Summary: Still searching for Johari, Halidari and Lykaios come across Jolon who isn’t too pleased about having wolves in the territory of the feral dog.
Scene
Nestled behind an elm tree, Jolon is asleep. The sun is on its descent; evening is approaching. A shaft of sunlight rests on his eyelid, causing him to wake. Growling quietly, the elkhound stirs and looks around him. Sketch is nearby and the male sighs with relief. She looks so peaceful when she is sleeping. After a moment, he gets to his paws and gives his fur a shake. Stretching, he tries to see if anyone else is awake in the copse.
This mad raven has been many places, seen many things, her life surrounding the secrets of others. Certainly this raven is aware of her bizarre behavior, her love of rhyme, and being as cryptic as any prophecy. And now here she is, perched on the elm, looking upon her next "victim."
Lykaios has been in the area for a few days now. He is not terrible at tracking, but he is not used to doing it over long distances like this, and he is no longer so certain about where he and Halidari ought to be going, though he's trying not to show it. It was a lot easier when they had just started on their journey and there was only one logical, vague direction in which to search. As he walks vaguely southward to meet back up with the female wolf, his tail and head are low, as he hasn't yet found anything to go on in order to help them continue on their way.
A few days have gone by now and the scent of feral dog has become ever more present. Lingering in the area any longer than needed was not part of Halidari's plans, in fact leaving as soon as possible has become a top matter on her list; however being too hasty could mean missing something. Trudging through the parted brush, the female wolf keeps her senses sharp as she searches across the tree laden plains for a fox; a member of her family. Ears perked, Hali hears the return of Lyk in the distance or least she hopes it’s him. Keeping a close eye on it, she continues north though not without looking over and under everything.
The raven is unnoticed by the dog, he doesn't think to look up. Suddenly, he detects the scent of wolves. Wolves. Near the copse. Glancing at Sketch, he feels his hackles rise. What are wolves doing here? Is it a fight they want? Jolon's muscles tense. What if there are more, waiting close by? A low, rumbling growl starts in the elkhound's throat. He spots one! Sniffing delicately, he determines it is female. "What is your business here?" he snaps as he takes a step toward her. His ears swivel as he speaks. Where is the other wolf?
This raven chortles to herself in a rather smug, self-satisfied way. Such wondrously worried creatures dogs are. All this judgment passed just by this one small thing, a dog acting worried. This raven prepares for her entrance, finding her groove, so to speak.
Lykaios has grown mellower as he approaches adulthood, but hearing a gruff voice in the direction where he last saw Hali is enough to trigger a more aggressive mood in him, along with a fair bit of worry. Lifting his head slightly, he quickens his pace considerably to check out the nearby voice. He is not so concerned with going unnoticed as he is with making sure Hali is all right, and both the female wolf and the dog should be able to tell where he is well before he's in sight.
She knew if she was here to long that eyes would be turned her way, it was only a matter of time. Just a little farther up the way, Hali hears the voice she had hoped not to hear; the one she hoped would just let her pass. Her ears falling to her head, the female wolf in pause, turns to glance at the dog and his question; the other sound in the area had to clearly be Lykaios, if not then she was in certain danger. Keeping her distance fair from the appearing feral Hali gives response. "My business is of none of your concern." And neither is her manner it seems. "However..." she continues glances around the shaded figure of Jolon. "My objective is not to create conflict between us; it is simply to pass through." The wolf may still be young and a bit reckless, but if she were going to attack she would of done it long before now.
Jolon's growl turns into a snarl, "Then I suggest you keep walking. Do not linger here any longer." Sizing her up, he waits for her to make the first move. Aha! Noise! The other wolf is nearby. "And what of your friend, is he 'passing through' as well?" The male is entirely still, every muscle tensed and waiting. Wolves just 'passing through', yeah, right. What is their real objective? A simple fight? To steal some of their land for themselves? There must be some other motive.
"A passerby is passing by, until a shout does break the lie." This raven intones and flies down to the ground and shakes her wings before neatly folding them. "If trust them do you not, then allow them shall you not."
Lykaios is set further on edge by the voice from above, just as he is coming within sight of Hali and the dog near her. Lykaios responds more to Jolon's snarl and body language than he does to the actual words, what bit of it he caught well enough to piece together. The young male growls quietly and attempts to circle Jolon, only with the intention of placing himself beside Hali. Nothing else is important, especially not some bird, until he is by Hali's side to protect her and back her up. He doesn't say anything, as the initial fear and worry that coursed through him combined with being in unfamiliar territory has removed any ability he might have developed to talk and reason things out.
"So harshly spoken, is that really necessary." Hali speaks calmly, "If we were here to cause harm don't think we would of done it already.." Looking over to Lykaios as he arrives in an aggressive manner, she takes a step back shaking her head. "My friend... He shall do the same." she says in gesture to Lyk to settle himself. As much as she would like to put the dog in his place, that would only bring the long awaited conflict between the two into reality. "We’re here to find Johari, Lyk, not cause trouble." Hali tells the male wolf looking back over to Jolon and slightly up to the bird over head. "You'll see that we mean nothing but to pass through with no trouble, I assure you. Whether you choose to believe that is up to you."
The bird has a point and the male wolf's proximity is almost enough to break the last of his control. No, let them make the first move. Listening intently to their conversation, he says, "We have not seen anyone or anything worth looking for. Go." His last word is almost lost in a growl. How badly he wants to leap forward and teach these wolves the danger of trespassing! He might be able to take one, but two? No, and the admission of that wounds him. The last thing he needs is to end up dead. Then who would take care of Sketch? Glancing at the raven, he mulls over her words. The male is torn. What is the best way to protect not only himself, but his friends?
"A friend you may find, when you stop being so blind." This raven chimes. Not entirely making sense, but caring not. This raven preens her feathers a little bit before speaking again. "An invader is invader all, and may lead to your fall."
Lykaios doesn't see that he's the one causing trouble. The young male glances to Poe, his eyes narrowed, before looking back at the troublesome dog. He is still growling quietly, still prepared to defend himself and Hali, but he is not going to attack Jolon without further provocation. "Fine. Back away and we'll leave." His tone is rough, and he looks like he has a hard time reacting even this calmly towards Jolon. They have no reason to remain here. They haven't seen any sign of Johari, and it /is/ well past time for them to move on. Still, it's hard to respond to aggression with anything but the same.
Why must one always assume the worst when encountered by one presumed to be the enemy? This she'll never have an answer for; nor will she ever be given it. Flicking her tail, Halidari looks up the tree to where the raven perches and says a few things of her own. "Trust not the words of that not known; Trust not which is sung by those to afraid to reveal their face. Judge not from a distance but from the width of one’s grasp." The bird is not the only one who can speak in chime. Turning from Poe and back to the fellow canines below, Hali blinks. "If you have not then that is fine, but do not perceive us as one to fight. Hush your motives, your ill tempers; for they shall only bring ill fate." Taking another step back the female wolf begins to turn.
What is the raven on about? Urg, it's just being more confusing now. Are they friends, or should he strike now? Jolon wishes the bird would stop meddling. To the male, he barks, "These are /not/ your lands. You do not make demands." His lips pull back to reveal fangs. How dare he! Such disrespect! Oh, great, now /she's/ speaking in verse too. Is that a female thing? It's frustrating, regardless. He doesn't dwell on her words, but can't hide a smug grin as she turns. Ha! That's right. You walk away.
This raven, wishing to see a fight, knows just how to play the system, or so she would like to believe. This raven clacks her beak a mite. "A coward flees from a winnable fight, what's there to gain from such a flight?" this raven intones with a cackle. "Another monster from the dark, would you be the one with the spark?" This raven makes a point of ignoring the wise female.
Lykaios has never been real good at responding to tones like the one Jolon uses. If he were, he likely would have never been forced out of his natal pack and to these lands. It's bad enough that he is not inherently passive when it comes to hostile situations. The tone Jolon is facing is worse. And that stupid bird referring to Hali and himself as cowards is just the icing on the cake. It's almost against his very nature to back down, which is what keeps him frozen in place even as Hali begins to turn away. Were it not for her presence, he would have attacked long ago. When he finally does move, it's to take a cautious step backwards, as he has no intention of turning his back on this dog even for a moment.
Halidari stops in mid motion of leaving to hear the Raven once more. "One flees from a winnable fight because it is pointless to shed the blood of one who shares a common interest." It would be foolish to think that she hasn't guessed the intentions of the bird. Poe wants to see what Hali wants to prevent. “These may not be our lands, and our demands may not need to be followed, but it is also wise to restrain from needless battle.” She says looking back to those she's became to walk from. “Our kind may not see eye to eye, but that does not mean that we can't get along in times of passage. Had we come seeking blood we would’ve not taken the time to even speak. Think of us wolves as you might, but not all of us are mindless savages searching for a fight where ever we may find it.” Looking to Lykaios, “Let’s go Lyk. Dog and Wolf can clearly not coexist side by side. Acting upon this one’s anger will only prove that we are no better than them.”
/Now/ the raven makes sense! Yeah! The cowards are leaving, heh. And the male is smart about it, too. Jolon almost respects him. Almost. Grinning with superiority, he calls, "Good luck with your search!" Pfeh, let the female say what she will. Words are meaningless and he won't let her insult hurt him. If she really meant to prove anything, she would have attacked. Besides, she's wrong. Dogs and wolves /can/ get along, so long as they stay on their respective sides of the borders. The sooner she learns that, the better.
This raven cackles with glee, but does not go anywhere, just watching the altercation. Her sped word has made its effect. If not now, maybe someday.
Up until now Lyk has had no idea that any of this may have been because of the fact that he's a wolf. He never had much familiarity with dogs when he was growing up, and his sole experience with them since coming to this land was tainted by that illness, but was otherwise not bad. It's just one more instance where his utter cluelessness would have gotten him in considerable trouble, had Hali not been here to bail him out. Not that he would admit this one dog could be any real threat to him. If there are more of them, though, if they travel in packs as wolves do, even he could not fail to admit that he would be in danger in that situation. The young male forces himself to continue moving, backing away from what could have easily turned bloody until he is far enough that is should be safe for him to turn away.
With her words seeming to go though one ear and out the other, Hali keeps herself from doing exactly what is being purposed of her and like himself. It would prove nothing to go against the offering of peace even when there was none. Keeping where she is, only moving away if she moves at all; Hali keeps her eyes on the dog; he doesn’t mean that, and she knows it. "And may you find what’s to come." A threat, maybe, but one is to never know. Waiting for Lyk to come along side, she says nothing further. How beneficial would it of been to attack one dog when the possibility of having the whole group after you as an aftermath; Hali isn’t dumb and certainly not weak for wanted to leave rather than use force. Turning once more, Hali keeps her ears back incase anything should happen with her back turned.
Jolon keeps his eyes trained on the wolves. His posture is a little more relaxed now, with them on their way out. The female's threat makes the elkhound smile widely. If she wants to back that up, he'll be waiting-- and he won't be alone. Flashing his most sinister grin at Lyk's retreating form, he makes his silent promise that if they should meet again, things will not end as peacefully as they did today.
