- Pine Grove -
Having spoken with Rikmokri the other day, Thrash is making his way through the lands to find Kein, and to tell him about the encounter with the odd, pale white cougar. Pushing himself up against the bark of one of the pines, he works an itch out of his shoulder, letting out a soft grunt. "Stupid bugs." He mutters to himself, before galloping forward through the grove. It has been far too quiet lately, and he finds himself growing restless, and bored because of it. He needs some excitement.
Kein has kept his habit of solitude. It just seems to be working better for him, these days. Oh, he checks in on Nayeli regularly enough, but he cannot help but feel tense around everyone, her included. As he walks along, traveling almost-silently through pure habit, he catches the sound of someone running nearby, and heading almost directly towards him, so in the moments he has, he settles himself with a deep breath and a stretch.
Bouncing over a fallen tree from the snow storm, Thrash stretches himself out as long as he can before landing, then takes off once more as a quick blur. With Kein being a recluse, it has been up to him to give all the ladies a proper wink, and croon in their direction. He can't help but playfully flirt now and then, but for the most part it has all been innocent, and he has left all his snuggling for Maul whenever she wants it. As he slows down his pace once he catches wind of Kein's scent on the wind, he pauses in mid trot to look around. "Kein? I can smeeeeell you."
Kein recognizes Thrash's voice easily enough, and he responds automatically with a chuff, before answering verbally. "I'm over here." It only begins to occur to Kein that he could probably still wander off and not be found, but he knows as soon as he thinks it that he would never do so. Despite his desire for solitude, recently, there is no reason for him to avoid Thrash.
Ears perking upwards, Thrash heads over into the direction of Kein's voice, swaying as he goes with a bit of a boasting grin upon his face. "Hey 'dad', what's up?" He asks as he flops back to his haunches, giving himself a good arch of his shoulders upwards to pop the errant joints. "I'm bored." He says, tilting his head.
Were that any of his children like Thrash. Kein has seen Thrash's somber side, but not very often, and his mostly upbeat manner would probably be a pleasant break from the norm, were it not for Kein's own moodiness. Moodiness cultivated by years of trying to protect and provide for unappreciative and troublesome children, his own and others'. Even as it is, he manages a thin smile, and he says, "Perhaps I ought to put you to work more often, since boredom seldom leads to more than one thing." Oh yes. As soon as they are born, Kein intends to convince Aurora and Kaya that they need Maul, at least, and perhaps Thrash as well, to look after their children for a while.
"Sure! Put me to work. What do you have on your mind?" Thrash asks eagerly with that same grin upon his face as his tail sways side to side behind him in a whip like manner. Ears lifting upwards like radars, he sniffs the air a bit. "Oh! I met another cougar the other day, she says her name is Rikmoki or something.. white, very mystical. She says she has been hanging out here for quite some time, waiting for the right moment to introduce herself to you. She was really weird, called you arrogant also." He says with a twinkle in his eye. "She told me to tell you that her time for hiding is over and she wants to meet with you."
Kein's smile fades as soon as Thrash begins telling him about some strange cougaress. Although he has no concrete reason to feel as much, he cannot help but be anxious. Attempting to keep most of this to himself, he responds, "That is far from being the worst thing I have been called. Where did you meet this cougaress?" And what will it take to go there and greet her with anything other than claws and teeth bared?
"I met her by the lake, she kinda came out of no where, telling me that I fail at fishing." Thrash says as he flops back upon his haunches. "I think she also called you a boar." Amused, he gives the chieftain another grin, as if amused by it all. "But, she at least seems to be quite blunt, and honest about herself. That and she did gave me some insight about myself, sorta, in a way." Pushing his paws into the ground firmly, he kneads it with some anxious energy. "She reminds me of my grandma, practically as old as her also."
"Well, since this female seems to know so much about me, perhaps it would be good if I met her sooner, rather than later." Arrogant. Yes. A boar? Possible, since he is not restricted from greeting a female with every bit of the aggression he would use in greeting a male, when he views it necessary. The fact that there is some stranger out there describing him as these things does not help him to set this aggression aside, though. Nor does it ease the feeling that he may, very well, be walking into a trap. "You'll accompany me?" It is not a command, no, but it is close.
"Of course I will, I'll back you up against that crusty old cougar, in case she attacks you with some dust." Thrash says with a bit of a bounce upon his paws. "But, I don't know where to find her though. I haven't caught her scent since then, it's like disappeared or something. Maybe she's a ghost." He says as he sniffs the air a few times, then gives his muzzle a bit of a lick. Giving himself a bit of a shake, sending out a puff of fur into the air from his shed, he says, "Check it out, I'm almost as big as you now."
"There are still some things you'll have to learn if you hope to protect yourself and my daughter effectively, Thrash. It's simple enough to know that there are times that cougars lie. It's more difficult when you're standing in front of one who can do it expertly, and I've no doubt this cougaress kept your attention firmly away from the rest of the area, where something more dangerous than one old cougaress may have been waiting." Paranoia such as this wears on Kein, yes, but it has also kept him and those he cares about alive and safe, at times. "Of course, growing up a bit more couldn't hurt you either, so you'll stay behind me when we go to visit her. No reason to goad her into an attack prematurely." And it could be, of course, that Kein is simply overreacting to being insulted. He hopes so, anyway.
"There was no other scents about when I met her, and I even sniffed about the area just to make sure. I wasn't born yesterday, Kein." Thrash says with a grin on his face. "My father was just like you.. always talking about securing the perimeter, take no quarter! Aim for the throat! Keep your chin level to the ground, never strike first, use their strength against them." He says as he gives his pelt another firm shake. "I know I may act like a goof for the most part, but I'm just as much a soldier as you trained Cael to be. Trust me, she's old, she's not a threat, I think she just wants to give advice, and lay about in the sun. Sides', being that she is as old as she was, and having no clue of who I was, why would she risk her own life to speak with me when I could very well have killed her."
"Because I have stayed my paw enough times to give them reason to attack my own daughter, Thrash." Kein cannot keep himself from growling as he says that, as he remembers Kaya returning, injured and frightened. "Because I have never taken the fight outside of my territory before, not for any threat. They feel safe, and it's /my/ fault they feel that way." True, Kein would have left his territory ages ago to confront the threats to his family, were it not for Nayeli, as well as others, insisting that he shouldn't, but he doesn't blame them. He blames himself. "I'm not suggesting we go there and kill her in her sleep. I'm suggesting that we exercise caution, and that you understand that there are animals out there that would see me hurting, even at the expense of others who are dear to them."
"Well, maybe if you put more trust in some males, you'd have more soldiers about to help keep this place protected. You can't very well do it on your own. If you were to have been ganged up on, two, three on one.. then it'd be all over for you, right?" Thrash says as he gives himself a bit of a stretch, before finally settling back upon his rump, winding his tail about his haunches. "You seem to have a reputation of chasing every single one of them out, thinking they're after your daughter's tail."
"You're here, are you not?" Kein takes a step back, distancing himself from Thrash as he speaks. "Peyote is here. Qaletaqa is here. Who else would you have me trust, hm? Who would you have me invite into this territory so that, when someone is killed in her sleep, it is not the stranger at the lake, but rather someone /I/ was meant to protect?" Kein shakes his head as his growl returns to his voice, and then takes another few steps away, his alternative to taking his current aggression out on Thrash. "I am not building an army, and certainly not an army of children who have no blood ties to the matron. That is not what this land was meant to be, and if my life is the price it takes to keep Amaranth, both the land and the meaning, safe, then I will pay it, Thrash."
As Kein turns away, Thrash rolls his eyes upwards at the melodrama. Kein and his father are so very much alike. "So, anyways, you wanna go do something or what? I'm still bored." He says, trotting after the retreating chieftain. "How about if we spar a bit? I haven't had a good tumble in awhile, and maybe you'll teach me something." He says with a grin on his face, ears lifting up excitedly.
"I don't fight for fun, Thrash. Come. Let's just meet with this stranger of yours, and then we can go on about our days." Given the distance from the lake, and how long it may take to track that female, it may be several hours, yet, before they are finished handling it. Kein keeps at a pace that won't wear the both of them out, but he has no desire to drag this on longer than it has to be.
