Setting
A small, small shift in the river brings the channel to bear in a wider, calmer body of water. This area is clear of brush and the riversides are low and show clear evidence of being traveled well and frequently, ranging from simple signs to footprints in the bank both fresh and old. A few berry bushes litter the western side closer to the fallen log, stopping just before they get there but offering a quick meal to any creature so inclined. Because of the lazily-running current, many fish seem to have made this particular spot their home.
---
A fine morning finds the fox, Braxton, in a bit of a pickle. Pickle is a friendly term for how he's feeling. He woke up, and immediately wished he didn't have to. His energy is gone, he never wants to be anywhere but where he lies. A terrible thing. Not that he thinks he would be able to get up. It's practically a struggle just to lift his head. And that brings him to his next problem. Whenever he does this, he notes that he... the world never stays still. So, over the course of the entire day, he's maybe moved only a few feet before giving up. Yes, Braxton is sick. Intensely. And he's not having fun with it.
Rye pads along the walk, He heads back to where he was staying last. His tail twitches some, then stops. There's a fox over there, and it's not even looking like it's running away. He realizes that he is up wind of him too. He stops and cocks his head.. "Hello?" He asks, wondering why the animal is laying there.. maybe it's dead.
Nope. Definitely not dead. Wanting to be? Not quite, yet. But not dead. The sick fox's life is miserable at this moment. "Hello? Is that you, death?" Okay, now he's being facetious, but if he can't have some humor, then this whole day would've been miserable. All told, he's cause several creatures much grief with his "humor."
Rye cocks his head some.. "I've been called a lot of things before, but not that." He sits down. "I guess you aren't dead though. Are.. you okay?" of course the fox isn't okay.. but it should be a standard question. He sniffs the air, but being upwind of the fox, he can't smell anything.
From the northeast, a cat appears walking down the bank of the river. Looking visibly tired, he approaches the Coyote and the Fox. "Heh. Somehow, I had a feeling I'd find you here, Rye."
Rye turns to Dunkin, "Yeah." is what he responds, but he's more curious about the Fox. He ponders some. "are you .. sick?" he asks. That sounds at least not healthy. He wonders. "something? What have you been doing the past few days?" He wonders, hoping that the cat will listen too.
Dunkin sits down next to the Fox and the Coyote, seemingly unaffected by the large predator next to him. It's clear that these two have met before, and left on good terms. "I think I might be...I've been feeling really tired all day. But whenever I lay down to try and sleep, I can't." He says, with noticeable exhaustion in his voice. "I tried laying down for a while, but I still don't feel any better. Then I remembered our conversation we had before we parted ways last time -- about some disease you were trying find more information about. So I decided to go looking for you and see if you knew anything new...didn't expect you find you back here, though!" He notices the Fox, who looks even worse off than he does. "Huh. Evidently, this is affecting Foxes too."
This causes Braxton to look at Dunkin in extreme interest. So... he's sick too? What is this disease? It's known? And... yes, it seems to be affecting more than just foxes, now that Braxton considers what this cat has said. "... What? This.. thing I have is spreading?" Thud. And his head is back down. Stupid worldspinning. Grr.
Rye blinks some.. "well, I didn't know it was a disease, I know it was a sicknes.. are you sick too, Dunkin?" He looks the cat over, then turns back to look over at the fox. "Maybe we should figure out where you two were before this. When did you first start feeling sick, uh.. " he ponders.. "don't think I ever picked up your name. but where did you start feeling sick fox?" He asks him first then he'll find out about the cat. It is interesting that they do feel this way...
Dunkin tries to remember when he started feeling bad. "It was earlier today. I had woken up from a glorious nap near the barn. I started to wander around a little, but I never really shook off being tired. In fact, it just got worse and worse..."
Braxton's story is much like the young cats. Woke up in the morning. "This morning." he says. "Woke up, and just like the cat, here, says, never stopped feeling tired. Then I took my first step. It was not friendly. World spins, barely could stand. So I've stayed in this spot all morning." And of course, he tags on a somewhat wry thought: "No one likes jokes."
Rye looks over at the cat and then the fox. "Hmm, well, what about what you two ate yesterday or in the evening?" maybe it's in the food or something. and it's strange, they both have the same conditions.. is that normal? He thinks.. the cat was a little bit aways... so it couldn't be something in the air in the area... hmmm. They didn't have this happen down on the plains where he was from. And he feels fine.
Follow the river, and it'll lead you to interesitng things. Well, at least that's why Raijin thought to himself when he set out this morning. And indeed it did. The black wolf stops just past a bush; a good half a dozen feet or so from the trio of animals. Rai glances over at the coyote for a second before looking down at the fox and cat. Having already eaten, Raijin isn't giving off that feeling of 'I'm hunting, you're my dinner'. More along the lines of 'I'm bored, just exploring'.
Dunkin hasn't eaten anything unusual lately. "The last thing I ate was a mouse earlier this morning...but nothing out of the ordinary. Besides, if it was something in the food, wouldn't there be a lot more animals getting sick?" The extent of his exhaustion makes him oblivious to the Wolf which just entered the area.
A long, thick tail swings down from the ascending branches, twitching lazily. "Couldn't help but overhear..." came the snide, although tired remark of the young cougar that lay above them. His reddish eyes flicker with fatigue. "Tell me what's going on, eheh?"
Braxton doesn't notice the wolf, but he *does* notice the cougar. Now he is somewhat annoyed. Good graces, is *everybody* wandering the wilds but *him?!* He should just stick to his den with Terri, trying to eke out a living. But nooooo, he just had to go off and be a stupid *moron* and go wandering again. Then she found him. Now he's sick. His life is just... Grrgh, he tries his damndest not to let this bother him. But then again. Who is on his paws and who *isn't* on his paws in this conversation? Grump.
Rye is about to add some more, but then blinks as there's a wolf walking down. Fortunatly, he doesn't seem hungry so he doesn't have to worry about trying to defend the area.. Which is good, cause he would probably lose. He turns back to Dunkin, "I don't know, so far you two are sick.." then hears the sound from above, and looks up. Noticing the way the cougar is with the eyes and tired remark.. though that could be passed off as normal feline.. "okay, three are sick." whever that is above him. "I would love to tell you what's going on. He looks over at Braxton. "So what about you?" He asks the fox again, not wanting to leave the fellow canid out.
Raijin glances over at the cat, letting his eyes drift over towards the cougar afterwards and he just mutters to himself, "The entire forest going under or something?" He just sits down where he is; settling into a comfy position to just listen in on this. He'll speak up eventually if he wants to. He looks back at the coyote for a second; at least someone is taking charge... in a way.
Dunkin suddenly notices both the Cougar AND the Wolf. His instinct tells him to run away, but remembers the promise that Rye made a few days earlier to protect him. His being sick would probably make it a futile effort, anyways. He tries not to be bothered by it, seeing as the Wolf doesn't look too interested in a meal and the Cougar looks mostly friendly, albeit somewhat strange. Either way, he scoots just a liiiiiiiitle bit closer to Rye, keeping his eyes fixed on the Wolf for any sudden movement.
LaVeaux clambors, very slowly, down the trunk... Oi, will the ground stop spinning. His ear pin and he stalks toward the others, a growl escaping his form. "First, state your names... I must know who i am having such an important conference with..."
Braxton flicks an ear in irritation at his problem here. Okay, this stinks. He's eaten recently, he's actually not even hungry! "Last thing I ate was a rat or two. Good find." Then the cougar demands his name. How direct. "I am called Braxton. I've been many places, but this... sickness is entirely unusual to me, and it seems to be uncaring about who it afflicts." He could be wrong, but if a fox, a cat, and a cougar can catch this thing... it all just sounds like some sick joke.
Rye makes sure he keeps the wolf just on the edge of his vision, just to be careful. He notices movement on the other side of him, and notices it's only teh cat moving a little closer. He's not sure what all is going on. He can only blink when the feline demands names. "Important... I do beg your pardon. We are having a discussion." He tries to keep an eye on the cougar too, oh jeeze this will be so hard keeping track of the wolf and feline. He finally looks back at the fox, whatever happens will happen. "Hmm, " he ponders, nearly mumbling the rest, "did we offend nature?" Living near the two leggers that he used to live by, some of the things they would do and say rubbed off. "It does sound uncaring that is true." he says outloud
Raijin glances over at the cougar and arches a furred brow as he's asked for his name. "The name is Raijin, I'm from the Lazuli pack," says Raijin in a slightly quieter voice, he doesn't want to yell or speak loudly as he doesn't feel the need to do so. He glances back at the fox for a second as he says, "Seems that even a fox can't outwit everything, hm?"
Dunkin Looks over to the Cougar. "I'm Dunkin. Your typical, lazy cat. I haven't been in this area for very long..." He trails off, realizing that he could be accused for brining the disease with him. "but...but we didn't have anything like this back where I came from..." He trails off again, trying to formulate an argument in his mind. "I'm sure it has nothing to do with me, though. I just started feeling bad today."
"Good day to you. I am LaVeaux," the cougar states simply, eyeing each othe the animals for a moment, memorizing their scents, memorizing their appearance. "I have noticed that this disease has swept over more than just this forest...it's all over."
Rye files away the fact that there is a pack wolf here. He has a quiet voice though, but doesn't sound sick like the other three. Leave it to a cougar to make everyone on edge. "No one is accusing you of bringing it, you were quite healthy the other day." he says to reassure Dunkin. "I am Rye." he finally answers to the feline adding, "so what else ha e you heard about it?" He just tries to find out whatever information he can.
Raijin glances over at the cat, and then at the rest of the group in this little area. "It does seem that it is everywhere. I can only hope and it doesn't affect the young," says the wolf in response to the cougar, looking away from the larger feline as he looks back at the other three.
Dunkin ponders the words of the Cougar and Wolf, and then speaks up again. This time a little softer, the effects of traveling and sitting up for so long have begun to take it's toll. "It can't be something in the food, then. If we've all only gotten sick recently, then it has to be something else." His eyes wander across everyone there. "What could affect all of us over such a big area almost simultaneously?"
Braxton decides he must find out more about this disease. But, before he can even ask any questions of his own, *WHUMP!* His head hits the ground and next thing any sane creature (Which, at this time, seems to exclude Braxton.) seems to observe is a sleeping, sick fox.
Rye has a slight pained look when the wolf brings up young, but doesn't say anything. "I would hope that it goes away soon." he turns to Dunkin, "Maybe we did something to offend nature." echoing what he said quieter before. "Where I came from, there were two-leggers there. They had these things they did, uh.. purification I think is what they called it. They had rituals and dances they would use to help keep nature happy." He stops and looks at the cat. "Parasite?" He isn't sure of that term. Then turns quickly as he hears the Whump... "Uh.. Braxton?" he says, then notices the ribs still moving.. must have just been exhausted.
Raijin's eyes flick over towards the fox as it passes out and he smirks slightly before he shakes his head. He glances over at the cougar and says, "That is also a good idea." He glances back at the cat and says, "I wouldn't put it past the two leggers to have some sort of hand in this. They aren't the cleanest push of creatures I've seen."
Terri runs up to the group and shouts "braxton" she only saw him fall but did not manage to see why. she managed to catch a rabbit despite being a little exhusted over the last few days. she is healthy but finding braxcton took alot out of her and she still has not fully recovered from that. She begins pushing the dead carcus towards her mate saying "wake up and eat you will be better with food." she turns to the others and asks "how did this happen?"
Dunkin looks surprised at the latest animal to enter the scene. "He...was fine a moment ago. He just kinda fell over. Kaput." He looks down at Braxton, who's now fast asleep. "He hasn't been feeling well, though. Me and the Cougar haven't been, either."
LaVeaux's ears raise as he watches the reddish blur of a fox sprint into his vision. His seeing eye focused, as if trying to decipher what this was, but his nose confirmed a vulpine scent. "I wouldn't put it past the two-leggers...although if it effects us, it may effect them, too."
Rye blinks as the fox runs up. he's about to answer but Dunkin does it for him. "Basically, that's what happened." he turns back to the wolf. "Well, I would agree with that new batch of two-leggers.. the ones with the loudsticks. The older two-leggers, the ones that have been around here for a while are different." He listens to the others. "Well, I think I"m going to search around some more answers. I will be back in a day or two, maybe I can find out more information." He gets up and starts to pad off to the West.
Raijin watches the new fox zoom into view and stop at the one who's passed out. The wolf stays silent as he looks over at the cougar and says, "True in that regard, but you never know with some of them." He watches the cat walk away, and he says, "Information is of great importance at the moment. I wish you luck."
Terri nuzzles her passed out mate saying "I wish I could cure him. what do you know so far of the disease?"
Dunkin watches Rye leave the scene. His friend, and his protection are gone now, but he doesn't feel afraid anymore by the presence of the Wolf and Cougar. A Cat, a Fox, and Cougar? Whatever it is that's going around has no discrimination against any species. The Wolf could very well be next...and clearly both of them have ones they care about. It's going to take more than the the cooperation of just one pack or one species together to figure out what's going on, and it looks like they've conceded to that. Upon having this revelation in his mind, he speaks up with a little more confidence to the Vixen. "All we can figure out is that it seems to have started just today...and it's not exclusive to this area. The Cougar and the Wolf can confirm it's been happening elsewhere. Everywhere!"
"At this point either we help each other out," LaVeaux sighs, eyeing them all again, "Or we all perish. This illness is impairing everyone's ability to function."
Raijin gives a small chuckle. "It seems that we have to call upon favors from other animals to help each other survive. The cougars have helped the wolves before, if I'm not mistaken." He looks back at the cat and two foxes, "And I'm sure you three can find ways of staying healthy. Even if one has to depend on another."
Dunkin Hears a thump in the direction of the Cougar, and sees that he too has passed out now. "Huh. Good thing I'm just tired..."
Raijin hms slightly. "Perhaps it's time me to retire back to my pack's den. I wouldn't want to wake up in a place that I'm not familiar with." He bows his head to the vixen and the cat and says, "Stay well, and keep an eye out."
Terri nods and says "we will I will stayu with my mate I think I will sleep next to him to help him stay warm"
Dunkin sighs. He's getting quite tired from talking this long. "If I learn anything new, I'll try to find one of you guys...heck, anyone. If this is really as widespread as it sounds, then all the other animals around here probably know about it by now." The cat stands up and begins looking along the edge of the brush for a place to lay down. "We have no idea what this is, so take care of yourselves..." He trails off his sentence, more exhausted than ever. Having found a warm spot on the ground, he lays his tired body down. His eyes wander between the sleeping Fox, his Vixen cuddling up next to him, and the sleeping Cougar before finally closing his eyes last. This time however, he falls asleep right away.
