An Unknown Location, far from home.
Ikuna - male juvenile wolf
Kachina - female juvenile cougar
---
Ikuna tumbles into the den, framed in a patch of light from where the logs have been pulled away. Slowly, that light goes away as the creatures outside replace them, leaving the den in a gloom only lit by the faint bits of sunlight that filter in through the barrier. Ikuna is trapped, now. He lets out a soft whine for a moment, and then picks himself up. He's a bigpup now. He's had to be, ever since mom and dad died. So, even if he's been caught by mean animals and clawed at and had his leg twisted a bit, he's going to be big and strong and take care of things. The first thing to be taken care of, clearly, is figuring out where he is and what's happening. He looks back to the entrance, beyond which are the cat and wolverine and eagle, and decides that being big and not-scared is all well and good, but... he'll explore the rest of this den first.
Kachina ears perk as she peers out from the other side of the den, for a few moments she is very quiet, especially as she sees the pup some distance away and the logs getting pushed back into the front. She shifts up onto her paws eyeing the pup, ears lowering and she sniffs out. Already she could tell this is not the same pup she has been with for these past days. "Who are you.. Where is Anoki?.." She looks rather confused even if it is rather dark within the den.
Ikuna blinks a few times, helping his eyes adjust to the dark. There's someone else in here. She smells kind of funny, though... not like anyone he's ever met before. He pads a few steps closer, trying for a better look. "Anoki?" he says, repeating the unfamiliar name. Is that the other wolf? Ikuna can smell the scent of him all over in here... it must be. Ikuna grins, despite his own dire circumstances. "He th' wolf? He ran away!"
Kachina licks across her maw and shifts on her paws moving a bit closer towards where this new wolf is. "He left?.." She frowns and peers at the entrance before sitting down upon her haunches, tail swaying about. "Who are you.. Did the big bird get you too?"
Ikuna nods. "Uh-huh. He ran away. I bet he's gonna go get help! Chewy, an' Asku, an'..." Hold on a minute. He'd never seen that pup before, so how is he going to know where to find Ikuna's pack? "Or... or his family..." Whoever that is. And wherever! The bird brought him an awful long way... was that other wolfpup from just as far? "Well... he's gonna help us, anyway." Ikuna's a lot less confident now, but he's still sorta hopeful. Stupid mean bird. "Yeah. I'm Ikuna."
Kachina seems rather unsure about this to say the least and she eyes the pup before taking in a breath an soon flops down to the ground. "Maybe.. I hope he will.. I hope he remembers to come back for us at least." She isn't that sure what to say about it, worried that she'll never get out of the den does cross her mind, and even more so that she will never see her mother and brother again at this rate. Her steel colored gaze drift towards the pup once more. "I'm Kachina."
Of course Anoki will come back for them... right? With an avenging army with Asku and Chewy in the lead! ... right? Bad things don't just happen for no reason... oh wait. They do. They happened to Ikuna's mom and dad, and if they can happen to /parents/, they can happen to anyone. Ikuna sighs. What's he gonna do? He looks over Kachina, as she introduces herself. She's not even a wolf! But... does it really matter? She's stuck here, same as him. And being a bigwolf means taking care of things. Even if they're funny-looking cats. So he takes a step closer, and leans his head down to offer a gentle nuzzle for her. "We're gonna be okay."
Kachina chews on her lip a few times while she glances over to Ikuna once more. "I don't know if we're be okay anymore.. I've been here for so long and now Anoki is gone.." She looks rather confused at the nuzzle, which is something she isn't that use to. Though after a moment she soon relaxes and nods slowly. "I hope you're right.."
"They're gonna be mad at Anoki. Not us!" says Ikuna. Though, actually, they're probably going to be pretty mad at him, too. After all, he fought and made a distraction to help the other wolfpup get away. But it was the right thing to do! "Anoki's okay. The big shaggy thing chased him, an' bit at him, but he got away, an' even the big bird couldn' find him. " He settles down next to Kachina; he's an affectionate pup, after all. Besides, comforting someone is a bigwolf thing to do - and he badly wants that comfort for himself as well. "An' he'll get someone to help us." People, to Ikuna's mind, are fundamentally good. Of course somebody's going to help.
Kachina seems rather unsure about them only being mad at Anoki, after all how many times did she herself think about running away? Her ears flick down and stay folded back while she eyes the opening, wishing it wasn't covered with the logs so she could run away as well. "Maybe.. I suppose we're have to wait and see what happens now.. At least the bird didn't get Anoki, I hopf he finds his sister." A slight glance is offered over to Ikuna. "Did you come from his pack?"
So much waiting. At the question about his pack, Ikuna shakes his head. "Nuh-uh. I'm from Ute... I got a sister, though!" He says it proudly, but a moment later, his ears droop a little. "I hope she's okay..." he murmurs softly. After all, now he's not going to be there to protect her!
"Waz a Ute?" Kachina questions, she's never herd of these groups before, well she never saw a wolf before Anoki either. "I've never herd of 'em.." A soft oh escapes her and she nods slightly. "I have a brother.." There is a pause and she shrugs a moment. "I bet his forgotten all about me though.." Being kidnapped has put a damper on the young feline's mood, she was dealing with the loss of her father and uncle, and now being away from her family for so long she is a rather negative little thing.
"Ute is my pack," says Ikuna. "A pack is like... a big family. I don't got a mom or a dad anymore, but it's okay, because I still got my pack. We're all friends an' we all help each other." He considers for a moment, looking at Kachina's expression - then leans over, and offers a lick to the mopey kitten's cheek. "Wanna be in a pack with me?"
Kachina listens to the other, finding what he says to be interesting it would seem. "Well.. I dono what a pack is for.. My family is just my mother and brother really. My father is gone too." There is a pause and she peers over at the other. "Me.. in a pack?" She looks confused once more. "But I'm a cougar, not a wolf.." As for the lick she makes a slight face, dog breath ewwwww.
"But you got a brother, an' I got a sister," points out Ikuna. "So we match up!" Puppy logic. Is there anything it can't do? "My friend Ahiga didn't used to be in my pack, but now he is. S'ahla said so." Oops, better explain what that means. "S'ahla's the Alpha of Ute, so he can say stuff about the pack. Alpha means bein' the biggest wolf. So, since I'm the biggest wolf here, that means I'm the Alpha, an' I can say you can be in a pack with me." He leans over, and noses again. "Packs are wolf things, so I get to say 'em. If it was a cougar thing, you'd get to say!" If only Ikuna knew, he's actually following in a tradition - just a few seasons ago, there was a young cougar living among Ute.
Kachina ahs a moment, none of this make ANY sense to her. "Why would wolves want to let a cougar join there pack?".. She hums softly, her tail twitching a few times while she lifts a paw to try and get him to stop nosing her. His rather clingy! "Well.. I guess that sorta makes sense." She peers at him. "So.. what happened with you being alpha when we get outa here?"
Clingy, yeah, that's one way to put it. Ikuna's a naturally cuddly sort, and with all bad stuff and fear... that aspect has come to the forefront. "Well... the Great Spirits made all of us. Everyone lived together, once... wolves, and cougars, and everyone. So it's just doin' that again, is all." He lets himself be pushed away by the paw, though, rolling over slightly onto his side. Really, he just wants a friend, because he's lonely and scared. Just having Kachina to talk to is a very good start. At her second question, he hmms. He hadn't thought of that yet, and he ponders for a moment before answering. "I'd still be alpha for as long as you wanted to be in a pack with me. But you wouldn't gotta stay if you didn't wanna."
Kachina tilts her head and eyes the pup, wondering what are these spirit things his talking about. "I've never heard anything about some great spirits.. But I have seen dead things before, walking around and talking. Do they do that?" Seems cougars and wolves are brought up very different. Her tail slowly twitches and curls to her side while she seems to relax somewhat. "Well.. I guess we're have to wait and see what happens.. Huh?" For a moment she is quiet before she leans over to bump her head against his side. "But.. I'm glad your alright and they didn't hurt you any. Hopfull Anoki will get help and we're be out soon."
Ikuna's eyes get wide at the mention of dead things. "I never seen a dead thing, but... my big brother Asku did! She was a scary ghost that hated boys. Mla... Mlawatu. Asku told us 'bout it. He's got lotsa stories about adventures. Chewy's the one that tells stories 'bout the Great Spirits, though. They're..." He pauses, trying to pull together the scattered bits of spirituality he's learned into some coherent explanation. "They made everything, and they watch over it. They're kinda like parents for the whooooole world. I think maybe they died, though, 'cause all the stories about them actually doin' stuff are really old. But I guess they're still watchin' from somewhere, just like my parents." He shifts a bit, getting comfy himself, and then nods. "Yeah. We gotta wait, for now." His tail thumps against the ground at the headbump, and he smiles. The spot where Pauwau clawed him still stings somewhat, but... yeah, he's alright. And he has a new friend. "I helped Anoki get away, an' so he's gonna help us get away.
Kachina ohs and nods slightly, her forepaws getting colded close to her chest. "Ya.. I have a little sparrow that lives at the tree me and my ma, and brother live in too. He said a hawk got him left spring but he can't 'leave' yet." A slight shrug of her shoulders is seen. "But.. Not everone see dead things moving bout and talking.. Anoki did though.. He talked about the wind and some spirts too I think." She peers back at him. "So they watch over everyone?.. That's sorta strange." A glance is sent towards the den entrance. "If they watch over everyone why can't they help us then?" Her ears lower. "My little bird friend won't come here, its so dark and scarey for him I think.." A nod is seen. "Hope he won't forget.."
"I never seen one..." says Ikuna. Dead stuff, to him, is something to be eaten for dinner - well, and scary stories. Can't forget those. But this sort of thing doesn't sound scary, it just sounds like... people. When Kachina brings up one of the hard philosophical questions - how can the Great Spirits allow evil to continue - the pup sighs. "That's how come I think they're dead. Maybe they're still around, like your birdy... but they can't do anything really. They gotta find someone who can see them, first..."
Kachina nods slightly, her tail twitching a few times. "Well.. Its not something you could easily forget if you did see one that's for sure." She licks across her maw and then peer back over at the pup. "I gues you have a point there.. I wonder what they look like.." This said with a soft curious tone. "I'm sure there is a cougar among 'em."
Ikuna considers on that for a moment. When he was listening to the stories about Great Spirits, he had always sort of assumed they were like wolves, only more so, but Kachina's got a good point. If they're the Great Spirits of everything, then they wouldn't just look like wolves, even if wolves _are_ their favorite creations. He hmms. Chewy would know the answer, but she's not here to ask. "Maybe... maybe they look like everythin' at once."
Kachina ears perk at the thought, a faint giggle escapes her. "They would look really funny if they did wouldn't they?" THis questioned as she peers over at the other. "Maybe they can look like any animal they want?"
Yeah, that would look pretty funny. "Like... a wolf, with a cougar tail an' rabbit legs an' deer-antlers!" he suggests, and laughs! "Yeah, nobody could ever take them serious if they looked like that. I bet you're right... but they prob'ly mostly look like wolves if they're talkin' to wolves, an' cougars if they're talkin' to cougars."
Kachina grins and nods a the thought. "Ya.. Or with a bee coloring.. black and yellow.. An bird wings." She giggles again at the thought. "Thta would make sense.. So the animal they speak with wouldn't be so scared maybe?"
Ikuna giggles! "Oooh." That's super extra silly. He nods his agreement. "Yeah. 'Specially if they wanna talk to a rabbit or somethin'. Wolves are brave, an' I bet so are cougars, so we're not scared. But other critters would be."
Kachina huffs out softly. "Of course cougars are brave!" She offers while wiggling to rest on her belly. "We have to hunt on our own when we're bigger.. No pack like you wolves. So we gotta be strong and brave."
Ikuna nods. "Cougars must be real brave, then. I'm glad you're here, 'cause... I'm not good at bein' brave alone," admits Ikuna, and he leans over to bump his head against Kachina's side, trying to copy the cougar gesture that she used earlier.
Kachina ohs a moment at this and peers over at the other, ponding this. "I bet your braver then you think." She offers trying to sound friendly. "So.. How did the bird get you?"
Ikuna never thinks of himself as brave - after all, he's been scared plenty, he just does what he thinks he should and tries to help others! That's not brave, that's just... something else. He smiles a little at the encouragement from Kachina, though, and nods. The mention of the bird makes him grr a little. "There was a bad wolf... I dunno who she is. But she said my sister was in trouble! An' she knew my name, so I thought it was okay to go with her. But it wasn't." He scowls. "She led me away, an' the bird was there an' grabbed me."
Kachina is quiet for a moment and ods, a slight frown seen. "I'm sorry.." She offers with a soft tone hearing this. For a few moments she's quiet, her gaze resting on a front paw. "My father died.. I guess.. An the brid found me when I went out of the tree without my mother." She knows now that she should have listened to her mother better. A soft sigh escapes her. "Guess if I ever get out of here.. and find my mom I won't ever go against her words again."
Aww. Kachina doesn't have a dad anymore either. Ikuna leans over to nuzzle her side gently. "Mamas know an awful lot," he agrees. "If mine was still here, she'd prob'ly march right up an' snarl at the bird until it ran away, then drag me home an' make me go to bed without dinner." He smiles wistfully.
Kachina nods slightly. "Ya they do.." She says softly, half batting a little stone around fwith her forepaw. She glances back to Ikuna at the nuzzle, a faint smile seen. "I know mine would too.." There's a pause and she ohs softly. "You hungry?" This questioned while she stands up and moves over to a small pile of dirt and starts digging it away from a whole. "There's some fish left.. We was trying to save some food incase they don't fed us."
Ikuna's ears perk at the mention of food. The last thing he ate was half a crabapple, which was really more about proving his toughness and that he could so do it than having food. "That's a smart idea..." he says as he bounds up and pads over to help with the digging. It's like trapping rabbit, only... with fish. Hey, waaaaait a minute. Was /that/ why Chewy produced rabbit from a hole? Maybe it wasn't a trap at all! Gasp!

Gasp!
