Characters:
Wiraqu - male Cougar
Lily - female Cougar
Setting:
Smooth Plateau - Late Spring (RL day 8)
------------------------------------------
It's been a long, wandering journey for Wiraqu. The cougar's mostly been taking it pretty easy, though - unless someone's chasing him, he's been moving slowly. As he is now, on a bright day in late spring, wandering among the patches of brush with a lazy saunter and looking around for signs of any occupants.
As well as it's been a long morning for Lily. She happens upon this area, and comes to a stop at a time just convenient enough for Wiraqu to notice her without her noticing him first. And she's grooming one of her paws, even a practical creature has her faults. Constant need to look tidy being one of those faults. He may have the drop on her, she's not looking in that direction at all.
Wiraqu pauses, one forepaw lifted in the air, as he notices another cougar. Well, this could be good, or it could be time for another of those rapidly moving segments of his journey when someone takes offense to having him in their territory! The other is a female, at least, which reduces the chances of being chased away immediately... worth a try. He grins cheerfully, and saunters a few steps closer before calling out, "Why, hello there!"
Lily passes for a space-case most of the time, so she doesn't really have a coherent territory to speak of. But Wiraqu's steps make her freeze like a statue, expecting something to chase... She turns her head when she hears him speak to her. And then she twitches one ear, and steps up closer, and sits a few paces away from him. All she says, in an unsettling dreary monotone, is, "Hello."
Well, this is... promising in some ways, disconcerting in others, to Wiraqu. He's certainly not being run off, yet, which he rather approves of, but this cougaress is oddly calm... no, beyond calm... about the whole thing. He sits down, curling his long tail in around his legs and giving the tip a flick. Should he go business first, or... nah. "How're you doing? Seems like it'll be a pretty nice day, today."
Small talk, huh. Lily's expression goes from almost sleepy to the obvious 'oh?' look; widened eyes and a canted ear. She even looks up at the sky to take note of the current weather. A dip of her head brings her eyes back down to look at the male cougar before her. Her teachings say she shouldn't give very much energy to a male. She visibly considers the question, with more seriousness than most would manage for a trivial question like that. "My left foreleg's fur has been disorderly, but otherwise I'm healthy." She sounds a little less dull about this.
Definitely a weird one, this cougaress. Wiraqu keeps up his cheerful grin, and nods his head at her answer. "Ah, well, that's a good thing." He lowers his head, peering at the mentioned limb and the disarrayed fur there. "If the body reflects the mind, perhaps you've a small tangle in your thoughts," he then says, looking up again. "Or perhaps it's just a bit of the chaos that's part of the whole world. I wouldn't know!"
"Or I stepped in a stream and it didn't dry correctly," Lily mentions, and now that she's got her mind focused on it again, she just can't leave it be. She starts grooming the fur down, just as she had been trying before she was interrupted. Very meticulous. It doesn't take that long, though, to fix the 'problem'. She looks up at him, contemplative. Probably the most emotion she's shown so far. "You are very friendly. It makes me wary of your intentions," she tells him.
Wiraqu laughs. "I suppose that would be a more practical sort of answer, yes," he agrees, and then watches as the other cougar finishes grooming herself. He chuckles at the - well, it's sort of an accusation. At least, it's questioning his intentions, which often comes along with accusations, though in this case, it seems more vague curiosity than hostility. Which he's not going to argue with. "Ah, of course I'm friendly. Why wouldn't I be? It's a lovely day, there's a lovely lady - with, I might add, all her fur in order - and all seems well with the world."
Lily finds some dry humor in what she just heard. Ah, compliments. Flirting. That's not something she enjoys hearing, but from an overtly cheerful male, it's so predictable that she can't quite get angry at him. "A lovely lady," she repeats, a twitch of her tail to mark her ambivalence with the words. "Careful." Precarious, that word. Either bound to make him angry or nervous. She's showing positive emotion toward him, though, no matter how well she tries to hide it. The light hint of a smile, the more energetic tone to her words-- as energetic as she can get, at least.
Wiraqu tilts his head to the side slightly, noting that twitch, that warning in her expression that's echoed in her words. And yet, that face isn't telling him to start running... So he lowers his head in a slight bow, though his eyes keep steady, and smiles. "A healthy one," he says, repeating her own words from before back to her, and adds, "With all her fur in order."
Lily starts to laugh a laugh that sounds pretty girlish. She can't quite keep it back. She gives a silly grin at the cougar before her, seeing him as something of a new method of her entertainment, instead of some sort of enemy. "I am Lily," she introduces, finally, shaking her head slowly, "And I would like you to stop flirting with me."
Wiraqu grins back as he draws that laughter out of the cougaress. Amusement, entertainment - he's quite fine with being those things. Much better than enemies. "I'm Wiraqu. And, well... I can certainly try not to flirt. But I don't know that I'll be terribly good at it," he replies, with a bit of a laugh. He seems to actually be trying to be honest about that - there's none of the coy looks that would make it seem like further flirtation.
