Thickening Forest
---------------------------------
The passing days have brought cooler winds and the occasional flurry of snow down from the pale grey skies. As the last of the leaves struggle to hold on so do the remaining tree dwellers who huddle in their hollows trying to keep warm. Held up near the bushes and a few quiet sleepers, a young she-wolf gives watch over the area, tail fidgeting in a desperate attempt to remain still. Its been days since Althaea has seen her companion, Brutal, making her ever so on alert to every sound that comes from the distant vegetation. Dropping her gaze for moments at a time, she looks to Gomati who seems to be healing nicely; glad since she'll need her strength for other things soon enough.
Gomati slowly opens her eyes as she awakens from her slumber. Noticing Althaea right away. The wolf lets out a soft yawn before saying. "Hello." To greet the other wolf.
Leaves crackle, branches bend and give as a sleek grey form slips through the undergrowth, nearly otherwise silent in it's movement. A set of miss-matched eyes glance to and fro as the figure pauses in the shade of a tall evergreen, sky-blue and brown providing a sharp contrast to one another. A huff of air is expelled as a dark nose lifts to test the air, small bursts of moisture in the cool air jetting forth with each breath. Some birds and small animals... but as far as it's nose can detect, nothing unexpected. A soft rumble emerges from it's chest, deep but otherwise norm as a decision is reached and the grey figure of a wolf steps into the clear; a set of black racing-stripes running down it's back from crown of it's head to merge just as it reaches the base of the tail and thus along the top of same-said appendage. A single black socked paw as the male steps into the grasses and puts his nose to the earth, sniffing at a small depression hidden there but otherwise completely calm, almost a routine inspection. A new kid of the block so to speak, there's something to be said for a bit of caution before traveling much further.
Scanning across the she-wolf, blue eyes meet with those of the waking female's, offering a gentle smile. "Hello Gomati." Is spoken softly before turning away to the crackling of leaves causing ears to perk in near excite. She hoped it to be Brutal, but why was he taking so long? If it were the burly wolf he'd of come forward without question, a lick across the head. This clearly not him, Althaea is made wary with a stare into the undergrowth; dark stripes emerging from the shadows lifting the young she-wolf to all four. "Someone's here." She states toward Gomati sniffing the air to separate friend from possible foe.
Gomati blinks her eyes and looks scared. Could it be the wolf that attacked her before? She starts to get up off the ground and sniffs at the air not recognizing the scent.
The male is upwind and in a lower-elevation than the two well-sheltered females and for the moment their presence seemingly escapes his attention. For the time being at least. He sniffs at the depression in the earth, bringing forth miss-matched black and white nails to paw briefly at it before pulling back with a snort and turning to glance around, his tail held high and ears perked. His eyes scan the perimeter of the clearing, noting discrepancies and the tracks of several an animal that have passed. A particular set of tracks catch his attention, and with a short trot, he moves over to sniff and examine at them, coincidentally closer to the pair hiding out in the process.
Althaea knew nearly every scent in this part of the forest and while discovering a new one wasn't exactly surprising, it wasn't all to expected either. Sure over the months strangers have come and gone leaving their mark but this was the first time she preferred it to be the pair of them and for obvious reasons. Being downwind from the crackling however, leaves the she-wolf with the scent of only her friends and family making her ever the more wary while at the same time curious. Stepping to one side as Gomati pushes herself to all four, she gives a quick look to her before turning back. What if this was just a hare and they were all worried for nothing. For a brief moment the shawed female smirks. Stepping forward, she slowly goes to investigate but not without giving silent nod for Goma to stay put.
Gomati returns the nod to Althaea understanding what she meant and remains where she is. The female is still frightened and trying her best to hide her emotions.
Candid - though not particularly recent. The shallow prints stand out from the mixture of the others in the vicinity, though annoyingly any real trace of scent has passed into obscurity due to age. He frowns - he'd seen signs of others for a few days now, though this was the first he'd actually seen one this recent. The question arises, does he continue on his path, or does he investigate the locals? For all he knows it could simply be some dogs. He snorts in distaste, and raises his head to glance about once more, pausing as a shifting of tone to one side of the clearing draws his eyes... but when it doesn't repeat itself, he dismisses it and begins heading towards the sound of distant water. Some discrete investigation is in order.
With Gomati behind her Althaea was put at a certain degree of relief but that also meant she needed to keep close eye out should the unknown sneak up from behind. Ears perked forward she listens with each step taken toward where she had heard the sound; each step slow carrying her quietly. Nearing the undergrowth, several sniffs are made to the ground which this time a scent is picked up and it brings her pause. Looking up from the ground and through the brush, she tries to spot the shadowed figure but to no avail the darkness gives nothing away. Stepping back now, she watches closely. If anything was going to come out of there she was going to see it happen.
Gomati remains where she is watching Althaea carefully. Sniffing every now and then paying close attention to make sure no one sneaks up on them keeping her guard up. Ready to howl out a warning if need be.
Luuko pauses at the edge of the clearing, glancing back over his shoulder once more to verify a clear six... then snorts. He'll have to remember this location - something's... off. He can't quite put his nose on it, but something is awry. A deliberate pause and a decision is reached. He trots on over to a nearby large tree, marks it, and then slips into the undergrowth. There may be hell to pay for that later, but he'll deal with that as it comes. For now - time to get a drink. He'll be back later to further investigate what's nagging at the back of his brain.
Althaea stands starring at the undergrowth for a time waiting, but when nothing comes from its other-side, she is somewhat disappointed. She half hoped to find someone, or something new, but she's glad the space between her and the unknown has remained empty... for now. Flicking her tail, she turns back to Gomati with a shrug. Least no one got hurt this time and that was a good thing. Moving back to her friend she settles down to her haunches a few paces away.
Gomati watches Althaea as she returns, "Did you see anything over there?" She asks. Glad that every one is safe.
Althaea head shakes. "Not sure." She saw something but she's not exactly sure what it was. A small deer perhaps? She didn't want to worry her. "Whatever it was, its gone now." For the meantime they were safe, but she cant help give a few second glance back toward the shadows of the outer clearing.
