Characters:
Raijin: Lazuli Wolf
Miakoda: Lazuli Beta
Riko: Lazuli pup
Shikoba: Lazuli Pup
Scene Overview: Raijin tells Mia that he's not feeling well as the two pups play around. Shikoba is frightened by Raijin because an ill wolf isn't the most friendly of animals. Mia tell RAi to stay away from the den if the illness gets worse.
Scene:
It's a restless night...for Miakoda, anyway. Though the sun has set, leaving the sky a patchwork quilt of blackness and stars, the Beta female can't seem to find solace. With her young ones asleep in the den, she has ventured out and sits in the clearing of the undergrowth, ears erect and eyes staring out through the foliage, waiting. Waiting for what is the question, but it's a question that not even she has the answer to. Paws itching, she soon stands and paces around slowly, pretending to check on things by lowering her head and sniffing every now and then. Something's up, that's for sure, but not knowing exactly what can drive a wolf crazy.
First he meets with that small group of mismatched animals, and now he's feeling like utter crap. Raijin is laying next to a bush; his black fur letting him be hidden in the shadow and it being nighttime is helping as well. The black wolf just keeps his eyes closed, and he's muttering to himself quite endlessly. Miakoda's fidgeting doesn't even get his attention, or if it does... it doesn't show.
Night, day... in the den, they're much the same to Riko. Outside, though, it's the dark hours that suit her best; thus, this is the only time she ventures out. Leaving the rest of the pups behind, she pads up to the entrance of the den, but stops there, eyeing the ground and the outside in general. She still doesn't entirely trust that it's really going to stay put, even if it smells and sounds fine all the time. Riko snuffles briefly at the ground, then walks out a few steps before whirling around and making sure the den's still all there.
Well, at least it's quiet. Miakoda has to be thankful for that, and she tilts her head up to peer through the shadows of the branches of trees above. It's quiet, but not silent. Above the sound of swaying branches and rustling leaves, there's ... mumbling? Her ears prick again as she sets her attention forward, glancing this way and that in order to try to spy the source of the noise. She notes the arrival of Riko first, and her tail sways at the pup. "Hello.." sniff sniff. "Riko. Why aren't you asleep with your brothers and sister, hm?" She grins a little, but she hasn't forgotten the noise. At least she hasn't sniffed a stranger.
Raijin is no stranger to this pack since he lives here... or tries to as much as possible. He shakes his head, causing some leaves to fall onto his fur and he blows one of them off of his muzzle before he just plops his head down onto his feet. "This... sucks," grumbles Raijin. He looks over at Miakoda and the other pup; wanting to call to them... but he doesn't feel up to it.
Riko turns at the sound of her name, ears angling towards Miakoda. "Slept before." While the rest of them were out playing, in fact; regular night owl, this one. "Not tired now." Listening to the leaves rustle, the pup's ears prick curiously. She peers in Raijin's direction, tailtip waving slightly, and starts down his way. What's over there?
"You miss all the fun," says Miakoda to the pup, tail continuing to wave. "You should sleep at this time so that you can have energy to play with your siblings." And that is her lesson for the day. She glances back to the darkness, having heard words this time. Someone's over there, and as Riko moves to investigate, Miakoda moves too, testing the air the closer she gets. "Raijin?" She squints as she peers forward, finally catching sight of the dark wolf. "Hey," greeted with the beginnings of a smile, but it freezes on her face and melts away as he watches him. "Are you alright?"
Another small figure emerges from the den. Shikoba is still very leery of this 'outside' thing. So far, it seem quite overrated. It's colder, and there are strange noises and smells all the time. But when her mother is not there, Shikoba misses her terribly. And so she ventures forth, tiny black nose sniffing wildly. As the world above becomes clear, Shikoba takes in the sight of the other pup first. After her, Miakoda comes into view. Almost immediatly, the pup's tail bagins to wriggle, and she makes a beeline for her mother, no matter who or what she has to push past on the way. "Mama?" She has a one track mind; at the moment, she's completely ignorant to Raijin's presence, or any hint of it.
Raijin grumbles some more and lifts a paw lethargically to covers his eyes. "Grgh," is all the response the pup and Miakoda get from the black wolf as he grumbles. Apparently, he doesn't feel like talking or he doesn't acknowledge that there are other wolves there.
Riko pauses to eye Miakoda. "...No," is the pup's stubborn declaration. She bounds down towards Raijin in an attempt to beat the older wolf. Not nearly as wary as Mia', Riko continues right on up to the other dark wolf and leans forward to sniff at his face. "You look like /you/ need t' sleep. Not /me/," she informs him sagely.
Miakoda twists her head this way and that, a frown now creasing her face as she watches the familiar male act so strangely. She glances down to the curious Riko. "Well.." she says as she lowers her head, "you don't nkow what you're missing. The birds, the warmth, the ... daylight. Maybe tomorrow you should try to wake up when the others do .. just this once to see if you like it." Her ears press back a little as she moves in try try to take the pup by the scruff of her neck and pull her away from Riko, her caution tangible.
What's this? She's not being given complete, unwavering attention? Shikoba flops down into a haphazard sit, staring at her mother with large, blue, borderline teary eyes. Ah, the self-centeredness of youth. Her head tilts over so slightly, just to eye Riko curiously. And just what is she up to? Shikoba keeps quiet, lacking the general boldness required to speak her mind.
Raijin moves the paw ever so slightly to look at the pup and Rai grumbles once more. "Sleep only makes me more tired. So there's no use to do so," grumbles the black wolf as he then looks up at Miakoda, fatigue /greatly/ apparent in his eyes and he glances at the older wolf and he's about to say something but it looks like the thought passes him by as he just lays his head down.
Riko squawks as she's picked up, and squirms (futilely) in Miakoda's grip. "Did! Didn't like it," the pup protests. "Put me down!"
With a squirmy pup in her mouth, Miakoda takes a few large steps away from Raijin before slowly setting Riko down. "Excuse me?" she says in a mildly reprimanding tone. "Is that the way you ask an adult for something?" she asks as she takes the initiative and moves her foreleg in front of her, trying to block her from going back towards the tired wolf. "Will you /please/ set me down.." she corrects while glancing back to Raijin. "Are you feeling ill?" And poor quiet Shikoba isn't even noticed!
With a disgruntled pout, Shikoba over to where the point of interest seems to be; this black wolf. Raijin? She glares at him, as if her troubles are all the fault of this poor, obviously unwell wolf.
Raijin glances up at Miakoda and gives a small nod before plopping his head down back onto the ground. "Tired, weak, ill, take your pick... Gah... I can't think straight..." His gazes switches over towards the pup who's glaring at him and he grumbles, "Direct that glare to someone who cares, pup." Ill Raijin isn't in the best of moods.
Ah, but she's down! So the lesson Miakoda attempted to make stick is promptly dismissed. Having established that Raijin's sleepy and therefore no more interesting than all her siblings back in the den, and that Miakoda's no fun, Riko sets her sights on the only other person about, bounding towards Shikoba. "What'cha doin'?"
Miakoda quirks a brow at the dark wolf, brows furrowing. He's ill which means that she needs to stay away or /she/ can become ill, right? And with three pups and Storm's five, she can't afford to be under the weather right now! And so she keeps a distance from him despite her concern. "When did you begin to feel this way?" she murmurs before furrowing her brows at his tone. Who's he speaking to? She glances behind her, and her expression lights up at the sight of her daughter, as upset as she seems to be. Her tail waves. "Hello honey."
Shikoba's eyes widen when the dark wolf actually /speaks/ to her. She takes a step back, and considers retreating to the den when... Riko comes bounding up. She blinks, eyeing the other pup. "I..." She tilts her head. What /was/ she doing again? ... Oh yes! "Lookin' for mama." Speaking of which; when her mother finally acknowledges her, Shikoba turns, tail giving another wag. "Hello!"
.
Raijin grumbles a bit as he closes his eyes, shaking his head slightly, "About... late last night... I think?" He crosses his paws over his eyes, ashamed with himself for not remembering a lot of this. "I've been laying here for most of the day..."
Riko looks at Shikoba, then at Miakoda, and finally at Raijin, feeling rather dissatisfied. Hmph. Fine, then. Tail raised with determined, stubborn cheer - She's out here to play, so she'll play, and have fun, too! Just you wait and see! - Riko trundles away from the clump of wolves, finding a closed-up flower a short distance off and pouncing it.
Miakoda moves towards Shikoba now, apparently unable to resist the cuteness of her own offspring. Tail still moving, she leans down to nuzzle her and lick her face in greeting. "What are you doing awake, hm? Are your brothers squishing you?" Grinning, she noses her and playfully nips at her chestfur before an ear turns to the flower-attacking Riko. She smirks a bit and gestures towards her with her muzzle. "Riko, don't you think perhaps Shikoba would make a better playmate than a flower?" she says. Her attention returns to Raijin afterward. "Did you eat anything? Perhaps a herd is sick.." said with a frown.
Finally, she's recieving the attention she /deserves/. Reveling in the licks and nuzzles, Shikoba doesn't even notice Riko take off. That is, until her mother speaks to her. Wait, did Riko just touch a /flower/? Shikoba's nose wrinkles. "What are'ya doing, crazy-- flowers are icky!" She shouts in alarm. What if Riko spreads the flower germs to her? Shikoba looks horrified at the thought.
Raijin shakes his head. "The herd that I got my meal from didn't look sick. Or at least I didn't notice at the time." He blinks a bit and then goes to stand up... but then remembers that his legs are going 'HAHA! NO!' at him and he just plops back down onto the ground. "Earlier yesterday... I met a group of animals... two of them were feeling like this. A cougar... and a fox I think... or was it a coyote..." He shakes his head and growls at himself. The actions of the pups are ignored, or not even heard.
"Are not!" Riko retorts to Shikoba. Just to prove it, she turns and pounces another flower, blue eyes peering over her paws in the other pup's direction. And another. The third, she chomps and chews on, just to prove it isn't icky - although that plan doesn't seem to work quite as intended, because Riko gives the poor plant a disapproving sort of look. It's not that it was /bad/-tasting... it just wasn't good, either.
Miakoda puffs up a little as she watches her daughter, looking prideful. But her moment is short-lived as her attention returns to Raijin, and her brows furrow as she watches him try to stand and fail. ... This isn't just a bellyache, is it? She glances to the den, though with the alphas asleep, there's no one really to turn to. She inhales a breath and, leaving the pups to their play, dares a few steps in his direction. But she doesn't get too close. "There were others?" she says, sounding alarmed. "Near here?"
Shikoba's eyes widen in shock and disgust. "You wanna kill ya self?" She cries, at a loss for what to do. Nobody else is doing anything, so it's apparently up to her to set things right. The pup sucks in a breath, then takes off at a full-gallop for Riko, prepared to knock the other pup away from the horrible, evil plant. Not that it'd do much now that she /ate it/, but... it's the thought that counts.
Raijin shakes his head, letting out a sigh as he closes his eyes. "No... they are a ways away from the den." That's right, Rai went away from the den without telling anyone. He lets out another long sigh and says, "Mind if... I just sleep here for the night?"
Distracted by the plant-taste in her mouth, Riko's a prime target for tackling. Shikoba's charge bowls her right over, but she does her best to take the other pup with her, attempting to turn the 'rescue' into a playful tussle. Eating the flower clearly didn't have any immediate side effects, apart from its taste.
Miakoda turns back an ear. Sleep here when sick from some...sickness he's apparently caught from others? She looks back towards the pups just in time to see Shikoba dive-bomb Riko. Kids. But at least they're healthy. To Raijin, she exhales a slow breath. "Just ... stay away from the pups," she says lowly. "If you caught this thing from other animals, you could spread it. If you start to feel worse, distance yourself from the den."
Shikoba bursts with pride as her heroics go exactly as she planned. Well, until the part where Riko starts to tussle with her. Thoughts of evil flowers are quickly washed away, and a playful grin rolls onto her muzzle. With a mock growl, she tries to pin Riko to the ground, although her attempts are clumsy at best. Hey, nobody said she had to be /good/ at this.
Raijin gives a slight nod as he passes on into his slumber... if you could call it that. He let out a grumble as he curls up into a loose ball of black fur.
Riko growls right back at Shikoba, the playful cant of her ears proving it's all in good fun. She squirms to avoid being pinned and tries to do the same to the other pup, although her success rate seems to be no better. What Riko /is/ succeeding at is liberally coating her pelt in dust.
Miakoda sighs slowly while watching the wolf curl up. She backs up again and settles herself near the den's entrance. This is worrisome. Sickness in the forest? She looks back towards the playing girls, concern on her face. "You two play nicely," she calls as she plops onto her stomach with a paw tucked under her chest. She'll watch over the two until they wear themselves out, and only then will she try to find sleep. Though with this news of sickness on her mind, she's even more restless now than before.
Shikoba has just enough skill to keep from getting pinned... at least for a little while. After some moments, the lighter furred pup finds herself on her back, Riko above her. Well that's not fair! Shikoba writhes about, kicking at the other pup. Although, this mostly just causes her to tire. She's yet to build up much in the way of stamina.
Riko wins! But she's also pretty tired by the scuffle, and shortly afterwards flops down on the dirt by Shikoba with a big wide yawn. The pup would crash right here - very nearly does, in fact, until she realizes she's not in the den. And she really /really/ doesn't want to be out here when the light comes and eats everything. No. Thus, Riko scrambles up to her feet and starts for the den, with a "C'mon!" to Shikoba.
Shikoba rolls to her belly as Riko yawns. She hasn't any particular drive to hurry into the den; for one, her mother's out here, and her mother beats the company of her two weird brothers. But on the other hand, it's still rather /scary/ out here, especially with that big black wolf over there. As Riko heads for the den, Shikoba makes up her mind and climbs to her paws, quick to trail along behind.
