Ayita has been staying close to the rest of the herd as Tort directed she should, currently kneeling in the tall grasses on a rather windy day in early spring, the flowers finally beginning to peek out from their winter hiding spots. Whinnying to no one in particular, the paint filly promptly nibbles off the head of one of the newly-reborn flowers, munching quite happily at the tasty leaves. A couple of other mares are gathered around behind her, grazing as well.
Ehawee has been wandering a lone for too long. She lost her daughter ages ago and holds little hope of ever seein the child again. As the wind blows past she continues trecking forward, head down. She stops suddenly twitching her ears forward. She raises her head looking over the hill. A small herd, well thats new around here.
A butterfly flits through Ayita's line of vision, and almost immediately, the filly drops what she was doing-er, eating-and jumps up onto all four hooves, before rearing back on only two. Pawing at the air behind the pretty blue butterfly, though careful not to swing her hooves too close to its fragile body, the whinnies loudly, the couple of mares around her pausing in their own eating to turn and look at the younger mustang, their ears pricked forward attentively.
Ehawee watches the mares in the distance, one small one in particular. She twitches her tail from side to side ears perked forward. As a breeze pasts she raises her head to take in the scents. on in particular catching the mares intrest...it couldn't be. Not thinking clearly she begins walking, then troting forward quickly breaking into a breakneck run towards the herd.
Tort is nibblegrooming Starlight as the activity starts. First, Ayita catches his attention with her great butterfly battle, and then the growing thunder of an unknown mare's hooves. The stallion breaks from grooming Starlight to watch the approaching mare as she breaks into a full gallop. The stallion takes a step or two from the herd in the approaching mare's direction, protectively a bit between the herd and the galloping mare. She seems ... intent ... on something ...
Ayita remains oblivious to the fast-approaching mare for a while, before the thundering of hooves on the ground grows loud enough to pull her childlike attentions away from the pretty butterfly. Dropping back down to all fours, she swings her head to look over at the source of the sounds of heavy pounding. Her ears swivel forward, entire expression alert as she focuses on the galloping mare - who's colored quite similarly to herself. "Mommy?" As recognition hits, the filly neighs even louder than before, rearing up a second time in her excitement.
Ehawee closes the distance offering a loud excited whinny. As she nears she slows down her pace twitching her long tail this way and that, "Ayita!" Excitement over takes her as she dances around the filly looking her over making certain that this is her baby.
Tort stays near Ayita, remaining cautious and protective. As she seems to recognize the mare as her mother, Tort tries to confirm by asking the mare he's never seen before with a cocked head, "Ehawee, I presume?"
"Mommy!" Ayita prances her way forward as Ehawee draws near enough for the two to meet not far from the herd's current location, quickly trotting up to her mother's frame so that she can nuzzle against her long neck. "I thought I might never see you again," she confides in a worried tone, pressing her neck up against her mother's. When Tort speaks, Ayita glances back as though she had forgotten the other horses were there, but composes herself quickly. "Oh, mommy! Remember how we were always looking for a herd? I finally found one, so now you can stay here with me and Tort and Starlight and Imbri and everyone else!" she fires off in a fast rush of excited words.
Starlight lifts her head from sleep, woken by the excitement. At first confused, it takes her a few minutes to make the connection between Ayita and the strange mare. She shakes her head to clear it and smiles at the reunion. She lets the two reunite, and lets out a contented whinny, leaning her head against Tort.
Ehawee nuzzles and rubs her neck against her daughters. With the mention of a herd she pauses taking note of the stallion for the first time. She flicks her tail a tad on edge now, but they did look after Ayita. She dips her head in a simple silent answer to the stallion giving him a questioning gaze.
Tort gives the mother and daughter their space, but nods warmly to the mare. "I am Tort, leader of the recently formed Sagebrush herd. Ayita is a most welcome member among us, along with seven others, not including myself. When Ayita mentioned you, her mother she had been seperated from for so long ... I honestly feared the worst, that you might have ... succumbed ... to something, but I felt if you were still alive, her being in a herd would be her best chance of finding you ... I am very glad fortune has reunited you," he nickers. He motions to the mare beside him, leaning into him, and nickers to Ehawee, "This is Starlight, our lead mare." He leaves it to Ehawee to approach more closely if she chooses, otherwise allowing her and Ayita their space.
Tort's words fly over Ayita's blissfully ignorant ears, the filly continuing to lavish her long-lost mother with affection. After the stallion finishes speaking, she finally detaches herself, tail swishing from flank to flank as she pleads: "Mommy, you wanted a herd, didn't you? Please stay here with me!"
Starlight nods to Ehawee with a warm smile. "I am glad you've found your daughter. Welcome, Ehawee." she nickers, dipping her head slightly and flicking her ears. Her tail gives a flick and she nuzzles back into Tort's neck.
Ehawee watches all of the various horses She nudges her daughter thinking about it. The most she can offer is a "We'll see...but I won't leave you again, thats for certain."
Tort nickers, "I certainly hope both of you will stay. There are more ears and eyes to look out for each other within the herd than without."
Ayita pouts up at her mother's long face. "I'd like to stay with my new friends, mommy, and I think you might like them all too," she protests gently, nosing at her mother's chest. "Maybe you can stay here for a bit and see if you want to stay for good?" she asks with a look of pure hope.
Starlight looks to Ehawee. "You are both welcome to stay if you so wish. It is safer in a group, but we will not force you either way." she smiles. "And if you decide against it, these plains will always be open should you change your mind."
Ehawee looks her daughter over regarding the stallion on last time, "I think thats a fair idea." Headbutting the filly she steps forward and offers a greeting to the others, "Ehawee."
Tort nickers to Ayita, "Its your mother's choice, honey. This is a happy day for the whole herd." He turns and drapes his head over Starlight's shoulders in a sort of hug. "I believe this is a good sign for our herd," he nickers softly into Starlight's ear.
Ayita remains standing by her mother after she replies with at least the possibility of joining, and nods slowly to Tort. "I know...I just really want us all to stay here together, both family and new friends," she replies, giving another nuzzle to Ehawee as they stand around in a feel-good sort of atmosphere.
Starlight nods softly, and smiles. "Indeed it is. A happy reunion may also mean for us a larger family." Starlight nickers softly, and continues to watch Ayita. "I never did find my daughter, but perhaps here...I will have a chance at a family again."
Tort quietly remains, his head still draped over Starlight, contemplating ... family. He quietly gazes over at Ayita and her mother ... Ayita looked different, with her mother. She didn't look like a /filly/ at the moment, but a dam's daughter. It reminds Tort that, with the fair weather of spring upon them, it wouldn't be long before Sagebrush would start producing its own foals ... /his/ foals ... sons and daughters. Sagebrush would then no longer be a gathering of horses huddling together for protection, but a family ... with a future.
