Rock-Strewn Soil
Kachina - Female Juvenile Cougar
Wiraqu - Male Cougar
---
The weather has gotten colder that Kachina can recall, she's never seen fall, or winter for that much before. Her ears perk frward as she slowly follows along after the wolves, her bright gaze taking in the area which she has never been to before in her short life. Snow has fallen through the area, a rather light dusting but still its snow and at times the young feline finds herself amused by it while she kicks it about with her forepaws now and then. Seems the wolves have finally stopped for the evening choosing to let the everyone get a good nights rest before moving onwards..
Wiraqu's wandering paws are bringing him back to this region once more. The tawny male has caught the scent of wolves in the area, and so he slips quietly from tree to boulder to tree, keeping himself hidden as he follows their trail to investigate. But what does he find? Not wolves, though their smell is everywhere. A young cougar, apparently alone. Fascinating. The adult steps out from hiding and pads closer on quiet paws.
Kachina has settled herself down and is in the middle of chewing upon a stick it would seem, bordem and her grumbling stomach has caused her to try and find something to take care of both with it would seem. Still she's not that far from the wolves as that would be a rather stupid thing with everything she's been through.
Ah, there are those wolves he was smelling. Still, they're far more interested in each other than in the juvenile cougar, and none of them notice Wiraqu as he approaches. What's really got Wiraqu perplexed is the complete lack of a cougar-mama. There's not even the scent of one. And Kachina is a bit young to be entirely on her own. Why, she doesn't even look like she's seen a full winter yet. He pauses a short distance away - enough space to give him a head start if Angry Cougaress appears - and says, "Hello, kitten."
Kachina blinks slowly at the voice and lifts her head, her bright gaze peering over towards the movement and she tilts her head looking somewhat confused it seems. She didn't expect to see a cougar around here that's for sure. "Who are you?" Is questioned with a quick tone while she shifts upwards so she is sitting.
Wiraqu holds his distance, and a non-threatening pose. He's just curious, it seems. "I am Wiraqu," he answers. His eyes go over the young cat - the signs of hunger, the faint nervousness, the proximity to wolves... his nose twitches, trying to catch her scent clearly.
Kachina shifts on her paws and pushes herself closer towards there Ikuna and the others are, her tail lashing a few times in normal nervous feline fashion. "What you doing here..?"
Wiraqu chuckles, and he stretches out his forepaws, lying down to be closer to the young cat's level. "I? I am a wanderer. Blame my paws for taking me here. Or blame the wind for bringing odd scents." He tilts his head to the side. "Such odd scents. Like a cougar kitten, traveling with wolves."
Kachina does indeed smell like the wolves, an of dirt and grim from being in that old den so long. She's thinner then she should be for the time of the year, and if she makes it through the winter it will be a surprize.. Especially if she stays in the shape she is in at the moment. Her ears lower while she eyes the older cougar. "There my friends.. They.. saved me." Well, she knows Ikuna is her friend at least.
Wiraqu nods his head, looking at Kachina consideringly. He glances over to the wolves, and then back to the young cougar. He ponders another moment, with a look like he's trying to remember something, and then smiles slightly. "Would those wolves be Ute, by any chance?" It seems a longshot, but hey. Nothing wrong with crazy questions.
Kachina blinks and her ears perk forward slightly at the question from the other. "Well.. yes.." There is a pause. "How did you know that?"
What, really? Wiraqu laughs! "Creatures of habit, it seems!" he says, and grins broadly before giving a better answer. "I met a young cougar, once. This was... oh, two years ago, easily. Long before you were born. He spoke well of Ute. He said... they had raised him, after his mother was lost. Odd, for wolves. It stuck in my mind."
Kachina blinks at this while she watches the other, her maw twitching as she ponders this. "What.. was the cougar's name?" She curious to say the least on a cougar that was actually raised by wolves, and by the Ute at that.
Wiraqu ponders for a moment on that. It was years ago, after all, and he didn't know the fellow all that well. Hmm. What was it? Oh, yes. "His name was Toyo, I believe," he says.
Kachina ponders the name a few moments as she shifts to slowly settle back upon her stomach, forepaws pulled close to her. "I see.." Is soon offered with a soft tone.
Such an odd coincidence, and odder wolves. Wiraqu is amused. After a few moments, he speaks again. "Toyo returned to the mountain, though. To the tribe there. I don't know what happened to him after that." The male shrugs, then perks up curiously. "So what's your story? Did you lose your mother? Seems like, wolves saving you or no, you could still use a good meal or three."
Kachina peers at the other at the talk of a 'tribe'. "What.. tribe?" She questions with a unsure tone. There is a pause as she glances towards the wolves and then back to the older feline. "They saved me from a group of animals that took me.. The group also took Ikuna.. one of there pups an the wolves found us and freeded us."
"The cougars on the mountaintop," replies Wiraqu. "Amaranth, they call themselves. Far too serious, if you ask me, but decent sorts." He considers on her answer, then nods. "Ah, so you're the kidnapped cub. I heard something of the sort from one of the wolves, a while ago. So they never did find your mother?"
Kachina licks across her maw slightly, her nose twitching. "I didn't know there was more cougars.. Anywhere.." She says with a soft tone at the thought while she glances one way and then another as if looking for said mountaintop. Her ears perk and she looks back to Wiraqu and tilts her head. "No.. I mean.. I didn't know anyone was looking for my mother.."
"There are indeed," Wiraqu says with a soft chuckle. "We're loners, not like the wolves with their packs, but there are cougars around, have no doubt of that." He grins, and stretches himself out a little. "I'm not the best situated to make introductions, I'm afraid," he says, then pauses a moment, and gets a considering look. "Not at the moment, anyhow. Perhaps your mother is with Amaranth, though? I doubt the wolves went that far to ask. The one I met seemed a bit confused about how to look."
Kachina ahs softly and frowns a moment at the thought. "I.. I don't know.. I guess she could be there, an my brother too." Her tail twitches slowly while she looks towards the wolves and then back towards the other. "Do you know how to get to the mountains, where the other cougars are?" Perhaps she could check and if her mother and brother isn't there the pack would let her go back to them.. Or maybe they would either way.
Oh, sure, he knows the way. Being welcomed there, well... that's another story entirely. "I might know a way or t- wait. Brother?" Wiraqu starts up a little, leaning toward Kachina to try and catch her scent, to compare it to two others he smelled recently, but only from a distance. It... is rather reminiscent of them. Related-seeming. Not to mention of a third, which he hasn't noted in years, but of whom he's been recently reminded.
Kachina ears perk and she eyes the other slightly. "Well.. Yes.. My mom and my brother was left at the tree we lived at.." Her maw twitches. "My brother's name is Chaska.." She tilts her head while eyeing the other a moment. "Why?.."
Wiraqu rises to his feet with a luxuriant stretch. "I think, kitten, that visiting the mountain would be a very good idea for you. I can't take you myself at the moment, but I will speak to someone I know, and we will arrange it. In the meantime... I will hunt a rabbit for you. The wolves may be kind, but they will think of their own first." He lowers his head, grinning, then turns and bounds off toward the trees.
Kachina looks rather confused as she watches the other, her ears perking forward and she snuffles out. "Why.. Why do you think that?" Though as he talks about food her stomach grumbles and whines and she swallows slightly. For a few moments she is quiet before taking in a breath. "Alright.. An.. Thank you.." This said before he goes running off to the trees.
