Outside the Dense Undergrowth
Althaea
Gomati - rogue Wolf
--------------------
Like the day before, several hares lay piled just outside the undergrowth, however the one who caught them is no where to be seen. A trail of blood spots the ground in the direction of the river, leading up to Althaea whose cream coat bares more red than white. Using the river to help clean her coat, the faintest of whimpers sound.
The rogue wolf Gomati who is thinner than other females but she is not too thin. Slowly opens her eyes waking up from her slumber. Then slowly gets up on all fours to stretch out her body while looking around the area to see if any one is around.
Blood washing into the river, Althaea gives watch to its flow before closing her eyes and taking in a deep breath. The stretch of her sides causes pain which she holds in, releasing the breath only to become light headed. A splash is heard.
The other Female wolf's ears perk up to the sound of the splashing and without second thought Gomati becomes aware of her surroundings, nervously wondering what is going on she's quickly padding off in the direction that the splash came from.
Unaware that she fallen into the river, Althaea slowly beings to drift down its bank unconscious. Blood fading from the water, leaves little inclination as to whats happened from the shore should anyone find her afloat.
Gomati notice Althaea and jumps in the river and tries to push her close to the land trying to help save her life. Things were easier when she was on her own not having to help others. Despite her feelings about others she can not let Althaea die.
The push to land may as well not of happened, as it goes unnoticed by the she-wolf; her body hitting shore. Appearing to be lifeless, the chill of the wind upon her drenched coat is enough to spark life into Althaea in the form of a whimper. Large gashes along her exposed side and back slowly begin to bleed again.
Gomati gets out of the water again shivering with the chill in the air hitting her wet body. "Wh-what happened?" She asks with a scared tone in her voice. Not expecting a response trying to figure out what to do.
Althaea just makes out the form of the wolf beside her, shivering as she tries to push herself up from the ground. Failing of course, teeth clinched, she gives in and remains planted to the ground. The only word that escapes her lips is, "B...bear."
Gomati blinks her eyes, "Bear? Where is the bear?" She asks looking around trying to find it. Then fixes her attention back on Althaea. "Is there anything I can do?"
Althaea does not know where the bear had gone, her mind set on just escaping the beast. Nothing said for the longest time, she looks toward the undergrowth where the large black form of another lays just visible within the shadows, then it shifts deeper into the woods. "Find my..." She says going quiet to conserve her strength. Find who.. that could be anyone.
Gomati keeps her attention on Althaea. "Find your what?" She asks trying to figure out what the other wolf is trying to say to her knowing that it could be anything, but what is it Althaea wants found is uncertain. Feeling frightened, Gomati tries to keep her fears hidden.
Nothing more is said for the longest time, Althaea just looks into the open hopping to see someone of her pack, or even Brutal coming from the shadows. There was no one however, just the rogue wolf who pulled her out the river. Suppose she should be grateful. The hare she gave yesterday was an act of generosity, never did she think such kindness would be repaid like this. Looking up to Gomati she faintly smiles. "Help me, up." Her words splashed with pain as she slowly slides her limbs beneath her and pushes up.
Gomati sighs as she says, "Alright." The rogue then puts her head down to try use her muzzle and body to help Althaea get up. "How are you doing? What did you want me to find?"
Althaea head shakes once she is standing. "I'll be fine." Compared to her last attack this was nothing, but how would she explain what happened to those who care for her. The question banging around in her head, she takes a painful deep breath before taking a step forward. One step at a time, she could feel the lose of blood take its toll again, fighting to remain steady. "The hares.. did you see them by the undergrowth?" Getting to them would be her next step.
Gomati slowly follows Althaea. "Yes, I have Althaea. Do you need help getting to them or do you want to rest and let me go get them for you?" The rogue waits for Althaea's response.
Nearing the vicinity of the hares, Althaea had originally thought to get them herself, but as Gomati basically offers to do it for her she decides to accept. "Would you please." A gentle smile is given to the wolf as she proceeds forward. Slowly getting to her place of rest, 'Thaea settles next to Brutal's burly form; basically falling into him some. Why was it that when she needed him, he was never available. Looking to Gomati she watches and waits.
Gomati quickly heads over towards the undergrowth to grab a hare in her muzzle. The rogue then turns around and heads back over towards Althaea and drops it right in front of Althaea with a slight smile. "Is there anything else you need?"
Head dropped to the ground while she waits, Althaea tries to get comfortable but it turns out she cant. Grin and bare she supposes. When the hare is drop in front if her, her head lifts, "You've done enough, Gomati. Thank you." Pulling the carcass in to her, she waits a few moments before looking back up to the she-wolf. "You can have the other one if you want." Then she rips into her own.
Gomati offers Althaea a slight smile. "Thank you." She says then goes back to get the other hare and brings it back and rips into it without saying anything else for the moment.
Althaea finishes her slowly, nosing the remains to one side. The hare wasn't much but it should help some, the rest will be done with rest.
Gomati finishes her still feeling hungry. "Are you still hungry Althaea?" She asks planning on trying to hunt for some more food. Part of her is scared to leave the other wolf alone in the state that she's in.
Eyes half closed, she peers at the wolf with not much an appetite. "I'm good." Sending the rogue out to find food didn't feel right, besides from what she's seen Gomati wasn't the best of hunters anyway. Credit given nonetheless, she says, "You go ahead." Althaea watch from here, or least try.
Gomati nods to Althaea. "Alright." She says then heads off to try and find some prey without traveling too far. The rogue wants to be close in case the bear is still around.
If the bear was still around there was little anyone could do about it, least of all a lone wolf such as Gomati. Watching the rogue venture off to fill her stomach, Althaea takes this moment to try and clean her wounds but her efforts are cut short when just the motion becomes to much. Dropping flat, she wonders what sort of kill Goma will make.
(A short time later) - Enter Miakoda and BEAR
The rogue sees a hare and licks her muzzle and starts to chase after it, her attention completely on the prey animal. Which will make it easy for her to be caught off guard by anything coming from behind her.
Miakoda, as is typical for her, has wandered off from the area where the majority of the pack rests. Although now, after that pack meeting, maybe she should no longer think of the clearing that way since it's unlikely that many of them will continue spending most of their time in the clearing. She frowns slightly at the thought as she moves along the worn path, at a pace somewhere between a walk and a trot. But she hears movement ahead and stops, head lifting and ears pricking. She cannot see Gomati due to the thick vegetation but she can locate her via sound, and Mia waits for a glimpse of what's happening.
One wolf left in ruin, a second not far in hunt. What a perfect opportunity to finish what was started. Large bloody tracks lay distorted across the ground, leading away from the remains of a small body torn to pieces- a hare left behind. Concealed one again by the shadows, deep black eyes glare through the foliage of the woods searching for what got away. Claws scraps against the ground in motion then silence. The sound of one at hunt echos through the vegetation- perfect.
Gomati does not notice the bear as of yet but she picks up the scent of blood. Freezing where she is the rogue looks around the area to see where the scent is coming from not expecting to see the bear that attacked Althaea feeling her stomach reminding her that she's still hungry.
Miakoda is slower to detect it, most likely due to the distance between herself and the hidden menace. But it's the sudden stop in movement from the as-yet-unseen Gomati that puts her on edge; nothing good can cause such an abrupt stop of activity. The fur along her spine begins to lift, and then it bristles straight up as Mia's nose finally locks onto the scent of blood. Something isn't adding up here ... A quick assessment would make one think that someone was hunting, made a kill, things go quiet, smell of blood, eating of kill commences. But all the factors aren't aligned quite right and so the she-wolf stands locked in place on the path, body coiled with apprehensive tension.
The distracted lay blind to that which is a sore thumb among the shrubbery of the trees. The situation was perfect but the shadowed beast was far from reach of what would be his target. Standing tall on hind legs, he peers over the undergrowth. No longer would he be hidden, a weaponized wall easy to see against the dull surroundings of the wood. Arms held at his sides, eyes cold, empty, bend on one thing.. It is Gomati that they are fixed upon. Without so much a warning, the sound of death breaks through his lips in a fierce roar, dropping to all four and charging forth.
Gomati sees the bear and is frozen in fear for a moment. The wolf quickly turns around and starts to run off knowing that the bear can catch up with her at any moment and is expecting the worse case scenario of being killed by the predator as she's now the prey.
Oh ... my ... God. Miakoda's first reaction to the bear rising from the brush is one of open-mouthed horror. Her lower jaw quite literally unhinges from her upper and hangs there while her eyes widen and her ears fold back in terror. But then the beast decides to seek out another and as she looks ahead of the bear's charging path, she finally sees the fleeing Gomati. It's the sight of the desperately running she-wolf that kicks her back into gear and she does something impulsive; she breaks into a wild barrage of frantic barking and half-howls. But who knows if it's to attract the bear's attention or to try to call for help.
No other sound identifies a bear better than his roar, teeth flaring out in desperate attempt to end life. Claws sink into the ground with every step leaving behind the unmistakable tracks all should flee from. His voice bellows as he nears the fleeing wolf. He could taste it now; the warm blood of wolf, so much better than hare. Bursting into the open space where Gomati had been, the bears stops to the sound of another barking. Another lamb to the slaughter. Breath hard and lips dripping with saliva he huffs turning to the ruckus. What he go after her.. no. Resuming his chase, the bear scans te area for Gomati.
Gomati hears the barking and howls which causes her to stop to look back to see if the bear is still chasing her and to see who? Is making the noise both at the same time which is stupid on her part but her legs are tired and she needs to rest even though there is no time to stop. If the bear is close enough she can get hurt easily.
At first the bear does not catch sight of his prey, moving forward to break the obstruction of vegetation from his view. Nostrils flaring, Goma's scent was close but rather than charging in blind he takes cover within the shrubs making it seem like he had given up. The barking howls have giving the wolf time to run but by no means will he let her escape. It is there that the bear regains sight of his target, moving through the foliage as quietly as an adult bear can.
Meanwhile, the roars of the bear and Miakoda's barking have reached Althaea. Injured already there wasn't much that she could do to lend a paw. Laying there helpless looked to be her only option. Held held high, she scans the area looking for Gomati but finds Miakoda instead. One bark is sound in her direction as 'Thaea slowly pushes herself to all four.
Gomati sighs with relief noticing the bear is not in site. She does believe the bear has given up and puts her guard down and starts to rest some trying to catch her breathe. Forgetting about being hungry for the time being not liking being prey to the one that was chasing her.
The closer the bear gets to the now resting wolf, the more he can start to taste her flesh within his jaws. His plan had worked and now to claim the prize. Choosing the right shrubbery exit plan was not on the bears to-do list but rather barreling in swinging madly was. Doing just that, he trudges right at Gomati on all four with every intent of doing her harm. When close enough, he reaches out with one of his massive paws and swings.
Gomati is caught off guard and gets hit by the bear knocking her down with a whine and whimper. Then howls out in pain trying to get up so she can get away from the bear.
The sound of pain is music to his ears, standing tall on two legs and sounding out. Not giving the wolf much time to recover, he drops to the ground stepping to Gomati and lashing out to hold her down. Claws burrowing their way into the wolves pelt, he reaches down teeth bared with every intent of biting down on what he could to tear the poor wolf apart. Such attempts are foiled however, by the barks of the newly arrived and injured Althaea, drawing the bears attention up. Sounding out yet again, the bear tears his claws from the wolf beneath him. Time to finish what he started, but just as he is about to charge after the shawed wolf a howl echos across the woods. Than another of a different pitch. To the bear it sounded as if more had come; more than he was willing to take on anyway. Not wanting to risk it, he runs off. There will be other opportunities.
Gomati closes her eyes as she feels blood coming from her body she blinks her eyes and calls out in a tired voice. "H-hello? Who is there? Thank you for helping me who ever you are." She then waits for any responses to her questions.
Watching the bear run off, Althaea pays him no heed as she slowly trails forward to the bloodied Gomati. "Its me." Her tone soft hinting pain of her own. Looking back a moment to see where Miakoda had run off to, finding her gone; possibly to warn the pack. Pack to Goma she dips her head and softly noses. "The bear's run off." Lucky for her, 'Theaea has learned a good howl is an off pitched howl.
Gomati sighs with relief, "Th-thank you again for saving me." She says then tries to get up and winces in pain then just lays there. "I should have stayed with you and not try to find some food."
"Just repaying the favor." Not long ago, Goma had saved Althaea's life back at the river. Now it is 'Thaea whose doing the saving. Stepping back to give room for Goma to stand, finding only pain takings its place she frowns. "Its not your fault, Gomati. You didn't know this was going to happen." Dropping down to a sit, a look is given around the area. Seems the bear is good for good this time. "Looks like we're safe for now." Though remaining here wasn't a good idea. She'll let Goma rest for a while before trying to move her.
Gomati tries to get up again and once more feels the pain so she remains still. "I know it is not my fault. Maybe I should have stayed in m-my p-ack instead of leaving when I-I did." Which was hard for her to say she's glad that the pack she grew up in is far behind her. "Do you think the bear will be back?"
Althaea urges Goma to stay still. Whatever happened in her old pack was news unknown and was likely to stay that way too. Simply nodding to the regret of leaving she cant help but frown. "Don't think like that. For whatever reason you left your pack I'm sure you had good intentions. This.." She motions around. "This could happen to anyone." Just look at her. "Its possible. He likely thinks there is a pack here, so will probably wait till it moves on before returning." Its an amazement that little trick worked.
Gomati lets out a soft yawn. "I am tired running from the bear and everything. I need some sleep. You can leave me here and go where it is safe or stay here with me." She says then closes her eyes and is soon asleep.
