Creek Overhang
================================================================================
The ground rises here, making a small cliff that hangs a few feet over the river below. The ledge drop-off is wide and sturdy, supported by the packed earth of the riverbank, and able to hold the weight of even the largest of creatures. The overhang is somewhat secluded, making for a peaceful place to just lay in the grass, listen to the singing birds, and watch the trickling creek nearby.

He'd slept, and slept well, though the kind of sleep he experienced was a light doze in the mid-afternoon sun. When he awoke, he and his sister were still paces apart in the grass, and as he rose and stretched the sleep from his muscles he looked at Anu with a strange expression. The she wolf had fallen asleep, and from her relaxed muscles and deep, steady breathing, Anu was far off in the realm of sleep, practically impossible to disturb. Tyr's eyes were soft as he watched her for a few moments, then shook his pelt and trotted silently off into the woods. There, pounding paws chased after a frightened hare, and a single squeal and heavy growl heralded another successful hunt. The prize hanging from bloody jaws, Tyr found his way back to his sister and gently did he set the kill down by her haunches. He swiped his muzzle a few times then delicately curled up behind her, his shoulder pressing against hers, his back legs tucked up against her hinds, and he settled his head on his paws and, after a time, began to dream again.
It took a long while for Anu to believe Tyr was really asleep, but after watching him breathe slowly and rhythmically for so long, sleep dragged her under. It's a rest she's needed for days, and her mind could no longer fight off the needs of her body. She's totally oblivious to her brother's movements. The shewolf doesn't even stir when he curls up next to her, she's so deeply asleep. It's several minutes thereafter that she finally awakens, her groggy eyes blinking open. It is then she realizes she's fallen asleep in the first place, and a bolt of adrenaline shoots through her. Frantically, she looks to where the male used to lay. He's not there. She notices the hare - a goodbye gift, perhaps? Her body turns cold. Has she lost him already? - Oh. No. He's right beside her. Heart hammering, she tries to determine his motive. He could have escaped. Why did he stay? Why did he hunt for them? Too many anxious questions for a sleeping wolf. Anu pulls herself up onto her paws and sharply noses him. Wake up!
Like before, his rest isn't quite the deep and pleasant sleep of dreams, but instead it is light yet strangely satisfying. Anu's first movements don't stir him, even as she tenses stiffly, then panics and rises. Tyr grunts once, placing one lanky fore leg over his nose, but then he is nudged, roughly, and blinking at the backlit Anu, he snorts, "Wot?" Then he yawns, a great jaw popping action, before beginning a routine of rubbing his muzzle with his paws, chewing at his shoulder, then stretching out his back legs, all while remaining on his stomach.
A yawn slips from her lips. Anu allows herself to sit, though her eyes are trained on her brother. "Why didn't you run? You had the chance," the shewolf asks directly, skipping the part where others might issue a 'Good morning'. She's never been one for subtlety and she's not about to start now. Tyr must have some sort of reason for this, and it'll gnaw at her until she discovers it. What's more is her frustration - she doesn't care for this guessing game at all.
"Because I don' wan'to," Tyr drawls, a great sigh falling from his muzzle as he groans and pushes himself to a tall sit. For a while he doesn't do much else, save gnaw at his thick fur and trying to either thin it, or straighten it, but he hasn't quite lost his heavy winter coat yet. Another sigh, and he gives his sister that withering look, his eyes then falling to the hare at her paws, "Eat," he says again, this time the word is filled with... affection, dare it be called love?, for his sister. "Yer need it."
To say Anu looks confused is an understatement. He doesn't....want to run? "Does this mean you're coming home now?" she asks carefully, trying to make sense of it. What else could it be, right? At the mention of the hare, her belly rumbles hopefully. It's true, she does need it, but this won't be the first time she's put her body's needs on hold. The carcass is given a glance, and she looks away as soon as she feels herself salivating. Priorities, Anu.
"No." Tyr's voice is flat, emotionless, but luckily for Anu (or maybe for the both of them), there is no anger or warning in his voice. It is just a statement, steady eyes matching Anu's own, unwilling to yield to the she wolf or look away from her. There is, however, a finality to the statement, indicating that no matter what Anu tries, he will not yield. Another glance at the hare, then to Anu, and he nods. "Anu," it is a command, but strangely gentle, "Eat." Please.
Anu isn't accustomed to such tenderness, sparse though it may be. It dampens the anger she should be feeling over Tyr's refusal. Her gaze drops to the lifeless hare, and she studies it for a moment before opening her jaws. She tears into it hungrily, making short work of it. Gulping down mouthfuls of meat, she finally pauses to lick blood from her muzzle. "Why..." does he keep feeding her? "...did you do this?" she inquires. Once again, she just /can't/ understand his motive. He's not stupid enough to think that this will bribe her, convince her that she should abandon her mission. So what is this? What does he gain?
"Yer not takin' care of yerself, Anu, how d'you expect to keep up wit'me, mm?" Tyr churrs ruefully, breaking the military-like demeanor by scratching at his side with a hind paw, grunting in the process. Sure, it's partially an apology, too, but Tyr would easily leave Anu far, far behind in just a day or two if she hadn't managed on her own to hunt and rest up. He's /not/ going back to their pack, and if Anu wants to live much past the next moon, she isn't going back, either. Maybe one day she'll understand; there's so much more than what Akh has taught them...
Making her way along the creek is Wyanet, striding with her usual lumbering gait, quiet, and taking her time to breathe in the new scent that she has caught within the lands recently. Tyr she recognizes, the other, not so. As the large timber wolf with the torn ear makes her way into view, she lightly clears her throat to announce herself once she pushes through the thick grass. Her eyes fall first upon Tyr, then over towards the female, eyes lingering to take in her markings. "This your girl, Tyr?" She asks point blankly. "Or is this one of your father's soldiers who is here to try and take my lands?" A tiny smirk toys along her muzzle.
A look of shame blooms on her muzzle. No, she isn't, but only to bring him home. Now that she's found him, she can afford to take more rest and eat her fill. Imagine how much longer this would take if she had a leisurely journey? Why, she would probably still be looking for him. Her reply is never expressed, though, as the other wolf appears. Eyes narrowing, she scrutinizes the newcomer. She scents the air, trying to determine if this is some kind of attack. Did she bring friends, perhaps? It's useless, though - her nose is full of the dead hare. Better safe than sorry, the shewolf tenses, ready for anything. "The latter," she barks tersely. She looks about ready to knock that smirk off the other wolf's face.
One of Tyr's ears splays to the side, then Wyanet's familiar voice greets him, and though he is on good terms with the Ute alpha female, he is on edge. Anu's reaction is expected and unsurprising, but only to Tyr; whatever the Ute wolf thinks of it, well, he is sure to know in an instant. His reaction, though, is to stand sharply and cut a few steps in front of Anu, barking tersely and loudly. "Anu!" Tyr's lips pull back, canines flashing a stern and familiar warning, before a slow and calming blink is given to Wyanet. "M'sister," he introduces, though he glances at the she wolf next to him and a deep, low breath out is his final warning to her. You are outnumbered here, sister.
As Anu makes her statement, Wyanet lifts her chin upwards, sending her only ear forward a bit, and a look of amusement fills her face. Instead of appearing aggressive, or angry, she just simply lets out a soft chuckle. "You are lucky, young pup, because if this was only a winter or two ago, I'd have torn your face off, and attached it to your backside, but I'm trying to do good now by the great spirits. I made a promise to someone before she died to tone down the killing." As Tyr announces it is his sister, she dips her head forward. "Anu, I am Wyanet, Alpha Female for the Ute pack, mate of Hahtalekin. It's nice to meet you."
Anu's lips twitch in return, flashing her own teeth. Two can play that game, brother. Her eyes also hold a shimmer of disbelief. He would /defend/ this strange female? She's not like them! She's not family, she's not of their pack. Granted, Anu is probably even angrier because this female, this Wyanet, has the /gall/ to laugh at her. Instead of returning the greeting, she offers a low growl. Tyr or not, this shewolf will not be mocked. Moreover, she's sick of Tyr bossing her around. She'll fight Wyanet if she damn well wants to, alpha though she may be.
Fine. Let the world teach Anu the lesson she deserves to learn. Tyr is not a teacher. His eyes are dark, and as he looks at Wyanet they hold a subtle warning behind them; it is not there to tell Wyanet to back off, but to warn her of the inevitable. Then, wordlessly, he relaxes his tight muscles and sits back on his haunches, his spine straight and head perched high on his neck. He could be a regal wolf, one day, but first he has to finish babysitting his sister. Tyr blinks, casting a sidelong glance at the female next to him, and says nothing. Anu can pick her battles; whether she can win them anymore... well...
Tilting her head to one side, Wyanet shifts her shoulders back, and forth slowly, then pushes up to all fours. Slowly dropping herself down a bit, she ducks her head to guard her throat, peeling her black lips back to expose the sharp fangs of her teeth. "Like I said." She growls out lowly. "I made a promise, but part of it also meant that I'd do -anything- to protect my pack. You don't want this fight, so calm down, /now/." She says with authority in her voice, and dominance in her stance as the fur bristles about her neck, and shoulders.
"It's not your pack I have a problem with," Anu snarls. Her gaze flicks from Tyr to Wyanet. Yup. Just those two, right there. She doesn't really trust her brother not to gang up on her if she goes after that other female, though. No, it'll be much better to take the smug Wyanet by surprise. Perhaps while Tyr is resting. Ah, yes, she can just see it. Perfect. And so, Anu backs down with a hint of a smile. Her lips cover her teeth, her muscles relax, and she sits all proper - just like her brother. See? Look. She's being nice.
"Ask yerself why, Anu," Tyr growls deeply, his voice low and his lips quivering in his attempt to keep his anger in check. The last thing that he wants is a repeat of earlier, for his whole purpose for leaving his family behind in the snow was to become something -different- than a mindless soldier. Ask yourself why you do the things that you do... Though she settles, the rigidity of his shoulders does not release, but he does manage to look at Wyanet again, eyes much less dangerous than a moment ago. Like his sister, like Wyanet, the male can turn his emotions on and off, almost like a switch, and go from one extreme to the other. "Wyanet," he barks sharply, a quick forward salute of his ears before, frustrated, he stands and turns from both she wolves. Tyr snorts and stalks off into the deeper woods, expecting Anu to trail behind him.
