Braxton - Male Fox
Therdde - Male Duck

Braxton is moving rather swiftly now. Food is one concern, but he's also working out the bigger problems in his head. He can't expect Kaira to do well riding an alligator in her state, the way he had to get over to this side. The big problem is not just finding a way back, but also notifying Terri of the state of their daughter, who he is relieved and terrified to have found. Terrified simply because she seems seriously ill. He continues along, thinking about what he'll do.
Therdde has been back in this part of the world for several weeks now, but he has not done a great deal of traveling. Why should he, with the water ways so pleasantly swollen, and his advancing age? Still, having finally recovered from his trip here, Therdde has abandoned his home in the lake to scout the familiar areas of these parts. He is flying reasonably low, barely high enough to clear the highest of the hills, and though he notices Braxton, he does not recognize the fox, and so he has no intention of stopping.
Braxton sees the duck flying past. Birds are always such interesting creatures. Being able to fly must be so interesting. Then it sinks in. That's a bird! And it can fly! QUICKLY! He suddenly starts running after the duck. "Heeeeeeeeeeeeey!" Braxton says. "I need to talk to yooooooooou!"
The voice reaches even Therdde's less than optimal hearing, and though he is not a trusting animal, by any means, he does circle around. Only to make fun of the running predator down on the ground? Yeah, probably. "Right. Talk." Sure. "I've seen how predators talk, and I think you'll find it hard to 'talk' to me from down there." So nyah.
"No!!! I need your help, and I am willing to do an exchange!" Braxton calls out as loud as he can. "I'm in a bit of a fix, you see and I need a message delivered to someone, it's important and I'm desperate!"
An exchange? What could this fox have that Therdde could possibly need? The idea is simply laughable. Still... "Big bad foxy needs help from the duck." And, apparently, is desperate for said help. How can Therdde maximize the amount of amusement he could get from this? "Beg like a good foxy, and then I'll think about it." Like Braxton, Therdde is shouting to make certain that he is heard, but the amusement is easy to hear in his voice.
Braxton knows he has his pride, but he carries on badly he'll blow an opportunity to get help. Still, he needs to handle that. "Must I? Do you not have children of your own? Anyone you care about facing a serious illness? Please, don't make me beg, it hurts someone more than just myself!"
Therdde doubtlessly has children. That doesn't mean he knows them. "My children have probably filled the stomachs of yours." Oddly, Therdde does not seem terribly upset about the idea, if it's even remotely true, but it remains a perfect example of 'Why should I care?' The only thing he can take away from this is his own entertainment, and if Braxton refuses to give him that... "Farewell, foxy." He doesn't start to fly away, though, still circling the fox like a vulture might circle a dying animal, so by saying farewell, Therdde is really saying, 'Don't waste my time.' As though he has anything pressing to attend to.
Fine, begging, then. He really can't throw away a chance to have help. He rolls onto his back. "Please, Mr. Duck! I beg you, as a father who needs help with a severely ailing daughter far away from home, I implore you!"
"Very nice!" The amusement is back. Therdde might have expected the fox to lower himself to his belly. He might have even demanded it. Rolling onto his back, though? It's truly a beautiful sight. He cannot, however, resist screwing with the fox, a little more. "Stay, foxy!" And with that, Therdde begins to fly away. One day, his mouth and his behavior toward predators will get him in trouble, but it is not today. He flies only far enough to give him plenty of time to take to the air again, should Braxton do anything Therdde doesn't like, at which point he lands on the ground. All of that flying in circles was tiring him out and making him dizzy.
Braxton just lies there, thinking the duck left him. Tears come to his eyes. Now what will he do? Kaira needs help. Her mother needs to know he found her. And all the other problems he's had come flooding to him. Flicker's rape... Ossian is still gone, apparently looking for Inali, who has not seen him yet... and he knows he could never forgive himself if Kaira dies because she was away from home thanks to this flood! He rolls to his side and curls up, trying not to weep.
From his current position, Therrde watches Braxton for a while. If, at any point, he is swayed by Braxton's distress, he definitely does not show it. All the same, after a while, he calls out, "Tell me what message you need me to pass along. I do not have all day, foxy!" After all, somewhere on the northern side of this flood, there is another animal that must be manipulated into amusing him in exchange for him actually relaying this message.
Braxton looks up, then stands and runs over. "Please! My mate, Terri, is on the north side of the river, I need you to tell her I found Kaira, but that she is seriously ill and I cannot bring her home until either she is well or this flood ends! I'll do anything you want! Just do this for me!"
The moment Braxton begins running, Therdde launches himself into the air again. It takes him until after Braxton has finished speaking to feel safe, and then he shouts down, "I told you to stay!" This time, there is anger in his voice. "Stupid fox! Why should such stupidity be rewarded by doing as you command?!"
Braxton lowers himself again and backs away. He starts to weep again. This duck doesn't want to help him. Now he has to find *another* bird, maybe one who won't make him feel as bad as he does now. "I'm sorry!"
Were it not for the potential entertainment value still left in this, Therdde /would/ leave Braxton to find another way across. And had it not been for the fox's foolish advance, the previous begging would have been payment enough, at least from this particular fox. Anger still easily heard, he shouts, "You will owe me greatly, and you must never forget this, stupid fox!" Again, Therde does not leave. Braxton needs to acknowledge his debt, or the message will not be passed along.
Braxton shrinks back some more. "Of course. I owe you a great debt." Braxton says. He resents being called a stupid fox and treated this way, but this is a price he'll have to pay. Next time he needs to send a message, he'll keep walking if he sees this duck.
Therdde does not worry for his safety. He does not eat any more meat than what he scoops up while he is in the water. There is nothing animals can offer him on a regular basis, which, combined with his attitude, makes him a horrible choice for a messenger. Even so, he says, "I will pass on your message." And he will. Even if he thought no more amusement would come of this, he would. And still, he waits, not yet leaving.
Braxton doesn't dare move now. Apparently moving upsets the duck too much, so he stays low, nervously watching the duck for sudden movements.
Therdde hmphs as no thank you appears to be forthcoming. Stupid predators. Still, he will do as he promised he would. Flying higher into the sky, Therdde begins flying north, toward the river that separates this fox from his mate. Terri. No doubt it will take some time to find her, but Therdde is confident in his ability to do so, even with no more information that her name and that she lives north of the river.
Braxton finally gets up and heads for the den he brought Kaira to. He'll have to tell her about this.
