Scene
This is a really bad idea. A really, really bad idea. It's evening, just barely so, and Jolon is hunting. The hare has drifted dangerously close to the wolves' territory and their scent is everywhere. It makes the dog nervous. He tries to be alert for any approaching lupines, but his prey proves to be a large distraction. Almost frantically, he pounces forward and snaps his jaws around its neck. The hare goes limp. That elkhound shakes it a couple of times, pleased, the threat of wolves momentarily forgotten.
With winter over, things in the thicket have turned out to be rather blissful when it comes to food and foliage. Being near the grasslands, Halidari trudges through the nearly grown grass looking for anything easy to catch; quite hungry herself but thinking more of her little sister than anything. Nose to the ground, and tail just above the lowest of blades, she searches long and hard even with the possible threats in the area coming out to search for their own spring meals. At first she finds nothing, but in times passing, she comes across the fallen; a winters victim or maybe an abandoned hunt... she does not know.
Being around the foxes they came here to find and away from the constant stress of being in a territory where you're not wholly welcome has been good for Lykaios. Even through the winter, when they were more or less stuck here, for the fear of the journey back to Lazuli, and especially now, with life returning to the area, his mood has been lifted. As such, when he hears Jolon's approach, he doesn't pay it much mind. It has been fairly safe here, and he's not concerned. Mostly, he thinks it's probably one of his companions, and the wind is not in his favor to tell him otherwise.
Hm? Movement? Jolon notices two figures nearby. Wolves. The dog ever so carefully begins to walk back the way he came, eyes trained on the other two. He's so careful watching them that he doesn't notice the fallen stick until he steps on it. Yelping loudly and dropping his kill, he angrily kicks the branch to the side and snarls. That hurt! After a quick inspection of his forepaw, he deems that there's no harm done. Then he realizes that he just /might/ have alerted them to his presence. Maybe. Eyes wide, the dog's head snaps to look back at the wolves. Cover blown?
Looking over the kill she found, nothing seemed to be wrong with it, it didn't even have any signs of tamperment or even signs of being eatten. Stepping around, Hali pokes around it a few times before even making the attempts to claim it and call everyone over to eat. However, before she gets to far in her inspection, a snap streams through the area followed by a load yelp. Picking her head up from the fallen deer, Hali perks her ears and looks around. What was that? Coming across Lykaios first.. she watches him for a moment before turning away and to the distance, missing Jolon the first time around.
Might? The nearby dog can more or less forget about the slim chance that he might have escaped undetected, as the yelp quickly brings Lykaios to his feet, facing Jolon's direction. It doesn't take him long to spot the dog, and it brings a low growl to his throat. He remembers, all too well, how he and Halidari were received the last time they accidentally wandered too close to dog territory. It has been one of his main concerns ever since they left the forest, and now that he has finally begun to relax, one of them is here. He takes a step towards Jolon, tail raised and ears flattened.
Oh great. Yeah, big surprise, he's been seen. Sighing with frustration, Jolon looks straight at the wolf and returns his greeting, growling in return. His lips pull back a little, offering a glimpse of fangs. A smarter dog might have backed down, taken his kill and run. Not happening. This elkhound won't be intimidated by one flash of aggression. Just for a split second, his eyes dart to the female to make sure she isn't trying to sneak up behind him, but he quickly returns his attention to the threat at hand. Growling a little louder, he stands protectively over his hare. It's not much, but he wouldn't put it past a wolf to steal a mouthful.
Its not long after her return to scan the area again that she stops on the distant dog, after having noticed Lyk's sudden grabed attention. Watching him, there was something about this one that sparks her memory; she had seen him before, or was it another one that looked similar. Whatever the case, a dog is a dog and their not to be taken likely. Silent and not even thinking about taking approach, she stays near the dead deer for a moment before leaving it and heading over to her slumbering sister. Looking back over as she walked, her ears droped to the growl; her sister may be more important, but if it came to protecting Lyk, she'd be theres aswell.
Lykaios does not recognize this particular canine. He should, maybe, but he doesn't. He doesn't need to, though. The returned growl tells him all he needs to know. This may not be their land, but he won't allow one of these vile creatures to venture so near the others he has almost grown to think of as family. The only hint that Lyk may have left his overly aggressive past behind him is in the fact that he actually gives Jolon a warning rather than jumping right in. "I'm going to give you a chance to leave now. If I see you again, you might not get that." Lyk could not escape a physical conflict with this dog without some serious injuries, if he escaped it at all, but his mind isn't on that at the moment. And why should it be? He /does/ have Halidari at his back, after all.
The male wolf before him is formidable indeed; Jolon knows it would not be an easy fight. Besides, he's outnumbered. Growling with frustration, he is loathe to back down...but can't see any other choice. He's left Sketch alone for far too long already, and doesn't need a fiasco on his paws. These wolves will make a mistake sometime, and drift too close to the dogs' territory. /Then/ they'll settle this. "Your generosity brings a tear to my eye, wolf," the elkhound's tone is dripping with sarcasm. Quick as he can, he scoops his kill up before the wolf can say anything to the contrary and bolts back the way he came. The canine is positively fuming, but he takes a small comfort from the fact that they /will/ meet again in the future...and he'll make sure the wolf is alone. His ears swivel, trying to see if that mangey male has decided to try and attack him while he retreats.
Standing above the smaller form of her sister, Halidari peers over to Lyk who offers the canine a means of parley; a strange act for a wolf but then again he had nothing against their kind as she and the others did. Then shifting to Jolin her eyes narrow to his sarcastic remark; he should be glad he's been given sure generosity. Had it been her, however, no such privilege would have been given. Flicking her tail, eyes watching every move from the picking up of a kill to the look back; the females eyes remained on the dog for as long it they could still see the lanky form of his pelt and even after he turned to retreat into the shadows of the forest.
Lykaios is no more generous than the dogs were when he and Hali accidentally stumbled upon their territory. He is, in fact, tempted to snap something back, or, better yet, chase after this dog and attack. He remains standing where he is, though, still snarling even until the dog is almost out of sight. Lykaios has met exactly one friendly dog over the course of his life. Were it not for that first positive experience, this might have gone much differently. Once the dog is nearly out of sight, though, he finally turns his head to look back at Hali.
Why did it always seemed that conflict followed them whenever they went, its not like they were looking for it; not intentionally anyway. With the dog now gone, for the most part, Hali takes one look down to the pup at her paws before glance up and over to Lyk who has now turned his gaze over to her. Hali can honestly say that she didn't approve of his actions, but every wolf has his reasons right. Raising her ears, she takes one step forward shaking her head. "They are up to nothing but trouble." she tells him, hoping he has seen that. "It is obvious what they want. We must not let them get the better of us."
Little does Lykaios know that Jolon wants to find him alone. What he does know is that Hali is right. The dogs are too close for comfort and up to no good. He'll have to watch a little more closely in the coming weeks, until they return to Lazuli, in order to keep Hali's sister and the foxes safe. Turning back to fully face Halidari and taking a step in her direction, he says, "I don't think we'll have any more problems with them." He'll see to it.
Out here it was hard to believe in anything, and as much as she wanted to believe in Lykaios there was a part of her that thought otherwise. "I hope your right." she tells him. She didn't want to see him hurt one day because he wanted to keep everyone safe or because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Lykaios approaches Hali and nuzzles at her lightly. He has no such concerns, because, as always, he's a little overconfident in his abilities. He may grow out of that yet. He is still young. In the meantime, though, it allows him to keep from worrying all the time.
Halidari doesn't worry all the time, just about those she cares about... which sometimes is often. Nuzzling him back, she keeps the wolf close; he was safe with her.. everyone else was, he was no differnt right.
"We ought to return to Lazuli soon. Johari and the others should be fine, now." On the other hand, it makes no sense to rush away, to go back to living on the outskirts of the territory. They can take their time to say their goodbyes, this time.
Halidari nods to him. Home would be a welcoming sight, but to return now would be too soon. They did some all the way out here for a reason and its yet to be accomplished. "I agree, though we should say one last goodbye." Saying though would even be painful to her.. Johari was family and to leave her would add to the numbers she's lost already.
Lykaios stretches his forelegs out before lying down. "There is no need to hurry. We have been gone all winter. Another week won't hurt." Provided that they can remain vigilant, especially as the warmer weather has brought a few more dangerous creatures with it.
No need to hurry.. winter has gone, and spring has gone.. its their time away that makes her slightly more hurrying than her partner. Unlike him, she's got a rep for being gone longer than she should, and wishes not to uphold it any long than she has to. "I week shouldn't.." Hali says, "Though it may be good to return sooner than later. Afterall, if it is not our worry than it's those at home." Which reminds her of something she needs to speak with her sister about.
Lykaios nuzzles against Hali lightly and closes his eyes. He's not going to sleep, not quite yet. He keeps his ears perked to listen for anyone approaching. His eyes are closed, though, and he'll probably drift off, sooner or later.
Halidari nuzzles back, watching him like she sometimes did when he slept. laying her head down acors his shoulders, she listens too.. this placed seemed to welcomeing to others to become to relaxed.
