Drip. Drip. Drip. The snow is melting. It's dripping down off the branches and turning to a slush on the ground. Everything is wet, and that includes Niyt as she makes her way among the reeds. Her fur is splattered with the big drips of snowmelt, darker grey against the rest of her pelt. She pauses to shake herself, but it hardly does any good; within the next few steps, a half-dozen drops and clumps of slushy snow splat against her.
Coinin will be happier when the mess is gone as well, but for now one must simply grin and bear it, or at least stoically ignore it. He is presently seated in his usual spot, but isn't up to much other than just surveying the area with both sight and smell. His tail gives a wag when he notes the presence of Niyt, "Hi Niyt." he calls out to her. Things seem to have calmed down guest wise in the pack, no new wolves for days. Which is definitely something that pleases him. He doesn't want the pack to get so large that he can't keep track of everyone.
Winter is a time when wolves gather together. It's the natural time for visitors and guest. Spring, on the other hand... well, spring is the time for new puppies, but not this year. Perhaps next spring; that may not be too much to hope for, if the signs are what they seem. Niyt lifts her head at Coinin's greeting. "Hello," she calls back to him.
She'd been out of the lands for a few days, wandering paws an all that, exploring more of the surrounding woodlands and mountain side. Her worry of her niece had lessened, mostly due to her trust in the pack slowly taking stronger root. However not seeing her neices face for a few moons does in fact make her uneasy. She makes her way delicatly through the slush, attempting not to be even more coated then she already is. Rayen's ears perk to the sounds of voices which she alternates her path to take her closer to.
The winter was too short. The ice is gone, and Anoki can't walk on the river anymore! Disappointment! Sorrow! EMO WOLF! .. Well, okay, except that now, close to coming up on his second spring, Anoki is getting large enough that he can ford the shallower runs of water without too much trouble. Which he seems to be making a game of at the moment, prance prance prance to one side, then splash splash bounce splash to the other, occasionally stopping to look ahead down the river's flow to where the water deepens, and fish fry occasionally dart about among the shadows where the ice is still present at the edges of the riverbed. He knows Niyt is there; he can feel her presence as surely as he can see the shadows of the fish who became river when the chold froze their hearts. But he's not going to bother her specifically. Slowly, over the lessening winter, growing spring, he's started becoming less clingy of his older sister.
Coinin doesn't really move from his spot but offers her a smile, even though she can't see it, before he turns his attention toward Anoki. Now there is a wolf that he hasn't seen much off. He had hoped that he would be able to take him out hunting or something like that. After all Niyt is a great mother and big sister, but a young wolf also needs some male figures in his life, "Hey Anoki." he says.
Sometimes, knowing is enough. Niyt has never minded her brother's clinging, glad for his presence once more, but she's also been glad to see him exploring and learning how to stand on his own four paws again, even though it takes him away from her. A pack is made of many wolves, and they spread apart before gathering together again. No matter if she is alone for the moment, she still has her brother, and her pack. Sometimes it's a little lonely, but she can still feel the faint warmth of presence, and she knows. It's enough. She pads a few steps further, to a high spot that the slush has drifted down from, and then sits down, curling her tail around her legs.
As she draws closer the three wolves come into view. She recognizes Niyt, though she hadn't had a chance to have a conversation with the female, and then Coinin as well as an unknown younger male. Rayens tail sways from side to side with each step as she draws closer, "Hello there," she calls out. Her furs given a good shake as she nears the others, a gentle smile on her features.
Splash splash spla-- huh? Anoki, high-stepping fox trot mid water, stops to look towards Coinin, and he gives a snuff of noise. "H'lo," but it's Rayen who really catches his attention. Whoa. Another girl? Man, where did all these girls come from? His tail gives a halfhearted wag, before the near-adolescent looks back to the water, and begins to shift his weight from paw to paw again, finishing his cross to the other side, and then giving his fur a rough shake. He looks to the water again, and starts to hum softly to himself. Coinin, Niyt both would know the tune; it seems to be one he's taken upon himself to memorize; it's the voice of the water itself.
Coinin notes the arrival of Rayen with a smile and a nod of his head in her direction. He hasn't seen her in some time and is pleased that she is still hanging about. He hasn't seen her niece in some time either and he had wondered if they had moved on. It would appear that they haven't. His ears perk as he hears Anoki sing his tune, yes, he is most definitely familiar with it, "You know Anoki...I was thinking that perhaps we should go out hunting sometime." He watches him hopefully. He had sort of waited to see if anyone of the other males in the pack was going to take an interest in training the boy and if there has been someone he hasn't noticed it, so why not him?
Niyt perks her ears at the sound of Rayen's voice. Another girl, indeed! "Hello," she replies with a smile. "How have you been?" Though her tone is casual and friendly, one might notice that her ears stay perked. For whatever reason, she's paying attention to this - though she's not so intent that she doesn't at least notice the song Anoki sings, one ear swiveling for a moment and her smile becoming fond as she hears him calling the river to itself. That ear turns again as she hears the offer Coinin makes, but she is silent on that front, letting her brother answer for himself.
She gives Coinin a gentle smile before she closes the distance and settles herself comfortabley down on her haunches. Yellow-green eyes flicker to Anoki curiously once Coinin questions the younger male. Rayen listens for a moment before turning her attention to Niyt, "I know we haven't actually met, my names Rayen.. you are Niyt? Right?" She's seen her on more then one occasion and feels rude for not having done this before.
".. Hunt? I .. Suppose that'd be okay, sure. I've been kinda fiddling around chasin' rabbits, and fish and lizards, but I guess huntin' won't be too bad if I got someone good to teach me," he says, softly, considering this aspect. Anoki's not that sure, really, about killing things. Food is one thing, but death.. Is still kind of scary. "As long as we thank the animal when it's dead.. and do anything it asks us to to make it's spirit happy." He says, solumnly, to Coinin, in thought, seating himself. Kid's a funny one, maybe? Something wrong in the head? Who knows. He looks ober to Rayen again, and watches, ears cupped forward.
Coinin doesn't really think that there is anything wrong with Anoki. He knows the kid has been through just an aweful experience and he can't blame him for being a bit sqwemish. He rises to his paws and walks a bit closer to Anoki, "Well I wouldn't say that I'm good, but I'm decent enough.." he notes as he takes a seat a few feet away from the young one, "...and I promise you that anything we hunt won't suffer ok?" He takes the kids beliefs seriously, just as he would want someone to take his own seriously. For the time being Coinin will let the ladies get to know each other, his attention focused solely on Anoki.
Niyt nods to Rayen. "That's right," she says. She's heard the other wolf introduced to her uncle, but it wasn't exactly a time for socialization between the two of them. Her attention is drawn back to her brother and Coinin's conversation - funny, how the ears seem to pick out those sorts of sounds better than all the others. She turns her head back toward them for a moment. "Look for the ones who do suffer. Give them peace, and their spirits will be glad to let you."
Ears twitch, and Anoki nods, "The ones who suffer, bring them peace. Then that's the way to go." He says, solumnly, in thought, looking to Coinin with a weak smile. "And when we've given them peace we should thank the spirit for the hunt, because it's proper. Wouldn't you want to be thanked for giving yourself to someone if you were food?" He smiles, tail wagging slightly.
Anoki is just.. Anoki. He then considers, and murmurs, "So you're going to stay then, Coinin? with the pack? That's good. You and Niyt should have puppies so it's not just me and Krisha around here, then Uncle Tariro won't be lonely, he'll have someone to chew on him still."
Coinin sees no difficulty in thanking the creature that has given its life, "I'm sure we can thank them just fine..." he says to Anoki and he nods his head in response to Anoki saying that its good that he is staying. He thinks its good to be staying too. He has definitely founda home here and plans to remain here for the rest of his life. However, as Anoki continues his comment his ears redden quickly in something of a wolfish blush. Both he and Niyt had told Anoki awhile ago that they were just friends, hopefully good friends, but not romantic friends, "Umm...well Anoki I'm sure that there will be puppies in the pack." He turns his head toward Niyt, silently imploring her for help.
Thanking the prey is certainly good. It helps their spirits rest easier, and helps keep wolves mindful of what they do in the course of hunting. They must kill to live; but to live, not for pleasure. Niyt smiles, and nods. At her brother's other comment, she laughs, not nearly so embarassed. "There should be puppies, yes." Though as for her and Coinin... "Well, perhaps he'll find someone, or perhaps I will." Have puppies, yes. Together? Wellll, that's something different. "Or perhaps there'll be someone else." She flicks an ear toward Rayen for just a moment, an unconscious gesture prompted by her thoughts, and then toward her brother again. "Maybe even you." She tilts her head, consideringly, then asks, "Have you met Catori yet?"
The comment from Anoki brings a small giggle from Rayen though she doesn't chime in just yet. The thought of puppies brings back memories, though not all are fond. The mention of her niece brings a small smile to her maw, and she hoped that maybe this Anoki had seen her neice at least more then she, then she could at least know that Catori was ok. Puppies on the brain for Cat' though? That really makes the she-wolf giggle.
"Buh.. Wuh, me? I couldn't have puppies, sis. I mena, like, What would I tell'em, 'I see dead animals'? They'd think theyr daddy was nuts." He pauses, then considers, "... I thought mom an' dad were nuts till I started talkin' to the spirits, too," he murmurs, with a frown, and a sigh. "... Besides, it's too soon. I .. don't want to have puppies until I know one of them might be momma." He says, frowning at his feet.
Coinin is pleased that Niyt came to his defense. Yes. That's as good of an explanation as any, "Anoki I'm sure some day you will be a fine dad..." With that he raises himself to his paws and smiles over toward Rayen and Niyt, "I think I'm going to go out on patrol now." Yep. Definitely still embarassed and wanting to get away before he looks too foolish. It's not that he doesn't want to find someone, he has already asked Tariro for permission, its just that he doesn't like to be put on the spot about it. While he has certainly relaxed a great deal since he arrived, in some respects he is still a very private wolf, "Anoki I'll find you later for some hunting...maybe even teach you how to defend yourself." he says, and with that he is off.
The moment when Niyt realizes she has turned into her mother has the most fascinating expression. She looks like she's taken a thick, snow-covered tree-branch right across the face. She's been /matchmaking/. Not just this once, either. She's become Alaqua, only... she doesn't have a Shag of her own, among other differences. Still. The flabbergasted look lasts a few moments, and then she shakes her head, trying to clear it. Her mother. She only half hears her brother's first objection - not like she'd be any better, so far as the Weird Parent thing is concerned - and then returns to really paying attention for the last part. Ah. She nods gently. Not like their mother doesn't live on in some ways - like the one she just noticed - but she can understand her brother's desire. "You'll know when the time is right," she says. "Don't let anyone hurry you." Not even - maybe especially not - her. When Coinin heads off, she gives him a nod, but she's still got a thing to think.
Nodding his head, Anoki considers the words of not being rushed, before he looks at his paws, and sighs. "I'm too young to have puppies anyway, right now I mean, seriously. I'm barely not a puppy myself."
Not this spring, certainly. It would be possible for Anoki to have pups next spring - physically so, at least - but it's probably better if he waits a while longer than that. Another few years, to grow into himself. Niyt nods. "There's time. Uncle Tariro still has a bit before he forgets what it's like to have his ears chewed on."
