Lupin, female adult rogue wolf.
Hinto, male adult rogue wolf.
Smooth Plateau
Her eyes focused upon the forest, a she-wolf lies upon the plateau with her chin against the dirt edge. Lupin's ears flit occasionally, catching random noises of scratching bugs in the cracks and holes of the mountainside and birds chattering overhead. Scents of various creatures litter the area, offering reason to believe Lupin's had guests before, though each smell is becoming quite faint.. and now she sighs. She doesn't mind being alone sometimes.. she /is/ a lone wolf for a reason.. but it's not always the most exciting life in the world..
Hinto is soon to provide Lupin with some companionship. It was actually all Hinto could think about in the day or two that passed since he met her. He just couldn't forget her. So he decided to seek the plateau to the north. Perhaps to ask her why. This would be the first time Hinto has sought out a specific wolf since his mate died. So he reaches the plateau after a bit of an exhausting climb.
The predictable sounds she had been previously hearing are now becoming drowned out by a new, unfamiliar noise. What /is/ that? The wolfess stretches her body forward with her hind legs, peering over the edge of the plateau. Nothing.. and then it's much closer. Lupin glances to the side, just in time to see the male wolf making his way to the top of the plateau. She chuckles; he looks rather worn out at this point. Getting to her paws, she trots over to meet Hinto, her face wearing a pleased expression. "Well, afternoon, traveler!" she smiles, coming to a halt once decently near.
Hinto walks onto the plateau and works on catching his breath, he looks over at Lupin and smiles and takes a seat. "I mostly came to ask you a question..." Hinto says. It's an important question to him, it would explain to him why Lupin intrigues him so much. "Why do you like me so much?"
The wolfess' ears splay back slightly, her expression for a moment awkward, before letting a smile cross her muzzle. She is silent for a moment, considering her words, the same thoughtful look in her face. "Why I like you so much.. I think," she begins, "That it's because you are, I have gathered, just as stubborn as I." Course that's not /all/, but it's a fair first reason, and she offers a smile slightly twisted, amused.
Hinto thinks about that. "Because I'm stubborn?" Hinto says. Well that seem like a strange reason to like someone. Wouldn't being stubborn be more along the lines of reasons to dislike a wolf? And yet Lupin likes him. He's not sure he understands. "Is that all?"
Lupin is a very stubborn wolf. She /needs/ someone who will fight her, and keep her in check. She raises her golden eyes to the sky, as if looking for guidance for her words. "Hmmm. No.. not all," the wolfess murmurs, her focus still above. "Though I do not know how to explain it, yet." Now her topaz irises lower to alight upon Hinto, and she makes a shrugging gesture. "Though you apparently have you own reasons for coming up.. besides a question, of course." Inquisitive look.
Hinto looks a bit nervous as he looks down. "Well, after we met, I couldn't stop thinking about you." Hinto says. "Though the question was important to me, apparently all I wanted was to be with you now."
Aha. The she-wolf now raises her eyebrows in a look that reflects a flash of understanding, if not faintly tinted with amusement. Of course, she had thought it unusual that he'd climb the mountain merely to ask a simple question, so such an idea had formed in her mind, but hearing it out loud was the difference. Lupin shifts to her side, her delicate face formed into an expression of concentration as she considers the male. At last, after a full minute, she speaks. Only one word. "Why?" Both golden eyes bore into Hinto, watching him intently.
Hinto is now surprised himself. Lupin is, quite simply, the most intriguing female he's ever met. Hinto shifts his weight from leg to leg, trying to get comfortable and explain himself, realizing even now that he can't really answer that question to an exact point. He does his best, however. "I, er..." Hinto starts off, cutting himself off a bit as he tries to get a handle on it. "I don't know... you intrigue me, certainly. Something about the way you act or talk. All I know is I came to see you and I don't want to leave."
She narrows her eyes fractionally, covering part of her piercing irises. The wolfess' face is emotionless, except for a scrutinizing gaze she now lights upon the male. Then, Lupin finally expresses a gentle smile, the gaze softening. Inclining her head to the side, she asks in her formerly silvery, light voice, the scrutiny now missing from her tone. "And you consider intrigue to be reason enough to drive you to this place, and give you excuse enough to remain here?"
Hinto shakes his head. "No, I don't believe that. However, its the only explanation I can give for why I am with you I don't want to be anywhere else. For reasons I can't explain I wander far and wide, now, again for reasons I can't explain or even begin to understand, I must stand by you." Hinto explains. He almost feels like he's coming onto this female. She must be a bit frightened by this behavior. "I almost feel like a lovesick fool saying that."
Again, an unreadable expression comes to the female's face as he speaks. If Lupin is uncomfortable or intimidated by his boldness, she doesn't show it outwardly. When he finishes his last words, she lets out a quiet chuckle, her thick, gray pelt rustling as she shakes her head. "Being honest and forward may be foolish at times," she lifts an eyebrow in his direction, amusement playing across her profile. "Though in the right company, it leans in your favor. In this case, for instance." Lupin gets to her paws, her tail swaying lightly as she walks closer to him, closing the distance there was between the wolves while reaching out with her neck to touch the side of her muzzle to the male's briefly before retracting again to face him. "If you wish," she smiles, "You may stay here as long as you fancy.. with me."
Hinto feels his heart pound just a slight amount. Did she just give him... a nuzzle? What does this mean? Hinto finds himself a bit lost in the thoughts of what this physical affection, however small, entails. He takes a moment, then experiments and touches her muzzle the same way she touched his. "Thank you."
She utters a soft laugh at the way he's apparently caught off guard, her tail swishing faster as he tests her by responding in kind. Lupin takes advantage of his bewilderment by proceeding into a brisk walk, circling the male around to his other side. She pauses once meeting him shoulder to shoulder on his opposite side, eyeing him sideways curiously. "And what should I do with you, then, hm? Surely the idea of a male of my species staying in the same area with me should be interesting to other creatures.. what should I say to them, should they inquire?" A flash of a grin.
Hinto is at first absolutely unsure exactly what his relationship with Lupin should be. The wolf keeps himself from losing himself into stuttering and uncertainty. Suddenly, Hinto tries something very bold. Bold indeed. "I am your mate." Hinto says, as stoically and confident as he can.
For the first time, the female /does/ look sincerely and utterly surprised. Sure, she'd considered him forward, but she wasn't expecting /that/, exactly. After the brief expression of bewilderment that seems to have been taken directly from Hinto's face only immediately before his bold statement, Lupin shakes her head slowly, her eyes squinting into a look that bespeaks her impressed state. Then, lifting her eyes again to his face, she offers a wide smile, nosing the side of his neck, directly behind his ear. "Then it shall be as you say; I will tell them you are my mate," she speaks, the smile obvious through in her words. "Though I can't be lying to them, can I?" Her tail brushes against his, sweeping it to the side with the motion. "Then let it be so."
Hinto tries to keep from exploding. "Who says it would have to be a lie, L-Lupin?" Hinto breaks down a bit. Wait a minute. What did she say. "W-wait..." Hinto looks at Lupin, his maybe-mate. "Are you saying you're telling them I'm you're mate... and you *don't* believe it will be a lie?"
"I do not take to lying, Hinto," Lupin shifts on her paws, ears rotating as they observe their surroundings without the aid of her eyes. "Therefore, should you agree, of course.." she glances away to the distance ahead of them, licking her lips once as she considers her words, "I am entirely willing for such a statement to be.. absolutely true." The wolfess now lets her gaze wander back to the male, a patient look in her golden eyes.
Hinto can't believe what he is hearing! He's never had anyone like this since his first mate had died a long time ago. He tries to stand tall and look strong, but in reality he ends up looking downright nervous. Obviously he would care for Lupin a great deal like any mate should. It's the thought of what he could be getting into. "O-of course."
She chuckles again, leaning towards him and pressing her soft fur into his, completely disregarding his anxious expression and instead finding utter pleasure in his presence. Lupin /knows/ he can be a good mate; the way he spoke of his previous mate assures this to her. She splays her ears back, tail swaying rhymically. "I'm glad. I was.. getting very lonely." The wolfess lowers her head, letting her pinned-back ears skim his neck. "Thank you for coming up to see me."
Hinto is glad he did. He seems to have gotten a mate from a female who not too long ago he fought with for a hare. Hinto leans his head over Lupin's neck and licks her there with a smile. "I'm glad I did. It seems to have cured us both of loneliness."
Apparently so, hm? Funny how such a short time ago, Lupin had been completely comfortable all by herself, staying here indefinitely with no one at her side. And now.. suddenly, she finds herself with a male here, as if by magic, ready to stay by her side.. and his boldness only causes her to /want/ him to stay by her side that much more! The female allows a small smile to creep across her muzzle, happiness emanating from her. Only then does the realization of the darkness occur to her. Gesturing towards the forest, the wolfess inclines her head. "Shall we hunt?" She'll be happy, going alone or with her new mate.. because either way, late tonight, shall it be possible, she will be at the side of another.. the first night she doesn't feel alone.
Hinto nods. "Yes, lets go hunting." Hinto says. Suddenly his life is no longer empty. In such a short amount of time, this female managed to change his life for the better. Hinto smiles and starts loping for the forest, knowing his new mate will be with him.
