Grit's long lost sister shows up at Viridian's doorstep, only to discover he'd been killed. She reminisces about him with Silvan and tries to find out what his life has been like the last year of his life.
Waterfall Ledge
================================================================================
Moving forward onto the ledge affords a beautiful view of the landscape: grasses stretching for miles, the mountains seeming to encase certain areas, and river from the lake to the south leading into a waterfall that plummets off the edge of the cliff. A watery mist hangs in the air, and sounds are drowned out by the thundering voice of the waterfall itself. The mists coat the rocks with a slickness that seems to threaten a traveler's step, and the slick moss on the rocks doesn't help. If one can avoid falling, then this place can be considered a good spot for observation or other things that require solitude.
Characters:
Wulesi
================================================================================
This slightly shy of average-sized wolf bitch has a coat of mostly brown and tan, with mottled patches of black and silver. She has a darker patch of mostly black hairs starting about halfway up her muzzle, along the ridge between her golden eyes, fanning outward in a sort of triangle most of the way aroun the ears (but not extending outside), running back between her ears and down the back and sides of her neck behind her ears. The interior of her legs and her underside (continuing back along the underside of her tail) are a lighter tan. The top and tip of her tail are almost completely black.

Silvan
================================================================================
You look over to examine Silvan, an adult male wolf of about three years. He seems fit, well fed and muscular. Grey fur covers most of his back, interupting the white fur that covers most of his lower body and legs to make a collar of the darker fur around his neck, some of the white fur intruding into the grey right behind his sholder. img.photobucket.com/albums/0603/Razorzj/loup17.jpg

A relatively higher-pitched, sharp wolf howl pierces the silence from the area of Waterfall Ledge. A brown small-medium shewolf sniffs impatiently ... she can hardly believe it, she's picked up her brother's scent, strongly imbued in the area just to the west atop a plateau -- clearly he had been there awhile -- and its only a few days old at most! Wulesi has followed the scent trail up a rocky outcropping to a waterfall, where she encounters the scent markings of a wolf pack's leaders. She notes her brother's scent is not among the leaders, but his scent does lead through the border, so he's obviously gone into the territory. As burning her curiosity and desire are to re-acquaint her long lost brother, she's sensible enough to not ignore border markings and thus she waits. She is not as religious as her brother, but she takes a moment to render a prayer to Luna that her brother is a member of the pack and not intruding in their territory.
Silvan sighs to himself as he makes his way through the late winter snowstorm, He's already moved Grit's body away from the places that the Pack stays regularly and is out looking for Friti and Cotton when he hears the howl, perking his ears and turning toward the waterfall before returning the howl. with all that's been going on he wonders if he should just turn whoever it is away, the last thing the pack needs is more drama.
Wulesi stands just outside of a markspot, tail curled under herself but wagging excitedly in harmonous synchronization with her lolling tongue. She whimpers softly in impatience, but does not put her nose one inch past the marker.
Silvan makes his way up the ridge carefully, not wanting to be the latest casualty of their slippery slopes and long falls. He pauses at the top and looks over at the female waiting at the border, "Yes?"
Wulesi crawls on her paws submissively. "I caught a familiar scent this way ... I hope I wasn't interrupting. I was wondering if there is one in your pack named Grit?"
Silvan blinks and sighs before walking a bit closer, looking down at the female before asking, "How did you know Grit?"
Wulesi smiles warmly, staying in a very submissive posture. "He's my brother, we grew up together 'til he got old enough to strike out on his own." She wags happily at the thought of reunion. "Its been years since I've seen him. I know he wouldn't forget me, though ... my name's Wulesi. I can wait here, and ... if he's in your pack ... just ask him if he knows a shewolf named Wulesi and he'll remember me!" The shewolf seems to be driving herself happier and happier in anticipation of reuniting with her brother.
Silvan sighs and shakes his head, wondering what he did to deserve this, "I hate to have to tell you, but your brother is dead... he died last night."
Wulesi visible slumps. "Wh ... wh ... what? Died ... last night?" She looks shocked. Until she'd found his scent, she'd wondered what became of him, and part of her thought he might have died ... but since picking up her scent, the thought of him having died had passed out of her mind. "Wh ... but ... ... ... how?" she asks, trembling a bit.
Silvan sighs again, "he got into a fight over the position of Second, and wouldent give up, even after he was wounded."
Wulesi whimpers. "I ... can't believe this ..... so close ..... and just last night ..." she sniffles. "I .... I haven't seen him since he left ... three years ago ...... I was wondering ...... what had become of him .... how he'd grown .... what was he like ... in the pack?"
Silvan is silent for a few moments before answering, "He was a good friend and had been a good second..."
Wulesi manages to chuckle from her sniffles. "He was a bit of a brat ... but ... I knew he loved looking after others, even as a pup he did." She's trying to be good and behave, but the little shewolf cannot help but feel very disheartened, and she crawls to Silvan's legs, licking at his paws. "I'm sorry ... I ... just can't believe this ..." she sobs.
Silvan nods and leans down to nuzzle her, he always hates to see a female cry, "I know... and I'm sorry."
Wulesi tries to suck it up. "He was a Second?" she asks. "I ... don't want to trouble you if ... you don't want to talk about him ... but ... I'd just like to know ... for me ... what he managed to accomplish ... when he was alive ..."
Silvan nods settling down to his haunches, "Yes, he had been the second for a little over a year..." he realy doesn't know what to say to her.
Wulesi looks up to him, but does not rise from her crouch. "Are .... err, were you his One?"
Silvan nods, looking down at Wulesi, "Yes, my name is SIlvan, the male one of Veridian."
Wulesi looks at Silvan, his muscles and his stance. She nuzzles a bit at his forechest. "You must be tough and strong ... Grit was top dog among us ... his brothers and sisters ... he always won and dominated. I thought, if he ever found others to join in a pack, he'd be One before long. I guess ... he never got the chance. I hope ... I hope he served you well," she woofs, finally able to stop her sobbing.
Silvan blinks a bit as she nuzzles at his chest, but doesn't say anything, hoping it makes her feel better, "He was a good second..."
Wulesi asks, "You defeated him for One?" She recalls Silvan's statement that Grit had died for the position of Second.
Silvan shrugs, eventualy saying, "Not in a fight... I took over as One when our Previous One died... Grit decided not to challenge me for it."
Wulesi backs off a step, cocking her head as she looks up at the larger male. "He ... didn't challenge you?" She looks positively puzzled at this. "Maybe you scared him," she woofs a chuckle.
Silvan shrugs, "I don't know about that, but he didn't want to fight me for it."
Wulesi shakes her head. "I was kidding, anyway ... I dunno how he woulda been scared of you ... I mean, you're big and strong, but ... Grit wouldn't have been intimidated. I guess ... I guess the reason he didn't is something only he knows, and its gone with him." She asks, "Does your pack have pups this year?"
Silvan cocks his head a bitat her assesment before nodding, "Yes, they were born last night..."
Wulesi smiles a bit. "Did the pack have pups last year?"
Silvan nods again, "Yes, we did, why?"
Wulesi woofs, "I just wanted to know that Grit got to help take part with a pack, helping bring pups in the world." Ohhh, if only she knew! "At least ... that's a good thing to accomplish, before meeting Luna. I think, however it ended, he would have been happy."
Silvan nods, saying, "He did everything he could to protect the pups..." before looking down and asking, "What do you plan to do now?"
Wulesi looks back up at Silvan again, looking a bit confused. "I ... don't know. The pack Grit whelped into, the pack I stayed with ... is no more. Cougars, four of 'em! ... killed our Ones and our Seconds and much of the rest of the pack. The rest of us scattered and fled ... we tried to stay together, but ... none of us were really good leaders. Eventually we just broke apart and went our seperate ways. I went this way, I saw this mountain from a distance and thought it might be an interesting place to look for a home, when I found Grit's scent on that plateau a few hours ago. I had no idea ... I guess I came the same way Grit did from our home ... I had no idea I was following his path. And then, when I found his scent, I ... I thought maybe ... I could join whatever pack he was with, and catch up on old times with my big brother. Now that I know he's gone ... I dunno ... and I hadn't even thought about the fact that its whelping season, and ... I know that means your pack really can't be keen on strangers ... so ..." she tries to think. She's a little anxious in her speech, but she's calmed down a lot from her earlier sobbing at least.
Silvan nods thinking a bit before saying, you can stay in our territory for the time being, but stay around the lake and dont come down the valley. I'll speak with my mate Silver about you... Grit never abandoned his family here and I know he would have wanted us to help you..."
Wulesi nods. "He loved us, but ... he could be very ... independent at times. I ... appreciate your kindness, and ... I know I can't measure up to my big brother, but ... I hope to get to know those in your pack whom he spent the last year of his life with."
Silvan nods looking back down toward the Valley, he still needs to find Friti and talk to him, He's going to have new responsibilities if he's going to take Grit's place.
Wulesi licks at the One's legs submissively, wagging her tail tucked under her before he leaves.
