Ikuna - male wolf
Maize - female coyote
~*~Waterfall Pool~*~
The waterfall roars down the cliff-face, churning the pool beneath into mist. The waters calm the further they get from the torrent, until - across from the cascade - they're still enough that tiny bits of ice have begun to form along the rocks and fallen twigs of the shore. Along with the ice, a wolf has come to the pond. He's seated by the water's edge, gaze cast upward as if he's trying to see through the mist to where the water comes from.
Maize comes actually from where the water comes, though not the direct way. it's a small path to come down from the top to the bottom, but she is exploring again. She hasn't been this way in a while. as she walks, she spies a wolf. A quick glance around shows her that it looks like only one wolf which is good. She waits a moment to be sure before approaching.
Ikuna does seem to be the only wolf here - at least at the moment. There's traces of another's scent, someone who must have been here recently given how the water tries to wash everything away. The mist, and Ikuna's own distraction, keep him from noticing Maize at first. Once he does, he rises to his feet, eyes on her and ears perked with interest - though his tail is level (if a bit crooked) behind him. "...hello."
Maize keeps an eye out just in case, "Hello there, I see you're watching the water." she does detect another one, but doesn't see one, so must have been old. She stays not too close, noticing the tail level. She doesn't want to appear threatening at all.
Ikuna tilts his head, then hehs. "I suppose I am." He smiles, giving that head a little bit of a shake as his tail-posture relaxes somewhat. "Funny how it stays the same, even after so long. Well... the same waterfall, at least. I'm sure it's different water." He nudges a small rock with one forepaw, knocking it into the water with a small splash.
Maize chuckles.. "yes, the water changes a lot, but it always looks the same. Except in some of the winters, then it's frozen, that's pretty too." she mvoes closer and sits down, now that he's relaxed. "Oh, I'm Maize." She watches the ripples in the water from where the rock fell in.
"And then there's us, who look different from fall to spring..." Ikuna muses. "We used to go sliding on the ice..." He smiles, and then it shifts to a frown. "Until it broke." He gives himself a little shake, as if to dry off from that remembered ice-water, then nods to Maize. "I'm Ikuna, of..." He stops, shakes his head. "Ikuna. Nice to meet you."
Maize smiles at the thoughts of the sliding, then giggles some.. "Cold water isn't it." she says then nods.. "It is very nice to meet you.. are.. you with a pack?" she asks carefully
Ikuna snorts. "Frigid," he says, though it's with a trace of amusement given that he isn't actually in it at the moment. As for the other question... he looks away. "I suppose not." His muzzle twitches, and he looks back to Maize. "I'm traveling with a companion, but not a pack."
Maize nods.. "Ooh, a companion, that's always good. When I did travel, I didn't travel with a companion, but I made it here alright.. would have been nice to have someone with me though." she watches the reactions though and will keep away from the pack questions.
"I hadn't planned on one," Ikuna says, and smiles. "It just sort of turned out that way." He shrugs, then tilts his head to the side. "Where have you traveled?" His tone makes it sound like simple curiosity.
Maize cocks his head.. "so you just found one then?" she asks, then ponders.. "Well, I traveled from where my dad and mom were to up to where my grandfather lived. I was kinda complelled to do it." She flicks her tail some.
Ikuna nods. "Or she found me. However you want to look at it." He smiles, then tilts his head as he listens to Maize. "There's something to be said for going back to where your family's from. But... compelled?" He frowns. "Did something happen to your parents' land?"
Maize chuckles.. "Well she must have good tastes then huh." she then nods.. "well, my uncle fox mentioned it might be the spirit of my grandfather. I don't know, I just knew I needed to come back here." she looks around.. "Well up there." she looks up to the top of the waterfall.
Ikuna smiles, giving his head a slow, bemused shake at the talk of his traveling companion. "She has her reasons, I'm sure." Whatever they actually are. His head tilts to Maize, brow furrowing a bit as he listens. "Is... uncle fox a spirit, or a family friend?" He could see it going either way!
Maize chucklees.. "Well family friend I believe. well his family and my family were friends and shared the platue. I don't know how they got to be friends, but I know they were." She ponders.. "So where are you headed for anyway?"
Ikuna nods. "Sometimes the reasons don't really matter anymore." He smiles, then hehs. "I don't entirely know where - I'm looking for some old friends. Perhaps you've seen them? A mated pair of wolves, around my age. Likely with some near-grown pups-" He smiles fondly. "-but not any other pack."
Maize ponders some.. "I'm sorry I havent'. They didn't pass by my land up there. Are you looking to meet up with them?" she asks as she twitches the tail some.. appearently he knows them well by the reaction.
Ikuna doesn't seem too surprised that Maize hasn't heard of the wolves he's seeking - he was hopeful, sure, but he wasn't actually expecting her to know. He nods. "That I am. I have a few ideas where they might have ended up, but... well, it may just come down to luck. Still, I think it's worth a try."
Maize nods.. "this is a big mountain though.. which is good, because it means that I don't have to worry about the wolf packs..." she glances up, "No offence intended, but you wolfs sometimes get a little picky aboutwho hunts in your area."
Ikuna chuckles. "None taken - I've done my share of patrols. We never minded coyotes much if they were polite and took good care of the land, but I know a lot of packs are /very/ picky... especially when there's pups." He smiles wryly. "Those same packs will likely object to /me/, as well. Lone wolves are... not always trustworthy." Or, well, near-lone wolves.
Maize nods.. "I've heard that. I have befriended a wolf, I think he's around somewhere.. From what I understand, my grandfather befriended all maner of animals. Don't know how he still hunted if he was befriending everything but oh well, I know I don't mind eating a good meal and such.
Ikuna chuckles. "It does seem like you'd run into some problems with too many friends like that. And what do you do when you eat the friend of one of your friends?" He grins crookedly, and shakes his head. "The strangest friend I ever made was a cougar, and at least we both agree about what 'food' is."
Maize nods.. "Well, I really haven't hung around with felines.. just most wolf's, foxes, and my uncle yote. I did find him that was pretty exciting, finding my own family." she flicks her tail some.
"Meeting her was..." Ikuna hesitates for a moment. "...an accident. Back when I was a pup and she was a kitten." He shrugs, then smiles. "Family is good. It's important to... well, to appreciate it while you have it." The smile turns a little sad. "It doesn't always last."
Maize nods, "I know what you mean." She doesnt' talk about the other part of the story about her own parents, but she does smiels.. "Well, I'm glad you have your friends though, they are good." she moves a little closer and sits down again. "So were you two good friends? what happened?"
Ikuna nods, a bit wistful in expression... but it passes, and he smiles. "Friends are good too." He seats himself as well. "The cougar?" he asks, and nods. "We were. But... she had family on the mountain, and I had family down here, so... it's been a while since we've seen each other. Something else it would be nice to fix." He smiles wryly. "While I'm at it with finding old friends."
Maize nods.. "finding old friends, and finding new friends is hopefully on your plan as well." Her tail flicks around some. "So YOu're in this area right now, where do you think your friends headed to?" she knows how big of an area it is around here.
New friends? Ikuna hehs. "I suppose so." He smiles, and then chuckles. "I'm not going to start intoducing myself to deer, though." He grins, then turns back to more serious thoughts. "They were thinking of seeing the desert, last I talked to them... but I don't know if they'd want to stay there." It's all... desert-y! And barren! "Other than that... well. Maybe if I retrace all our steps and go back to the start..."
Maize gives a big shudder.. "I would not recommend the desert to anyone. I grew up close enough there. It's hot, and dry and all those things." He nods.. "I'm so glad I came back to the mountain.
Ikuna laughs. "See, that's what I'd think! Dry, hot, not much of anything there... but I guess they were curious." He shrugs. "But no, I don't think they stayed there. So... that leaves retracing our steps." He smiles. "...which I think Nene'd like, anyhow." Speaking of... he rises to his feet again, and gives Maize a nod. "It was nice to meet you." With that, he turns away from both her and the flowing water, heading back into the forest.
