Gomati, f. Wolf (ute guest)
Althaea, f. Wolf
Thickening Forest
Gomati is laying down on the ground not feeling well, feeling like she is about to give birth. She lets out a painful howl unable to control it as a contraction rips through her stomach.
Having been encamped for a better part of early winter, being able to finally move around with out pain or nausea has become a treat for one particular shewolf. Out looking for an easy meal, Althaea moves slowly through the underbrush looking side to side for one of the sluggish. However, her search doesn't bring her to what she hoped to find but rather a howl of pain. Coming to a stop, ears erect, she listens for it to sound again before making any attempt to head toward it.
Gomati starts to push then lets out another howl having a feeling that something wasn't right. Something she wasn't looking forward to. As pain starts up again she goes back to pushing.
Arriving shortly after the second howl, Althaea has a quick look around spotting Gomati hunched over and in more pain than she's ever seen her. "Gomati.. whats wrong?" Little did she know her friend was in the process of giving birth having never experienced or witnessed such an event before herself.
Gomati is breathing heavily. "I am having my pups! I think something is wrong though!" She pushes more and one pup finally comes out and the female wolf looks at the pup it is not moving. She licks it clean and it is then when she notices the pup did not make it she starts to whimper and she pushes again.
Somethings wrong? Althaea is confused by this but then again knowing the signs of right and wrong birthing wasn't one of her know hows - yet. Stepping in closer, she gives Gomati a closer look searching for anything that might signify what could be wrong. Finding nothing right away, she steps back the moment Goma starts to push. Its during that time that the shawled female circles around to the small lifeless body that suddenly appears. Intrigued, she drops her nose down to sniff it. Sadden that the pup indeed had not made it, she frowns. "I'm sorry..." Stepping back once more and the pushing starts all over again, she holds her breath. Was another one coming? Would it share the same fate as its sibling? She hoped that not the case.
Gomati feels the other one coming and like before the pup did not make it out alive either, noticing when she licked it clean just like the first.
Althaea is in sheer awe just by the fact that another could produce life, or in this case the opposite. It was heartbreaking to find that the second born showed not life as well; starring at its lifeless body with the hope it just needed a few more good licks to spark breath. Dropping to the ground she waits. Something good had to come out of this.
Gomati sighs and howls out again this time in sorrow and starts to push again and gives birth to the third pup and licks it clean and unfortunately it suffered the same fate as the other two. The wolf starts to whimper again she feels down and broken. she does not know how she'll go on with her life now.
One by one, each pup seemed to come without a life of its own. It was a sad feeling, not just for Gomati but for Althaea as well. This will be here in the next few months; what if her pups follow the same fate. Closing her eyes and shaking her head she tries to think positive. Eye reopen to Goma's whimper of sorrow. She didn't know what to do or even say to the shewolf. This was just terrible.
Gomati lets out another howl and blinks her eyes having thought the third one was her last pup. Not the being case it seems, she starts to push again.
Althaea continued to watch in sorrow as her friend strained. Wasn't giving birth suppose to be a blessing; a thing of joy? This didn't look to joyous to her. Then again maybe the things leading up to this was the reason for the lifeless pups. Gomati had been injured and undernourished through a better part of her pregnancy.. maybe that's the cause. Head shaking, Althaea stands in anticipation for what may be the last of Goma's pups.
Gomati whimpers not expecting the pup she is giving birth to now to live either. She feels broken and sad about whats happened to her life. Then continues to push the last of her pups out.
Where there's hope there is a chance. Moving around to meet the pup the moment it enters into the world, Althaea's eyes glow looking to Gomati for a few seconds then back to the pup. Hard to really tell if it was alive or not with all that muck covering it, but for some reason she a had a feeling this one was different.
When she finishes pushing the pup out Gomati licks it clean out of habit and a part of her thinks it is probably a waste of time as fresh tears come out of her eyes.
Althaea moves to the side to let Gomati clean her last pup. Taking a seat she waits to see if the forth was a charm. It was seem to be as well as a faint cry emits from the newborn pup just moments after it is licked clean. Ears perked to the sound, Althaea stands taking a few steps closer. Again the faint cry sounds. "Gomati, its... its alive." Relief was in her tone.
Gomati blinks her eyes when she hears the faint cry and hearing Althaea's words about it being alive. Looking at the pup and sighs with some relief. "I-I am a mother? I was afraid they were all going to be dead." She is still crying about the deaths of her other pups.
Althaea just simply smiles. "Where sadness dwells there is always happiness waiting on the other side." She says dipping her muzzle down and lightly nosing the pup. "You just have to be willing to see it through to the end." The nosing brings out a louder cry as its not from its mother. To this Althaea steps back unsure if shes hurt it unintentionally. "You have this little fellow, Gomati. Love him as you would have the others." No amount of words could bring back the others but it is what it is. She says nothing else.
Gomati looks over towards Althaea, "That is true. It is still hard having pups and having only one live. I am grateful for this one but for the others it is not right." She says sincerely, then noses her pup. "It is not fair for him. He should have the others with him."
Althaea nods slowly. Loses seemed to be a running thing these days, even years. It started to seem like she'd never go a year without seeing death. Taking a seat, her own roundness bulging over her haunches, she begins to consider a few things about her own pregnancy. If they were anything like their father, she'd have a hard time just birthing them. Letting out a sigh she watches mother and son. "If its alright.. I'd like to help." She can use all the practice she could get before its her turn to endure.
Gomati looks over towards Althaea, "It is fine with me. I would like the help." She says then looks back at her son. "I think. I will call him Wanikiya and hope he lives up to his name." She says then lets out a yawn feeling sleepy. "I am going to try and get some rest that was exhausting." She says then closes her eyes." I hope you do not go through what I did and all yours will live."
The coming times were going to be busy, not to mention a bit difficult. For each passing days becomes more a strain for Althaea and helping with a pup may come to an end sooner than later. She'd do what she could while she could however - Brutal likely being the one to tell her no. Brows raised to the name given to the pup she smiles. Its unknown if the pup would make it through the winter, but if Gomati cared for him enough he may just. "You've surely earned it." She chuckles. "I'll stay a while longer and keep watch and thanks." She hoped the same but only time can answer that one.
