Wachiwa - Female Wolf
Helaku - Male Wolf
----
Helaku
Rain. It poured over the land, benefiting scent as much as detracting from it. Wet winds carried certain smells and yet mostly carried none at all. In the rain, the markings of the departed alpha were not so easily found with the nose, and Helaku came upon this land in likeness to his father. The trunk of a fallen cottonwood tree served as his promontory. For whatever reason, it hadn't completely fallen, stuck a great leaning tower of wood. The white-eyed, scarf-wearing mytery wolf 'sat' at its end, eyes closed as he thought back to what brought him here so long ago. It was a solemn occasion, for the journey from the Redwood Barrens was completely in vain. It was a day like this he left home, the day the council of Alphas sent him on a mission to find Alpha Helaku. It was, however, an effort to be rid of him. He opened his eyes and stared at the ground beneath him, trying to listen for the sounds of animals obscured by the rain.
Wachiwa
The rain is welcome at least in that it drives away the biting flies that otherwise plagued the woods in the heat, and for that one could be thankful. It does, however, make it hard to get traction while hunting; but it doesn't stop Chewy from trying. Breaking from the brush comes a large hare, eyes wild with fright, charging across the land among the trees, weaving. After it shortly breaks Wachiwa, pelt heavy with the rain, legs getting muddy from the grass and earth, and she's closing in, just barely. Trying hard to catch a meal for the sake of catching a meal? More like trying to catch a meal for the sake of stock piling.
Helaku
Something in the wind. Helaku heard it, and not far was it from his current location. The rush of a bush, the thump of a small animal. He couldn't tell what it was or where it was heading in this tempest, but he knew then he wasn't alone. Not entirely. His ears perked as he stood on the end of the nigh-fallen tree, listening evermore, watching. Would whatever rustled the bush come running by?
Wachiwa
The hare is flagging; and Wachiwa is closing in. It hits a skid trying to turn a corner, as does Chewy; the two, in eternal struggle, soon come into view of the log, and the hare, seeing the other wolf, thinks itself a done duck. It whirls and tries to u-turn around and dash past the she-wolf, who slips and slides in the muddy ground, but catches her footing and lunges in a leap. She lunges, snaps, and a scream comes; but she's only successful in catching the hare's leg, which she clamps her teeth down on hard, despite the lapine kicking and scratching with vigor.
Helaku
How interesting, a show for him that happened to star a wolf who looked familiar. And a hare that wasn't so familiar. The hare was no doubt thrown by him standing there, though he didn't intend to be so...helpful. He watched from his perch as Wachiwa fought with the hare, curious to see how she handled it in such conditions.
Wachiwa
Kicked in the face several times, gettign scrapes on her muzzle, Wachiwa first bobs her head several times trying to avoid further kicks, then crunches down, breaking bone with an audible snap. She drops her head, plants forepaws and weight on the body of the hare, and then dips her head. A sharp crack comes as she wrenches the head with her jaws, ending the hare's plight. She holds it still a moment, eyes closed, then slowly sliiides into a sprawl on the ground, ears back, huffing. "Great Spirits, thank you for this catch.. Friend Hare, thank you for your life.. Ancestors, thank you for your luck." She murmurs breathlessly, before laying her head down wearily. She can take a moment or two to rest, surely.
Helaku
It was time. Helaku silently lept down from his view. Mud splattered under his paws as the weight of his lean form precisely landed before Wachiwa. By no means was it a large distance to drop, but the calm and expertise he did it with was worth a note. Little Wachiwa, worn out from her chase...what better opportunity would he have? Ears alert and forward, those white eyes descended upon her as stoic as before. He said nothing...yet. He did not growl or snarl. He merely looked.
Wachiwa
Still panting, one ear twitches at the sound of something landing, and she opens her eyes, staring at the wolf before her, ears laying back. What on earth-- no. Not someone from the pack, but someone she doesn't really trust either. "... You're on Ute land," She says, breathlessly, "And I'll kindly ask you to leave please, unless you come with peaceful business, sir," She says, watching him, blue eyes narrowed, but she doesn't posture with hostility.
Helaku
Helaku looked straight back into her eyes, the calculating thing he was. Something within this strange wolf existed that evoked the sense of something ancient, powerful and merciless. It was the White, the same color of snow and harsh winter, living and breathing with every subtle nuance in his gaze. Wolf to wolf. Eye to eye. On Ute land? Very well, then. "This land is my land as much as it is yours," he answered, "daughter of Ixkin and Bodhi."
Wachiwa
Ears lay back, and Chewy, though seeing that white winter in his eyes, does not respond with respect; instead she responds with a low rumble of hatred for Winter, something she has never liked, and never been able to like, even when her other littermates and packmates tried to get her to play in the snow. But she doesn't growl at the wolf, she growls at the winter inside him-- he is cold. And she is suddenly not happy. "It is not your land, 'Helaku', it belongs to others. You are not Ute anymore, your time is gone, as is the Storyteller's, as she left to be with the spirits when I was just teething. If you're a ghost, an apparition, I don't know, don't care. But I can tell you are not a Spirit I should feel respect for.. You don't earn respect by coming here and making claim to belong any more than your foxy friend will get respect by lying to us to try and cause trouble. I'll say it again.. Please leave."
Helaku
Not Ute anymore? She was unaware, and it was not her fault. "You are quite right that I'm no spirit," he answered, his eyes not leaving her. She may through at him what she will. He'd not give her scorn for it as she did nothing to deserve it. The wolf stood as he was, not approaching or leaving. "The fox is no friend of mine, nor am I making a claim," he said. "Your father gave me kindness where few did, and your mother likewise was a great wolf for her loyalty. Even through your defensiveness I see much of Tobba...as much as Alpha Skelaghe."
Wachiwa
"My father and mother are dead, too, 'Helaku', so I cannot confirm nor deny your claims of knowing them. And as Skel has been gone for two winters, I cannot confirm your knowing her, either. Her name is well known. There is nothing to say you could simply be trying to get into good graces for bad reasons. That's why I don't trust you... But I'm not going to... Be rude about it. That's why I'm asking again. Please leave. And if you won't, then don't be all like that fox and yell at me if I have to chase you away.. I'm only trying to protect my family." She pauses, and looks to the hare, and back to him. "I'll even give you this hare if you leave peacefully.. I was just taking it back to the pups, but I can catch another when I get my breath back.."
Helaku
"Yourself and the pups need the hare more than I," replied Helaku. Finally, he moved. That move was as thus: he sat. Right there. The wolf known as Helaku...sat. He had more to say and say more he would. "Perhaps a clarification needs to be made," he said. "I am Helaku, the son of Alpha Helaku, mate of Alpha Skelaghe, and Beta of the Ancient Ute. We share the same name, and same ancestry in regards one particular pack. It is most fortunate we meet here alone. I've a question specifically for you if you'd be so kind to answer it."
Wachiwa
A sigh. Well, Chewy can hardly fault him for being stupid, he's male, and for some reason every darn male she's ever met with the exception of Ikuna and Tokota has been stubborn and stupid. And Tokota was only an exception because being the omega he was scared of everything. She closes her eyes with annoyance, then slowly stands. "And I am Wachiwa, daughter of Bodhi and Ixkin. We've discussed our liniage, sir, and I told you. Skel is dead, and no one here has ever heard of you. Your claims are as easily proven as they are disproven; and since neither outcome can be reached, your words mean nothing. I cannot allow you to stay, especially having heard your 'claims' about my family the other evening, especially when you will not come outright and forthright and speak to our Alphas. I will answer only one question. And then I request you leave.. else I will be forced to try and chase you off, to keep the peace here.."
Helaku
Helaku gave no sigh at her constant barrage of antipathy. The seasons had hardened him against stern remarks and the like. "I was unaware we were ever in a state of non-peace," he answered with an authoritative, nearly Alpha tone. "Keep mind to your elders, Wachiwa. The words I spoke the other day were not in condemnation or disgust, but in commendation and respect. Of the last the last three pairs of Alphas to lead the Ute--that being the New and Ancient-- all of them except Alpha Skelaghe died a most horrible death be it from disease, suicide or murder by beastly entities." It was then that Helaku actually did approach, maintaining that dominant air that seethed from him. "Ute survives despite these things, regardless of how many of its members die. The pack survives just as my father wished it." He slowly peered off in the distance. "As for no one here knowing of me...I still wonder if Crescendo remains among the pack or if the winter killed her too." And then, back to Wachiwa... "The fox. He crossed y path again and spoke of you very ill. He tried to sway me to agreeing that you should be punished for...how he said...attacking. What is your side of the story?"
Wachiwa
Ears lay back. Yeah, she knew she hated that fox. "Cres is still around.. but she's talking about laving soon.. She's old, and has seen many puppies come and go. I think the recent death weighs heavily on her heart," Chewy says, in a rare moment of softness. Crescendo, who taught her everything she knows about raising puppies right, and who she had hopes some day might help her with her own puppies. But now, Chewy is the pupsitter, and the pack is.. changing. She frowns, though, turning serious again at the tone of Helaku as she recognizes it-- Alpha's words, but he is not her Alpha. She utters an uncomfortable growl. "As I said. The fox came to our den, and I asked him to leave because the leaders were not around and I didn't feel comfortable. He said he wouldn't leave, and when Asku came, he began making up stories about Asku to try and upset me, his little brother, and a wolf who has come to be a part of us. He said Asku was leaving -- but we all knew Asku wanted to see the lands outside the pack for a while, we'd been talking about doing it together before his mom and dad suddenly died. I mean, we just grew old enough to stand on our own paws this spring, what newly adult wolves don't like to wander occasionally? And when that didn't work he said that Asku was badmouthing his brother, which I know Asku would never do. We asked him to leave again two more times, and the Fox just kept lying, so I gave him a puppy's reprimand. You know, I shoved him to the ground and mouthed his nose a little so he'd realize he was misbehaving. I'd never /attack/ someone unless they gave me no choice, it's like, so totally rude and stuff. He began yelling about excessive force, and walked away." She frowns though, hearing of this plot against her by the fox, then says simply: "He was the one causing trouble. I gave him a rebuke meant to chastise, not injure, and he is turning it into a war."
Helaku
At all of this, Helaku's muzzle turned to an approving smile for the first time. It was rare he had anything to smile about, and this occassion warranted it. "I knew he wasn't so innocent as he claimed," said Helaku, his ears forward and centered directly on Wachiwa. "And you are right that he is turning the incident into more than it should be. Just as you may have reservations concerning me...the fox seems to have this odd idea that I'm here to cause unrest and discourse among the Ute. No...quite the opposite. I've no interest in claiming titles or positions of power." And then he sat again, his body oddly relaxed. "And my reason for declining your offer the other day...not before the fox would I accept that. Never know for what party a fox ferries messages for, if at all."
Wachiwa
A frown.. But Wachiwa does admit; a rare thing: "Well I kinda thought you meant ill as well, c'os like, what you were saying was really creepy and stuff, plus, like, Haht and Wya just died, and they like, raised me after my mom an' dad died when me and my bro and sis were like, young. So.. Like, I'm totally not cool with it when it sounds like someone is talking bad.. they were like.. My parents away from parents." She sits down again, taking a moment to sneeze away the rain as it falls, then she says, "I still think you should talk to Skah and Shawnee though. I told'em you were around and I thought you were here to cause trouble like that fox.. So uhm.. Skah and Asku will be comin' to find you eventually if you don't come yourself." She frowns a little at her paws sheepishly, then adds, ".. I'm like, totally all new at this adult thing, and takin' care of the pups is about all the good I've got, and with the sudden death and all everyone's all kinds of uptight."
Helaku
"I assure you my dialect was to prevent the fox from knowing too much about my intentions," said Helaku. "I speak in such ways whenever in company I'm not familiar with or trust--but you being of Ixkin and Bodhi weighs volumes. I can't say my relations and memories of Haht and Wyanet are good--less in the way of Haht...most of it was Wyanet. What she was to you and what she was to me before they became Alpha are opposite as Summer and Winter." He ended that topic right there and then. Yet, he leaned a little closer to Wachiwa and whispered in a hushed tone. "It was very nasty...but at the time I was also new to being adult." He winked on that note. "When you mentioned Ixkin being your mother, it earned you favors although I intentionally failed to show my relief of your relation. Your mother was the last of the Ancient Ute to see my father alive. His ending wasn't a happy one."
Wachiwa
"Most ends are not very happy for someone," Chewy says, with wisdom that most would not expect of her, considering her usually somewhat easily distracted mind. "Some are just unhappy for a lot more people than others. I'm sorry your dad is gone. But I'm sure he's among the Great Spirits." She smiles weakly, tail wagging a bit. "We all go there eventually.. I don't know what happens after that, but I guess it's happy there c'os no one's ever come back to complain!" She grins. ... Yeah. That's.. Normal chewy. .. But she does add: "... My mom always taught me it's better to be nice than to approach everything being mean. Plus I like being happy more than I do always being growly. I leave being grumpy to Skah, since he's Mister Grumpy, buuuut don't tell him I called him that."
Helaku
Speaking with Wachiwa was perhaps the first time in a long time Helaku felt comfortable around another wolf. They were not speaking in ranks anymore, but just as wolves. As relaxed as he was, this wolf was one that couldn't drop his formalities in speech. "He at least died in the Ancient Ute land," said Helaku. "But...onto current matters, might we? You should be taking your hare home soon, and give a report to the pack. I may not have say in your young generation's rankings, but one old Ute to another...you being adult now...would be most fitting that since you found me that you'd be my escort when a meeting can be arranged?" Smooth talker.
Wachiwa
The hare is looked at and for a moment Chewy almost picks it up! .. then she remembers it's hard to talk with your mouth full, so she just sets a paw on it for the time being. "Yeah, I should probably get back where it's drier," she admits. shaking her head again to try and releive some of the rain from her ears, "And uhmm... I don't think it'd be a good idea for me to escourt you, you're like, older than me and stuff, plus I'm kind anot really looking into boys at the moment. I'm waiting till the pups are older and don't need someone watching out for them all the time before I decide what I want to do with my life and stuff." She smiles a bit, then says, "I can't introduce you to Skah and Shawnee at the moment... They went off to.. well uh. Be Alphas." Sheepish grin. "Probably at the waterfall where it's drier."
Helaku
He stared at her for a moment. Was she thinking he made a pass at flirting? Well, she was attractive and whatnot, but that wasn't his intention! "Oh, no, I mean for you to assist me to being introduced to your Alphas when that time arrives," he said. "Whether it is soon or late." He gazed at her and the hare in an awkward silence. A benevolently awkward silence. "...though I am flattered when you say you're not looking for males...can't say anyone's made that remark before."
Wachiwa
Sheepishly Chewy remarks, "Sorry, just... My mistake." She grins slightly. ".. A lot of the boys in the pack I grew up with and stuff, they're all either really my brothers or almost like brothers, so it's like, thinking about boys is sooo weird." She grins, and shrugs. "Anyway, like I said, Asku and Skah will probably be looking for you.. So.. Be nice." She dips to pick up the soggy hare then, and muffles something, before she turns and starts trotting away.
Helaku
Helaku watched her go, this talk having been a great relief. "I will see you again soon, Wachiwa," he said. And then he too turned and walked off, away from the land to go back over the territory line.
