This scene may be unfinished or complete, depending on the decision if it should be finished, as it is mostly finished.
Askuwheteau - Male Wolf.
Helaku - Male Wolf.
-----
Helaku
The scent of rain was fresh on the air. The mist of the evening seeped among the trees and bush, nearly covering the ancient trail on which Helaku stood at the border of the Ute land. He had made an entire circumference of the old boundaries, searching for signs of this pack's expansion or regression of land. It hadn't changed much. The borders were still the same as they were back when...The white-eyed wolf calmly peered up at the overcast sky. It seemed to follow him where ever he went--mist, rain...and snow during the midfall and winter. Almost as if...bound to it. For a brief moment, he heard the voices of those past..was it just his memory or something else? Helaku closed his eyes, thinking on it. He saw his sire a few times before he left for this place so long ago. So far, and yet so close...
Asku
Beside the older male a voice does in fact speak, It is Askuwheteau, He who keeps watch, appearing out of the fog as if he himself were just mist rising up off the ground. And he does not look happy. He does not bare his fangs or snarl, he does scowl however and there is no warmth in his voice when he speaks. Only a business-like tone that makes it clear he does not feel this new wolf belongs on his packs lands, "Who are you? And what are you doing here?"
Helaku
Who was he? That was a good question. At the same time, Helaku didn't much care how happy this wolf was that he was here--only that he realized he was. The young one wasn't one of the originals, and therefore suffered for it. Business was business, and Helaku responded with the same tone he gave the troublesome fox just days prior. "I am Helaku," he answered, "And what I do here depends entirely upon you."
Asku
Askuwheteau was in no mood for games or dancing around a question and he took a slow step forward, "Well Helaku, do you mean to cause my pack trouble? Or are you here for another reason? I did not ask what you intended to do, I asked what you are doing here. Why have you come? That in point of fact does not depend on me, and the fact that you just tried to sidestep my question does not speak well of you. It is cause for me to believe that you mean harm to my pack."
Helaku
"Oh...no... you misunderstand me," replied the white-eyed wolf as he peered at Asku with a most eerie gaze cold as the winter snow. "Much do you misunderstand it is no sidestep but a question of 'your' intentions for the influence of certain individuals within the pack in seasons passed caused internal problems. The correct word is not 'my', but 'our'," he said. "I've returned to this region after seasons away. Regretably, it seems all who knew me long ago have departed. One or two may still live, but I doubt this."
Asku
Askuwheteau turns his head to the side slightly, looking the older male over with one eye, it was a slow calculating look. Then in very measured tones Asku inquired, "You are claiming to be a part of the Ute pack, but in the same breath you claim there is none who can corroborate your story. My intentions are not in question intruder Helaku, This is my pack and these are my packs lands. That is a fact. And there are those who can testify to that. You cite that I have misunderstood you, if that is the case then speak plainly!" on his final note Askuwheteau's words are clipped and angry. He was still not aggressive, but the cryptic way this wolf spoke was fast wearing on his last nerve.
Helaku
An equally calculating look came from Helaku. "There's that 'my' again," he said, sincerely. "Whenever speaking of your own pack, it always 'our', even among Alphas. 'My' implies you own above others, which you do not. Is this speak what they teach young Ute these days?" As direct, authoritative and reprimanding Helaku sounded, there thrived an aged calm in everything he said. "Your duty's been done for you by young Wachiwa," he said. "A secondary conversation she and I had that cleared many misconceptions of my presence. She truthfully is the daughter of Honorable Ixkin and ever-kind Bodhi." He stood and approached Asku in a non-threatening manner, the subtle breeze pulling at his necksash just enough to reveal the Sun and Moon on his shoulder. "Has no one applied your Tobba? Ute wolves bear the symbol of the Sun, Tobba, in unity. When Alpha Skelaghe lived, she made sure each member knew of Tobba and its importance to the pack for it is legacy."
Asku
Askuwheteau does not stiffen or bristle as Helaku rises, it was Wachiwa's name that calmed him by a few degrees. "You know of Wachiwa, and her parents. That does add credence to your story. I am more willing to accept that you may...may be Ute. And the reason I call it /my/ pack and /my/ packlands is because I belong to it as much as it belongs to me, every pack member I view as an extention of myself and I am an extention of the pack. My brother may be the Alpha but the pack should speak with one voice. A wolf's strength is his pack, and Skelaghe has been dead a long time, she died before i opened my eyes for the first time, I very vaguely remember her scent but that is all. I never saw her face. Few wear the symbol anymore."
Helaku
Helaku's posture eased once he explained his use of 'my' as opposed to 'our'. "A very interesting definition of 'my'," he said. "New to Ute as far as I'm aware, but it fits very well." He pondered on that for a moment, looking off into the mist before his attention gently snapped back to Asku. "Few wear the symbol...that is unfortunate. The Tobba identified the Ute in the old days from other packs," he said. "Alpha Skelaghe, however, is part of what you might have heard about me speaking of this pack's troubles. She is the only Alpha of the last several pairs that didn't die a gruesome death." He slowly sat before Asku, casually measuring this young wolf. He was impressed. Once beyond the initial barrier of guardianship, he saw more of what he used to know. "Honorable Ixkin was a member of the Ancient Ute with Alpha Skelaghe and Alpha Helaku, originally Beta of the Ancient Ute--and my sire," he said. "There was another, Dakota, but this Ancient Ute member's fate is unknown. Alpha Skelaghe outlived Alpha Helaku along with her own daughter, Aquene...my half-sister. I can only assume her other son, Abel, is either departed or missing and Rowtag either dead or roaming." This was a lot of information to put before Asku, but Helaku wasn't keen on having anyone doubt he'd been here before. "During Alpha Skelaghe's final days, she promoted Beta Wyanet and Beta Haht to Alpha, of these two their fate taken by a bear--an interesting coincidence as I once saved Rowtag from a bear near the territory. I ponder if it is the same bear."
Asku
Askuwheteau arches one eyebrow at the strange wolf, "Some of those names I don't recognize, but some I do. Rowtag was to be my trainer when I was still a juvenile, but he was never around. If you are indeed one of us then I welcome you most sincerely, the Ute have fallen on hard times and we need all the strength and experience we can muster. I try my best to support my brother Skahla and help to lift his burden as Alpha as much as I am able. But I am the same age as he and while I am more thoughtful...some say scheming...I do not have the experience to be a great help to him or Shawnee. I do what I can but every wolf who wishes to help the Ute is welcome, especially if they bring with them knowledge of our lost traditions. Perhaps I will ask you to do me the honor of applying the Ute symbol to my shoulder if the rest of the pack has accepted you. I...am worried. I do not have a good feeling about the Pack's near future. I feel we are beset with enemies, and unfortunately most of them are unseen by the eyes of we Quidel, Hinto, Lupin, Kezhekoni, these are the most experienced members we have remaining to us. And we younger wolves have few chances to seek their advice unfortunately, perhaps you may be a blessing sent to us by the spirits to help guide us."
