Sanuye - female Coyote
Bristlecone - male Coyote
With a Full Chorus of Fish and Lizards
---The Desert, near an Isolated Oasis---
Sanuye has spent a good amount of the day wandering through the area and checking out old rabbit warren's for any sign of the rabbits. So far she's coming up empty in the rabbit area and hasn't seen to many other things hoping or running around just yet it would seem. At the moment she is making her way back to the area where they have been sleeping at for the past few days.
Bristlecone's own wanderings seem to have brought him back earlier. The yote is sitting on a flat bit of rock near the temporary den, looking out across the desert at the scattered cacti and rocks. Sanuye's approach gets his attention, though, and he looks back toward her and gives a yarp of greeting.
Sanuye ears perk while she glances towards the other and offers him a smile. A slight yip escapes her while she trots onwards and hops up onto the rock next to him, settling to her haunches. "How are you doing tonight?"
Bristlecone's tail gives a brief wag, rustling at the sand, and he grins. "Oh, I'd say I'm doing all right. You know. All things considered."
Sanuye ears perk while she peers over at him curious like and tilts her head, maw twitching. "Well.. I hope that's a good thing?" She questions while watching him.
Bristlecone laughs. "Yeah. Good things, bad things, but all turn out okay in the end things." He grins, then hehs as he droops his muzzle a bit. "Still getting the hang of desert-hunting, though. It's not exactly the same as the forest is."
Sanuye looks amused and chuckles while nodding as she flops down upon her belly. "Yes I can understand that." Her tail thumps against the ground. "Yes I can understand that. I'm sure something will turn up sooner then later." She offers before a yawn escapes him.
Bristlecone nods, and leans over to nudge his muzzle along Sanuye's back lightly. "Yeah, bound to be something. We just have to figure out what. And where. And how!"
Sanuye chuckles once more and nods with a smile while she glances over at him. "So how are you liking being out here?" She questions, ears perking. "Other then you know.. The hunting bit of coruse."
Bristlecone laughs. "Other than that." He wurfs, and gives himself a fur-floofing shake. "It's been fun. Even with, you know, the floods and scorching sun and lack of rabbits and..." The coyote grins widely. "Really, though. It's like... I can do whatever I want, you know? Even if it means going hungry, it's 'cause of what I did."
Sanuye grins at this and hums before nodding. "I see.. An don't worry you won't go hungrey. Promise." She offers with a smile before shifting up onto her haunches. A paw is lifted and she pokes at him. "WE can go check out that part of the stream I was talking about, that has the fish in it."
Bristlecone grins, and bats back lightly as he's poked. "We can put my alleged fishing skills to the test!" he replies, and nods. "I almost caught a lizard, but those things are /fast/. Just kinda scuttling along sidewise and bam. Gone."
Sanuye blinks and grins before noding and hops down from the rock and starts to trot off. "Maybe you can show me a few things." This said with an amused tone, her tail swaying about and she glances over to him. "Lizard's are indeed fast, and they sorta taste like sand."
Bristlecone stands up and shakes himself before bounding to catch up with Sanuye and trotting along with her. "Hmm," he says at the thought of sandy lizard. "Perhaps I'm happier not having caught one after all!"
Sanuye grins and nods while she trots along. "Well that mgith be a good idea." She offers with an amused tone. "They taste like hard crunchy sand bits."
Bristlecone makes faces as though he has those hard crunchy sand bits on his tongue right this very moment. "Okay. Sand, pretty good for running on, even if it does keep sliding around. Not so good for eating!"
Sanuye giggles softly while glancing over and catching sight of the face he makes. A chuckle escapes her once more and she trods along onwards towards where there is an oasis as it were within the desert. It doesn't take them all that long to get there actually and the water level isn't all that high from the looks of it. Still there is a good amount of water that is seen, and it is flowing back the direct they came from where Bristlecone is actually from. "There is be." She offers while troding on towards the water.
Bristlecone grins at the sound of laughter, but before long his attention is taken by the water. "Aha!" he says, and hmms. He pads closer, looking for the fish hiding in it and watching how they dart away from the shadow he casts. "Certainly seems, mmh, wet..." he says, and peers at the direction of the light before starting to circle the pool.
Sanuye hums softly while glancing around and tilts her head. "Ya well.. Water does tend to be wet." She points out as she moves along in the other direction. A few shadows rest within the water where the fish are drifting along under the surface.
Bristlecone smirks. Minor details like that! He finds a likely spot, half-shaded by a rocky outcropping, and steps into the water, wading until he's about chest deep. The fish run away at first, but when the 'yote stays still, they gradually return.
Sanuye ears perk while shew atches him and trods on back towards where he is and stays put on dry land for now, just watching curiously. Her tail sways around a few times.
Now begins the part of Bristlecone's Fishing Show where he waits. It's rather boring, honestly. He stands there, like some giant clump of pondscum, letting the breeze above the surface the the lazy currently below the surface ruffle his fur. The fish creep closer, and he manages to do no more than have a put-upon expression when one goes so far as to nibble his tail. He's just waiting until one of them... there! His muzzle darts below the surface, and all the fish scatter wildly, but one of them doesn't scatter fast enough, and Bristlecone chomps down on the silvery scales.
Sanuye looks rather curious at what he is doing to say the least. Her maw twitches and she licks across her maw before settling on her haunches, figuring it i sbest for her to keep quiet. She wiggles on her paws while watching the fish creep back towards where Bristle is, a slight oh escapes her seeing how close they actually get. Fishing isn't something she is that good at mind you so she is trying to learn. As the fish is grabbed she yips out slight and grins.
Bristlecone turns around, muzzle full of wriggly fish, and he chomps down on it as he carries it back to shore. He takes it four or five paces from the water before he finally sets it down and delivers a snap-chomp that stops the wiggles, then grins to Sanuye. "They can sorta flex back in, if you're not careful..."
Sanuye looks amused at the sight of him and the fish, her tail thumping against the ground a few times. "Look at that.. I never saw anyone get a fish before." She offers while tilting her head to peer over at him. "Oh... I guess that sorta makes sense."
Bristlecone hehs. "It's not too hard. You mostly just have to be really patient. Well, and figure out where to actually aim for, 'cause water is tricksy like that."
Sanuye smiels and nods while she chuckles as she glances back towards the water. A ear flicking forward and she soon moves over and stands in the water peering down at it to see if the fish will wander on back.
Bristlecone pads over to stand by Sanuye, a few steps back, and watches. Fortunately, fish have very little in the way of memory. They go 'OH f**k SCARY THING!', run away, and then a few minutes later they're back to swimming along happily going 'IMA FISH!'
Sanuye is doing her best to keep herself still as she eyes the water and the fish that come swimswiming back over to the area. Her head slowly lowers, her nose a few inches from the ground as she just freezes, waiting for the right moment. That moment takes a bit longer before she snaps downwards into the water, at first getting nothing but she snaps two more times.. An still nothing.. Save for a rather wet looking yote. With the fish darting away she sputters slightly but stays put, seeming rather determined to get a fish!
Bristlecone watches from the shore, trying not to disturb the fishies with his presence. After a few of those bites that snap nothing but water, he offers, "Try to get an idea of what the depth's like... the water makes distance look funny."
Sanuye glances over curiously, ears perking and she ohs softly and soon glancs back to the water, shifting about a few times until she gets a better idea of how deep the water is. She gives herself a shake sending water flying and then looks back to the water, waiting on the fish! Once again the fish are slowly moving back over to where she is as if there was nothing there trying to get them once again. It doesn't take very long for them to be swiming all around and between her legs. Her maw opens slightly as she lowers her head a few moments and then ones again snaps down into the water.. At first it doesn't look like she has caught anything but soon enough her head lifts and there is a wiggling fish within her jaws.
Bristlecone was right in the middle of preparing the sympathetic ear-droop of saying it's okay and fish are challenging and he's sure she'll do better with a bit of practice, and then she goes and CATCHES the FISH! So out the window goes that droopiness, and instead there's a big ol' grin and a bark of triumph!
Sanuye grinds while she bounces around a few times and makes her way out of the water with the fish tightly within her jaws. A few chomps and the fish is well dead. She drops the fish upon the ground and grins. "I did!.. Thanks!" She offers with a few happy yips escaping her.
Bristlecone grins back, his tail wagging. "You see?" he says. "Nothin' to it!" Well, other than three or four failed tries and getting rather soaked, but that's easily enough solved by the sun, at least now that summer is nearing.
Sanuye grins and nods before giving herself a good shake, which sends the water flying in the process. "That was great.. Though... I think I got water up my nose." Her head lowers and she paws at her maw a few times.
Bristlecone giggles. "Yeah, that... kinda happens sometimes." He pads over and nudges her shoulder with his. "I never really figured out how to avoid it."
Sanuye grins and glances over to him and chuckles before nodding and she leans over to bump her head against his shoulder. "Thanks for showing and teaching me that."
Bristlecone grins, and nods. "You'll be able to do it faster with practice, too. I remember, Felix couldn't even do it at all for a while, but even he figured it out eventually."
Sanuye ears perk and she ohs softly, a chuckle escaping her in the process. "That's great to know.. Hopfully I won't get so much water up my nose in the process." She offers with a laugh escaping her before peering at the fish. "So.. What does it taste like anyway? They sorta feel well.. slimy.."
Bristlecone grins. "Well, if you do, you can always run around in the desert until it feels like it's turned to sand inside your nose. That'll balance out, right?" Okay, maybe not. He hehs. "Well, they're sorta, uhm... like how liver is. Sleek and wobbly. Oh! And they have lots of tiny little bones, so you hafta be careful eating them."
Sanuye chuckles and grins before noding. "Well.. That is a good point at least." She offers with an amused tone before looking back at the fish. Her tail swaying about and she hums before nodding. "Alright.."
Bristlecone laughs. "Never mind my explaining! Give it a try." He flops down, and holds one of the fishes between his paws, tugging at some of the skin to tear it off and start eating.
Sanuye settles downwards and looks over to Bristlecone and her maw twitches while she settles down upon her belly, forepaws resting around the fish she had caught. She wiggles slightly and then goes about starting to pull the scales off in order to get to said fish meats!
Bristlecone does the same, tugging at scales to the fishy meats inside! He eats with delicate little nibbles, working around those stabby little bones that fish are full of.
Sanuye tilts her head and sputters a moment as a sharp bone stick into her nose. She snorts a moment and then goes back to picking scales and the like off finding bits of fishy goodness in the process. "Well it an't bad.. Just a lot of work to get, an a lot of work to eat em."
Bristlecone looks up with concern at the spluttering, and then laughs in the end. "Well, yeah. If you get bigger fish it's better, more meat around the bones. But those are mostly just in big lakes."
Sanuye ears perk and she chuckles before nodding. "Well I suppose that does make sense huh?" She questions with an amused tone and thump of her tail. "I don't mind the taste though. Didn't think it would taste like this though."
Bristlecone nods. "It's not much like anything else," he says, and hehs. "Just... fishy." He takes another chomp or three, working around bones.
Sanuye shrugs slightly while she takes hold of the fish by the tail and gives it a good shake once she's gotten most of the meat off. The fish is soon dropped and she grins. "Ya well.. I guess you have a point there.. But it was different for me."
Bristlecone finishes off his meal, and laughs, peering sidewise at Sanuye. "Yeah?"
Sanuye nods at this and rolls about to her back, forepaws batting out at him a few times in the process. "Yup, never had fish before. Could never catch em before."
Bristlecone reaches over, batting back, and then flops right down next to her. "I guess everyone learns something different, right? I mean, I still haven't had those lizards!"
Sanuye chuckles and nods, a half wruff escaping her in the process. "Yes.. As for the lizards I would rather take the fish over them anytime."
Bristlecone laughs, and rests his head down against Sanuye's side. "See, now I'm gonna have to try them. Just to see!"
Sanuye giggles at this and leans close to Bristlecone, a slight yawn escaping her in the process. She shifts and and lets her hand settle against his shoulders. "Well maybe I can catch you a couple of them."
Bristlecone chuckles. "Perhaps you can. After all, what is life without being investigated to the fullest, no matter how much it tastes like sand?"
Sanuye grins and giggles softly before nodding. "Yes well.. That is true. I can surely say that I finally got to eat a fish. An I'll get you a few lizards and then you can say you ate them too."
Bristlecone nods. "And maybe after I say that, I'll say 'Never Again! Not Ever Unless I'm Really Hungry And That's All That's There!'"
Sanuye laughs out softly and grins. "Ya that's true.. Not like you have to go eating it again if you don't want to." Her tail thumps against the ground. "An truthfully I wouldn't go after the lizards unles I couldn't find anything else."
Bristlecone hmms. "Well, then, I should hardly be making you catch one! The flavor would get stuck in your mouth. No, this sounds like a mistake I had best make for myself."
Sanuye looks amused and glances over to Bristlecone, a soft wruffle escaping her in the process. "I don't mind getting you a few." She grins and winks at him playful like.
Bristlecone grins, and shakes his head playfully. "No, no. My mind is made up. It is a young coyote's rite of passage. Lizard Catching. It has been written on the canyon walls, in the patterns of the tree bark. So it must be, and so it shall be done!"
Sanuye lifts a brow, a laugh soon escapes her and she grinds while hopping up to her paws and hops back a few steps. "Well then.. Come on, lets go find you a lizard to catch." She lets out with a laugh.
Bristlecone laughs, and nods. "A fine expedition! Noble! Suitable for one of my presumed stature-to-be at such a time as I have done it." Is he even making sense anymore? Does it matter?
Sanuye grins and nods while she trots off, her tail swaying about in the process. "Just gotta look under some rocks and bushes to find 'em."
Bristlecone nods, following along and then starting to veer back and forth, peeking under bushes and at the various rocks. Heeeeere, lizard lizard lizard...
Sanuye ears flick forward and bath while she trots along in search of the said lizards! She sniffs around a few times, nosing under bushes in the process and pauses while licking across her maw. Some skittering is heard in a bush and she pauses to peer into it and snuffles under it quickly. "May have one over here!"
Oh-ho! Bristlecone, on the job! He bounds over toward where this alleged lizard allegedly is, and peers under the bush. Why, this bush is rustling! And there is, in fact, skittering happening along that sand underneath it. Lizardtime!
Sanuye giggles out softly and shifts around the bush sniffing here and there upon the sand. She hops back a few times and she swats out at a clump of sand and she tries to send the lizard running back towards Birstle.. If that's what it is under the sand there..
Hey! goes the lizard. I was just hangin' out, doin' lizardy things, and now this giant coyowhatsit is harshing my exothermic buzz! I will now make a hissy sort of noise, followed immediately by scuttling out into the daylight and running a zigzag course through the sand! Oh, darn it! Here comes the reddish coyothang running after me!
Sanuye tilts her head while peering after the lizard. She shifts forward on her paws following after it in a quick few bounces. She'll make sure the lizard doesn't come backwards and escape!
Bristlecone chases after the scurrying lizard, trying to match the zigs and zags, only while being a half-step ahead, you know, so the lizard doesn't just get away! Along it he bounds, and he's catching up until it tries to reverse - hey, what?! - and then discovers Sanuye and re-reverses to run forward agai- whoa, there it goes! After it! You won't get away from me you pesky lizardude! His jaws snap at the lizardite's tail, and catch it! Hahhhh wait a moment, the lizard is still running despite its tail being in Bristlecone's jaws. Its... detached... tail. Dernit!
Sanuye continues to run and chase after the lizard, her tail wagging about in the process. She bounces a few times in the process. A half yip escaping her once the lizard is ..caught? Or well part of it at least! She zigs and then zags and slams her paw down upon the lizard and wruffs out before flicking the lizard towards Bristle to see if he can grab hold of it better this time.
Hey! goes the lizard. I liked that tail! I was getting some good use out of that tail! It was suitable for the summer fashions, and now I am going to be TAILLESS and everyone knows that is such an AUTUMN fashion choice and the other lizards will MOCK ME MERCILESSLY! This is so devestating to my psyche and my inner self that I will fail to notice the other coyote who has circled around me, until her paw comes down on me like the crushing weight of my social and existential despair, and then flings me through the air like the precursor of the ostracization that will surely follow. I am doomed, and the crunching of jaws around my torso mid-air comes as a blessed relief from the SUFFERING that is LIFE.
Sanuye bounces on her paws a few more tmes and grins, her tail swaying while she trots on over to Bristle. "Hey, you got it!" She offers happly, her tail wagging about. "Quick little buggers huh?"
Yes! He got it! Bristlecone grins around a mouthful of lizard (tail not included) and nods firmly. He gives the corpse a few testing chomps, just to make sure it doesn't wriggle away as these things are so wont to do, and then carefully trots to a non-sandy rock to set it down. Can't have this test contaminated by ordinary sand, after all. "They sure are!" he agrees. "But I got 'im!" A brief pause, and a grin. "Well, with some help!" Then he lowers his muzzle, preparing to take the first real bite. Sandy, yes/no?
Sanuye tilts her head and giggles softly while she trots along after him, a yawn escaping her in the process. "Well you did help me with the fish." She points out, her tail swaying about happly in the process. Soon she flops down and stretches out. As for the lizard it should be crunch and sandy and well, lizardy!
Bristlecone gnaws on it. Okay, thing one. Where's the lizard getting off, having hide this thick? It's like a deer-hide-thickness, only it's just a tiny lizard! Hmmmm. Not racking up the points, little lizard. Thing two... hmm. He gets a considering expression on his face as he chews. "It's not... well. It's sorta sandy, but it more tastes like... like bones. Dry bones. Even the bloody parts are dry."
Sanuye sticks her tongue out at him. "Well, I told you." She offers with an amused tone. A glance is offered towards him and she just grins, a faint giggle escaping her. "But now you at least knows what it tastes like." This said with an amused tone. She lets her head settle fore a forepaw, seems like someone is thinking about sleeping from the looks of it.
Bristlecone laughs. "Yeah. You did." Funny how she tends to be right about things. Lizards. Canyon deathtraps. All those sorts of things. "But now I know for myself. Otherwise I might have wondered... forever..." He grins, and tries another bite... then decides maybe he wasn't so hungry after all. That fish was pretty good. And, uh, filling. Yeah. So he doesn't need this lizard. He sets it down, and pads a few steps away to flop.
Sanuye ears perk and she peers over at him grinning slightly. She chuckles and shifts rolling over and settles down once more curled up against his side in the process. Her tail curling at her side. "Well now you don't have to wonder." A soft giggle escaping her. "Tomorrow I'll show you this little cave down the way past where the fish are. Interesting rocks and things there." Another yawn escapes her and she closes her eyes. "Going to take a nap right now though."
Bristlecone nods, and settles against Sanuye. "That sounds good..." he says, and closes his eyes.
The dead lizard, alone and desolate. Half-eaten, and yet he cannot even have the fulfillment in DEATH that he so lacked in LIFE. No, he will not be CONSUMED as part of the CYCLE of LIFE. He is DOOMED to ignominy. And flies. Here comes one now, buzzing along and then landing on his eyeball. Seriously, his eyeball? What's up with that? It's not a very fly pla- and now there's another one! Oh, he would give those flies a thwacking, he would, a thwack of his lizardy tongue but good! That would show them! ...if only he was not DEAD. This will join the many regrets of his life, along with his unfulfilling romantic life and his poor sartorial choices. Is it any wonder he ended up like this? He can hear his mother now, telling him to straighten up and skitter right. Oh, mother dearest, you were right - right about everything - but your poor son only realized it too late. I am so sorry, mother; and on this sad picture, the curtain closes on this humble lizard. Farewell!

Farewell!
