Bodhi gazes to the evening sky for a few moments as he pads toward the foothills silently and toughtfully, his lips twisting into a slight smile as he enjoys the somewhat cooler and more temperate temperature here compared to the desert where he has been living for a short while now
There has been no sign of the violent cougars since they entered Amaranth. Since they left with Helaku. Either they were never pursued, or Skelaghe's gamble worked, and they were not tracked through cougar territory. Either way, the late spring and early summer months have been very peaceful for Skelaghe, and she has taken full advantage of them, spending long hours grooming herself and talking with her few companions.
Braxton hears some noises outside the temporary den he has found for himself and his daughter. Perhaps they are cougars! Please, let the spirits bless him with just one thing go right. Braxton pokes his head out of the den and looks around. He has heard tell the cougars have a healer of sorts. And he desperately needs one. Braxton cautiously crawls out of the space now, searching.
Bodhi furrows his brows slightly at the different scents in the area and lets out a soft howl to announce his presence to anybody nearby, his tail wagging slowly behind him as he moves somewhat aimlessly thrue the area simply enjoying the walk and environment
This is not the first time that Skelaghe has been greeted by a vaguely familiar howl while she has been out of the den. Unlike the last time, though, this time, she simply returns it. She is starting to think of this area as her home, her territory, but it is /not/ her job to secure it from wandering wolves. Indeed, her return howl is more of a greeting than a warning, but she does not abandon her position by her den.
Braxton vocally whimpers. Two wolves. Though he likes wolves personally, chances are the wolves aren't going to be immediately friendly to him. And they're not cougars. They might not be able to help him after all. He fears even more that his daughter may die now. He figures however, that it might be wise to make himself known, lest they find him and think he is something to kill. "H... hello?!"
The chances that Skelaghe will not be immediately friendly to everyone she meets are slim. It takes quite a bit of mistreatment, and usually directed to someone other than her, before she stops being friendly. She did not stand at the familiar howl, but when she hears a very unfamiliar, and somewhat frightened, voice, she does stand, and makes her way toward that voice. She does not speak until the fox comes into sight, though, and when she does spot the fox, she stops moving and greets him politely with, "Hello there."
Braxton looks at the wolf. This is definitely not a wolf he's met before. But maybe... maybe it's a chance! "Uh..." Braxton starts off. "Are... are you a healer? Please! Please be a healer! I'm desperate!" The fox is actually pushing the envelope of what is advisable. But for the sake of his daughter, anything.
Helaku was off on his own patrol of the 'territory', keeping to the streams to avoid leaving a trail as much as possible. So many bodhis, so little time--that comprised this land. Everything rana round as if in some sort of controlled chaos since the flood, and cougar attacks. His ears remained alert as she slipped between two small boulders and listened for wards, smelled for scents.
Skelaghe is most definitely not a healer, but over the course of her travels and her learning, she has picked up a few simple tricks in stories similar to the one that brought her to these parts in the first place. Remaining where she stands, so as to avoid frightening this fox, she says, "I am not. I'm sorry." Then, with no pause whatsoever, "What's the problem?"
Braxton flops on the ground. It's all his strength to keep from crying. How could this be. If fate has to be cruel to him, let HIM be the one who suffers. His family doesn't deserve this. "My daughter was lost here during the flood. And when I found her... she was violently ill to the point of delirium... sh-she could die."
Helaku brushed his nose into the ground, closing his eyes. In his weathered mind, the flood brought more potential for conflict, which he didn't need. The things he did to other creatures in controntations was most likely very...brutal...compared to what these woodlanders were used to. He had been on his way back to the den, but another scent had caught his attention...
The only serious, life-threatening illness Skelaghe has encountered, or at least, the only life-threatening illness that has a cure, was the one that took the life of her former alpha. She doubts this is that illness, and she frowns. Most of what she knows, this father probably also knows. "I am sorry. If you have already provided her with basic care, then I cannot help you."
"You don't know any healers? No one who can help me? I don't want her to die... friend." Braxton says. "She's my youngest, and she is supposed to have a future, she even has one who could be her mate back home. And my mate would be so... destroyed if she were to die."
Bodhi pads slowly toward the voices since he finds both voices familiar to some degree, his brows furrowing deep in thought as he hears snippets from them as he gets closer. His happy mood turning somewhat more somber as his gaze turns temperarly in the direction of the cougars territory
Helaku withdrew into the shadows and works his way around. It was a wolf, yes. A male wolf at that. He breathed silently and slipped up onto a low tree branch to quietly circle around behind this newcomer. Strangers should be met with a sense of air, and above-head authority, when possible. "Headed somewhere?" he said softly to the other male, peering down at him from a tree branch.
"None that are near enough for you to reach them on time, if she truly is as bad as you say." Skelaghe knows Paoro, but she does not know Paoro that well. She has no idea of the Amaranth Shamaness's extensive knowledge of plants and their abilities some of them have to heal certain afflictions. "Are you certain, though, that you are not just underestimating you're daughter's ability to heal, given plenty of rest, food, and water?" Perhaps part of the reason Skelaghe has never felt even the slightest draw towards trying to become a healer, even though she is incredibly compassionate, is because of her strong belief in the body's ability to heal itself, combined with her belief that everything, even illness, happens for a reason.
"She is burning up... and she was hallucinating pretty badly. She thought I was the fox she was starting to love." Braxton says. "She could wander off if I weren't here, thinking something that isn't so..." Braxton is, of course, unaware that Skelaghe believes illnesses happen for a reason. He knows that Kaira CERTAINLY doesn't deserve it.
Bodhi blinks slightly and looks up toward the voice, his head cocking slightly as he notes its another wolf "hmm, it would seem wolves in this area are quite different from the rest of us" his lips quirking slightly as he circles the tree once so he can get a good sniff of his scent before nodding slightly to himself "As for where i am going, i was planning to greet Skelaghe as i'm fairly sure it was her howl and voice i heard earlier"
Helaku's ears remained stiff. "Yes, quite different," he answered. Helaku had a scent, but faint and mostly damp. Out of habit he kept himself cleaned most of the time by washing himself every day in water. He walked to the end of the branch and casually landed on the ground before Bodhi, having no qualm about heights. He had adapted to being quite...comfortable...with them. "It most likely was," he said. The scent of this wolf was unknown, yet something slightly familiar. He was sure a small part of the essence he had come across before, but it wasn't a bother. "The most important issue at this moment is that of anyone who might have followed you...anyone..."
"I am sorry that I cannot help you further." And though Skelaghe's voice is appropriately somber, she is not terribly depressed by the idea of this fox's daughter being ill. She has heard the voices of Helaku and Bodhi, but she keeps her focus on Braxton.
Braxton looks around. He must do something. "I can't give up. I refuse. I have heard tell that the cougars have a healer." Braxton says. "They may be territorial, but I must do something."
Bodhi dips his head slightly as he studies Helaku closely now that he is easier to look over "I do not think you need to worry about that since i came from the desert and i patroled our area of it before heading this way" his brows furrowing slightly as his tail sways slowly behind him "as for your worry i would have to assume that is linked to those murderous cougars who i can assure you have not even been close to the desert where i came from"
Helaku turned one side of himself to face Bodhi, the side which bore the same Ute mark Skelaghe had, though his had been scarred and scratched through by what was most likely a bear. His posture, though, was dominant and his bloody eyes remained fixed on Bodhi at all times. "I am Helaku, and Skelaghe is with me along with others. She did mention cougars instigating trouble, but did not mention the 'murderous' note."
Skelaghe has no idea that the cougar Chieftain is outside of the territory. She also doesn't know if Amaranth would be more accepting of a fox in their territory that they were of a wolf and dogs. She hopes so, though, for Braxton's sake... And here, she can offer advice. "Do not cross their border. They patrol the border regularly. Wait or one of them to come to you. It will save you both time and grief, I assure you."
Braxton nods and shivers at the thought of what he has to do. But he's a father, and he believes himself to be a good one. "Thank you. I would like to know your name. I am Braxton."
Bodhi blinks slightly as he notes the Ute marking and leans slightly forward to study it closer, seemingly not reacting to much to his dominant posture "Aah, the two of you know eachother from that far back since you carry the markings of Ute" his posture relaxing even more then his normaly casual posture as he sighs deeply before speaking "They killed my packs male alpha, thats one of the main reasons we moved away from our old densite" his gaze turning in the direction of the river for a moment "fairly good timing as well considering the river started growing shortly afterward"
"I see," he said. "That is most unfortunate...it is a shame. Perhaps finding a reasonable bear might solve that problem, that is, if bears in this region are negotiable." What an odd suggestion; just what had he been through? Helaku murmured to himself, eyeing the wolf more clearly "You must be Bodhi; she mentioned you and part of your scent is familiar. I am nearly finished with patrol. The den is up ahead."
Skelaghe gives Braxton a smile and says, "My name is Skelaghe, but I am not sure that invoking it would buy you much sympathy, if that is what you are thinking. It is a pleasure to meet you, though, Braxton, and I wish you and your daughter very well."
"I don't look for sympathy. However, I am a firm believer of heart and cooperation. I was wondering if I could trouble you to do something for a price of your own naming?" Braxton asks.
Bodhi dips his head respectfully as he exhales slowly "its a great shame yes, but sadly enough its also a part of life" his gaze surveying the area before focusing on Helaku "you would be correct, i am Bodhi at your service" his lips quirking slightly "hopefully nothing to bad was told about me, and if you lead the way i will follow"
"If it is within my power, then no payment will be necessary." She, however, will have to be the one to determine whether it is in her power, since she cannot bring herself to abandon her small group. Skelaghe remains here, patiently, all but ignoring the two male wolves she knows to be nearby.
"I only ask that... if you live in these parts... while I am seeking out this healer of the cougars... you keep an eye on this den and check on my daughter... and make sure she doesn't wander off or get hurt. "I still offer a repayment if you wish."
Skelaghe shakes her head lightly. "If I were the type of animal to try to profit from your daughter's sickness... I would no longer be able to think very highly of myself. Good luck, again, Braxton... And travel swiftly."
Braxton smiles to Skelaghe. "Thank you so much. As a father I can't even begin to express what a service you are providing. I hope that you'll find a prosperity to admire in your future." Braxton says. "Now I must get moving. The sooner I move, the sooner I can get help. I won't forget you." Braxton then takes off to the south.
Skelaghe watches Braxton for a while as he departs. Before he can get out of sight, though, she calls out after him, "Hey! What is your daughter's name?" The more she knows, the more she can set any potential fears the daughter may have at ease, hopefully.
Braxton stops and turns arouns and shouts back helpfully. "Her name is Kaira! If she seems suspicious, just mention my name and what I have asked you to do! She has learned from me the importance of heart!"
Skelaghe gives an exaggerated nod of her head, then lies down near the fox's den. She will remain here until she is certain that Kaira is sleeping well, and then she will return to her own den.
Bodhi remains by skelaghe's densite as he gazes at the sky and sings softly to nobody in particular "You were young but you were wise, You were smoke that always raised, You were snow and you were rain,You would walk without a shame" his tail swaying slowly behind him in alignment with the tune.
