Lone Crabapple Tree, Ute Lands
Scene:
Darkness has long set over the forest, but one little pup is not at all sleepy it would seem. Tala is sniffing along a path around the crabapply tree, her fuzzy tail flicking about as her ears twitch one way and then the other as if she was hot on the trail of something. She pauses among a few of the fallen crabapples that litter the ground thanks to the upcoming autumn and takes hold of one to chomp down onto it only to go about spitting it out at the rather sour taste that fills her maw. Doesn't seem to be what ever she was 'searching' for. Her head lowered and she rubs at her tounge a few times with a paw to try and get the taste out.
Ahiga is on the move! He's glad that finally he had the chance to head away from the densite for a while, even if it's just a little ways. And he's been hanging out at the crabapple tree for a little while now, even nibbling one of the apples. He kinda likes this sour tart taste...after having gotten used to it. But now he's grown a little bored, but..ha! Here comes Tala. He grins as he hides the best he can in the tall grass, his ears slicked back, turquoise eyes narrow, and a grin on his face. He creeps forward, then pauses. Then creeps. Then pauses. Ha! She's stopped. He wiggles his bottom, holding back a snicker as she licks the ground. What a silly girl, eating dirt! 1...2...3...POOUNCE! "Grrrowl!" he leaps out towards her, aiming to pounce on her.
Seems at the moment the wind is in Ahiga's favor as Tala has NO clue that he is even around at the moment. Once she has gotten the sour taste of the crabapple mostly out of her maw she is back to sniffing at the ground trying to find that little fuzzy mouse looking thing that has to go with the scent that she picked up on. She blinks a moment before her dear friend goes to pounce her and swings about to face him only to end up getting pounced and smooshed into the ground. A half yip escaping her and she wiggles around trying to get back up on her paws. "Hey!"
"Ha-ha!" cries Ahiga in triumph as he presses his front paws against Tala's shoulder and sie, trying to keep her down for a moment. "I knew it. I'm the best pouncer in the pack. I'm the /sneakiest/ ever!" Mwuahaha! Tail wagging, he punctuates his little speech with a nip to her ear before he lets her up, scooting off of her. He shakes off and then lifts his head in a prideful manner. "Where've ya been, huh? You missed th'story of...uh...The Rabbit an' the wolf. Or..mabe it was jus' a Rabbit..." He scrunches his nose a little. "I dunno. Wachiwa tells a lot've stories."
Tala huffs out as she wiggles and struggles about before the other finally calmbers off. She tibbits out at him while giving herself a shake. "Don't let it go to your head.. I'm totally better!" She offers out in normal childish fashion. Her ears perk and she ponders the story that Wachiwa has told now. "I was sleeping.. An she does tell lots of stories but der really good ones. Her and Asku."
"You wish," Ahiga retorts as he struts towards a crabapple ot swat at it. "What were ya lickin' the dirt for, huh? You hungry?" he asks, glancing back at her with a quirked brow. "Cuz... if ya /are/, there's better stuff ta eat than dirt." He makes a face before batting the apple towards her. "Like these. They kinda ... suck at first, an' they make ya do this.." He squints his eyes and shuts his muzzle tightly, overall making a 'omg sour!' face. "But then ya get used ta it." He smirks a little as he thumps his rear end onto the ground to sit. "Yeah...the stories are good...I guess."
Tala huffs out at this and sits back upon her haunches, her tail bounces about a few times before she stops the rolling crabapple that comes towards her. "I tryed to eat one of 'em and der all yuck tasting." She peers at him, a quizzled look upon her face. "You like 'em?" THis meaning the crabapples, and she sends the one she has hold of rolling back towards him with a bat of her paw. "Why you say 'you guess', you don't like the stories?"
Oh, a game! The Roll the Crabapple game! Ahiga's ears perk as the apple is sent back his way, and he stops it with his paw, his claws digging into the skin. "Yup, I like'm," he says, a bit proudly, as if this somehow makes him more ... manly? Er...wolfly? "Uh..." he thinks her question over, hitting the paple back to her in a bouncy roll. "I...sort've like them, but then I sort've..don't get them. I mean, my Ma never really told me stories. She talked about the great spirits some, but never about the first Rabbit or other things. I mean like..why do we need to know why we eat rabbits?" he says, snickering. "Or why they hide in holes? Or why the sun comes up 'n goes down? That's not stuff /I/ wanna learn."
Tala smirks at the answer and gives her head a shake while her tail curls about to her side. She watches the apply bounce and roll and catches it with her left paw and holds onto it for the moment. "Well.. I suppose dat'st rue." For a moment she is pondering the answer before sending the apply rolling back towards him. "Why don't we ask Chewy and Asku then? I bet der is a good reason why they haven't told us that stuffs yet." Her bright gaze rests on the other. "Did yer ma ever tell you want to get the rabbits then?"
Ahiga crouches a little as the apple is sent back, hopping a little to softly pounce it. "I betcha they'll just answer with another story," he says with a mischievous grin. "I mean, I really like'm. They're my favorite ones here. But I wish they'd stop treatin' us like new pups. I wish they'd...let us watch'm hunt or somethin'!" he says, eyes suddenly going wide with inspiration. "That'd be /awesome/ don'tcha think?" He uses his muzzle to send the apple back rolling, wacking it with his nose, which causes him to sneeze. Achoo! He sniffles once. "My ma told me a lotta stuff about what to do if I saw other wolves. What ta do if I ever got lost. What was good ta eat 'n what was bad. But I always wanted ta try to hunt a rabbit."
Tala hums softly while listening to what Ahiga has to say on that. "Well.. You do have a point there.." The pups have done ALOT of growing up in a short amount of time after all. Both in phyical and mentaly with everything that has happened to them all after all. She wiggles about on her haunches and 'grabs' hold of the rolling crabapple with both forepaws. "How bout we ask them about taking us on a hunt den?.." A ear twitches and she peers back at her friend. "Wat did yer ma tell you to do when you saw other wolves?"
Yeah, that's the ticket! The power of pups is difficult for adults to overcome, and if they form a united front, Ahiga is sure there's no way they'd deny them a front row view of a hunt! Especially since 1. Askuwheteau is the big brother of Ikuna and Tala, and so he /has/ to say yes to them, and 2. Ahiga's picked up the vibe that Wachiwa has chosen Ikuna as her favorite, and so she /has/ to say yes if they can sway him to join their taskforce! And what does he himself have to offer? Well..he's the oldest, so maybe he can convince them with his superior...uh...intellect and maturity. -.-; "I bet we could hunt a rabbit. We're bigger'n them anyway." He flops onto his belly, crouching low. "She tol' me to do this. An' the make sure my head was low 'n my tail too. An' she said to be reeeeeal nice an' good, an' if they were angry, I gotta make this noise." He whines a little, as an example.
Tala licks across her maw and hums at the thought of trying to get the adults into taking them out on a hunt.. Well why not? Its either that or they themselves will have to find soemthing to hunt down!.. "A rabbit? I don't see why not.. I mean.. der all fluffy and stuffs.." Sure that makes TOTAL sense! Her ears perk as she watches her friend, a soft ooooh escaping her. "Well.. dat makes sense." She lets her tail sway around a few times before batting the crabapple back towards Ahiga. "An you found us so it worked out, ya?"
Crabapples, in addition to tasting sour, roll if you nose at them. Ikuna has been discovering - nay, reveling! - in this fact, shoving one along and then chasing after it. This produces a rather meandering course, what with all the slopes and obstacles, and one that eventually brings him around into view of his sister and Ahiga. He grins, and wuffs a greeting! Games are even better shared... and it looks like they already know how to play! He gives his crabapple a hard knock to get it started, and then bounds toward them. "Hihi!"
"Yeah. My ma told me to come to the big hill if she came back late. So...I came," says Ahiga simply as he sits up again. "But /everybody/ tol' me I didn't have to do that stuff, 'cept Skahla, so I dunno /why/ she made me." He rolls his shoulders helplessly. Adults are difficult nuts to crack! The apple that's rolled back is snapped up in his mouth, and he grins cheesily at her, an the apple pressed between his fangs. "'id yur 'aa kell oo a oo 'at skuff oo?" he asks, his words indistinguishable thanks ot that apple in his mouth. And speaking of apples, here comes another one! He bounces back a step as another rolly ball is put in play, and his tail wags upon spotting the other boy. "Oo'a!"
Tala smiles and nods while her tail thumping against the ground a few times and she tilts her head while eyeing the look Ahiga gives her. With an amused smirk she sends another crabapply rolling towards Ahiga. "Take the apple out and say that again.. I couldn' understand you." Her ears perk and she looks towards her brother and smiles before bouncing over to greet him. "Hey!"
Ikuna giggles at the mumbly words from Ahiga, and then nuzzles his sister affectionately when she comes close. "This place is fun!" he says with a big grin. "Way better'n the den." He plants his paw on the apple he's been rolling around, holding onto it for the moment.
.. oh yeah, the apple. Ahiga shakes his head, spitting out the fruit and licking his muzzle afterwards. Sour! "I said, did your Ma tell you ta do that stuff too?" he asks, seemingly genuinely curious. He's never met anyone else's mother before. Tail wagging, he trots towards Ikuna, properly greeting him with a headbutt. "Yup, I'm with you. I like this place a lot more'n the den place. An' I wonder what /other/ places there are here! Oh yeah," he glances left and right, dropping his voice. "Me 'n Tala are gonna ask Asku and Wachiwa if we can go on a hunt with'm. You wanna come?"
Tala grins and nods while nuzzling her brother back, her tail swaying about. She is glad to see her little fuzzy brother! "Ya it is.. Much better then the den for sure!" A ear twitches and she glances back to Ahiga. "Naw.. I mean.. I guess it was different cause the pack was our family already and stuff.." Sorta makes sense to her anyway. She licks across her maw while glancing to the left and then to the right after Ahiga does wondering what he is looking for, someone else to come pouncing out at them perhaps? A faint oh escapes her and she ndos eagerly before glancing to Ikuna. "He'll come.. Won't cha?"
Ikuna isn't sure his mama even knew HOW to bow and scrape like that. Though, after one of her famous lectures, there were plenty of other wolves demonstrating it in the hopes of averting her temper. He nudges back at Ahiga - it's a much more manly sort of greeting than licking. Or, at least, boyish one. At the proposal, his ears perk up, and he grins. An adventure? With Ahiga and Tala... and Asku and Chewy too? What's not to love? "Yeah!" he replies enthusiastically, before lowering his voice to the more secretive volume. "Of course I'll come!" he tells his sister, and grins a happy grin for her and bigpup.
Woo! "Awesome! I knew you'd wanna come," replies Ahiga, beaming towards Ikuna. It's so much easier when they're all on the same page and agree on things. And really...Ahiga can't think of a time when their little pup team has been divided! "Good. Cuz we're gonna hunt down our first rabbit. I told Tala how we heard the Rabbit story from Wachiwa, an' we figure...we can handle a rabbit. Then, we won't be baby pups anymore. The others will see that we can do a lot more stuff than they're lettin' us."
Tala grins at her brother and bounces on her paws a few times before leaning against his side and settles down to her haunches once more. A quick nod is seen while she glances back to Ahiga. "Ya.. that's true." Though after a moment she pauses. "But.. Where could we ever find a rabbit at anyway?" Its not like any of them have actually seen where a rabbit lives.. right?
All for one, and one for all! It's the Three Pupketeers! Ikuna grins, and nods. "Yeah. Rabbits are easy." Big words for a small pup. The fiercest prey of this group so far has been... sticks. And the occasional flower. "B'sides... rabbits just run an' hide. Nobody'd get hurt." Well, except the rabbit if they succeed, but that part's on purpose. "It'd be /safe/." Not that he cares much about that, but he knows the bigwolves worry about their safety. Especially Chewy, and Ikuna'd feel just /terrible/ if he made her unhappy. At Tala's question, he hmmms. "Rabbits... live in holes, right?" He looks to Ahiga for confirmation. That story said so, right?
"PFt, right. Rabbit are stupid an' scaredys." Not that Ahiga knows this first hand...he's never experienced anything but dead rabbit yummy meat, but from the way the adults speak of them, they sure do /seem/ like stupid scaredys! At the question of where to find them, he momentarily looks stumped before Ikuna chimes in, causing his ears to perk. "Oh, yeah. Holes. So all we gotta do is find a hole 'n ...dig'm out or somethin'. Or wait til they come home. Easy." He smoothes his ears back cooly against his head, nodding. "Ooor...I know! We can make a trap. We could like, dig a hole for a rabbit 'n that way we won't have to go lookin' for it."
Tala has never met a live rabbit so has no clue how they even act! She hums faintly while peering at one boy and then the other. "Dig a hole.. Would it be that easy to catch them?" She huffs out softly and glances over the ground. "Well if they live in holes we could try.. Maybe throw a few of des things in the hole? I mean maybe they like this stuff." She bats one of the little orangered apples around with a forepaw a few time.
So trivial. Really, it's a surprise they haven't caught one by accident yet! "Yeah!" agrees Ikuna. "We gotta find a hole, an' then there's a rabbit." Or a badger, or a fox, or a wolverine, or any number of other things. Including other wolves, so Ikuna should know perfectly well that not all holes mean rabbit. But it's easy to get swept away with enthusiasm when you're a puppy. At Ahiga's clever scheme, he oohs. "I 'member... I saw Chewy diggin', one morning. And then we had rabbit!" ...okay, yes, the reason there was rabbit was because she buried it there earlier, but Ikuna was asleep for that part. Digging means bunny!
Ah, three brains are definitely better than one. What this trap needs is definitely some bait, and...tada! Tala suggests apples. What rabbit in his right mind wouldn't want an apple treat? Heh, nevermind the overwhelming smell of wolf that would be lingering about the hole and the bait, but yeah, that's not something
Ahiga's thinking about right now. "Yeah! All we gotta do is dig a hole, an' that's easy. We could get like...three rabbits an' we'll be the best hunters in the whole pack." GLORY! Fame and GLORY! He inhales a breath that swells his chest a little, basking in the praise that hasn't even come yet. "Let's do it, guys." This is going to work. Besides, Ikuna said Wachiwa did it successfully, but he's sure she wasn't so genius as to think of adding apples to the pit!
Tala grins and nods while she shifts up onto her paws and gives herself a shake. "Alright!" This said while she starts rolling some of the apples into a pile that are near her. "Where we going to dig the hole so no one else can find it and get the rabbit before we do?" They have to get the rabbit first after all, or the others could take all the credit after all!
Apples in a hole that smells of wolf are clearly something more desirable to a rabbit than the ones sitting out in the open. Obviously. Because, uhm... obviously. "So, we gotta dig a good hole. Big 'nough for a rabbit." He hmms, and looks around for a good spot to dig. Not someplace where the ground is hard, or with too many rocks. Ikuna may not know hunting, but he does know a bit about digging holes. A nice soft loamy patch would be good... ooh, but Tala's got a good point there. "You're right. We can't let anyone else know. Not even Asku or Chewy." Not that they'd steal it, but... this is the pups' project. It's not for bigwolf meddling-in. They gotta prove themselves!

(...possibly, to be continued...)
