs a little "they weren't greys though like me...maybe that’s why...maybe I'm not as handsome as the red males wandering about.." he furrows his brow a bit and splays his ears at her some.
Skelaghe shakes her head quickly. "You're one of the most handsome young foxes I've ever met, Conner. You'll find your mate, but there's no reason to rush it." He is, after all, still young, too young to raise kits of his own. "And you're an excellent hunter, besides. You'll be a great provider for your future family." A brief reference to the prey he hide just before she arrived.
Conner feels his ears warm and splays them more with a bashful grin at her. "Really? Ya think so? Well I knew I was a great hunter.." he sniffs importantly and hops up to bristle and puff and look as big and tough as he can a moment. "Master of all I see!" he yaps at the surrounding brush and shrubs then flashes another sheepish, fangy grin at her.
Skelaghe laughs at his brief display. "See? What young vixen could ever resist that?" She sits after playing to his young ego, if only to bring herself back to a point where she can easily converse with him without holding her head at an awkward or uncomfortable angle.
Conner laughs and deflates a bit, flopping back down into the grass sending a few strands floating up on the breeze. His tail swishes back and forth behind him, always having to release energy somehow. "Sooo...what are your plans for the evening, 'sides makin' lonely foxes blush and wag?" he adds with a little snicker. Blinking his dark eyes at the wolfess.
Skelaghe does seem a fair bit calmer than Conner is, but she is also older and she spends her days travelling wider distances than she's wholly accustomed to travelling. "Well, I didn't have any plans until I ran across you, and making lonely foxes blush and wag seemed like an excellent way to pass the time."
Conner laughs "agreed!" he chimes back and huffs a bit thoughtfully. "Hmm...well do you know any nice spots nearby I might not've found myself? Always looking for an interesting place to explore...I found some old boulders at the edge of the hills but was afraid they might have snakes.." he shake shis head and ducks it slightly. "So I didn't go alone..heh.."
"I am not actually terribly familiar with the grasses. You probably know your way around much better than I do, so perhaps I should have been the one asking you that question." Skelaghe can find her way around several key landmarks in this area, including the river, the lake in the mountains, and the cougar tribelands to the south of there. Beyond that, her sense of smell is the only thing that keeps her from getting truly lost.
Conner nods a bit and perks his ears some as the winds shift. His nose twitching a little and he flashes her a wily vulpine grin. "I should be off..more voles to find while the finding is good!" he bounced up to his footpaws and approached the larger canine, gently bumping his head to hers. "I'll see ya around soon I hope?"
Skelaghe smiles softly to him, nosing the young fox lightly as he headbumps her. "Just don't forget to eat the one you have while it's still cute." There's no better way to compliment a young creature than to remember something he has said and prove that you've remembered it. She stands, prepared to walk away should he decide to do just that, and says, "I'll check in around here soon, hopefully with an exciting area I can share with you.
Conner grins brightly "Deal!" he yips at her and twirls once in place before shooting off into the grasses with a goodbye bark, his long bushy tail vanishing last, just a stirring portion of grass left in his wake. She could year the fox yapping his goodbyes as he bounds off.
Skelaghe laughs once more as the young fox darts off before turning to follow the path she was on before she caught the young fox's scent.
