This is the life. No more constant pacing of the borders, fewer worries, her children and Sisters back in the lands, and new life about to be born. And Paoro thought being a matron was the best part of her life...no, shamaness is the way to go. Retirement here we come. The creamy-hued puma is resting on the ruddy mesa stone, soaking up the last rays of sunset as she dozes lightly in the cool temperatures of late summer evenings.
If there is anyone who is going to give Paoro somethin to do, it's Chesmu. After his long heart to hearts with both Kasim and Maulisho, he's confident that he is taking the right course of action. He takes several steps along until he comes closer to Paoro. "Good evening, Shamaness Paoro." Chesmu says as he approaches. "I trust the day has gone smoothly for you?"
"Indeed it has, Chesmu. The world has begun to right itself again after so many tragedies in recent months," Paoro replies in her soft, yet commanding, voice, green eyes turning to meet the new chief's gaze. "How are you adjusting to your new role as chieftain? I'm sure it's quite different from your former life of a nomad."
"In my old life I had only myself to care for, not a care or worry in the world, but I also had no one. I'd never leave the life I have now, except in death." Chesmu replies. In other words, he likes this better than being a nomad. "I have come to speak with you, though I am sure you have gathered, since I am doing just that now."
"Of course. I am always available for consult," Paoro replies genially, offering a light smile up at the male. "Please, sit with me and share what it is you have come to speak to me about." She's certainly different from the previous shaman, her mother, Donoma.
Chesmu lies next to Paoro. Consultation is something Chesmu feels Paoro does best. Must be part of her shamanism, he reasons. At any rate, he's going to demonstrate how different he is from Ahiga right off the bat. "I found and talked to Brother Kasim. It was a most enlightening and enjoyable conversation. And I gave him a place in our tribe. He is now one of us."
"If you judge him trustworthy, then I support your decision," Paoro responds with a brief bob of the head. "I'm sure he will be a valuable ally in the case of an attack by Azriel."
And this is where Chesmu gives Paoro something to do, as if she was in the mood for doing much. "I was hoping to ask you a favor. He is quite trustworthy. I'd like for you to go and talk with him, and get to know him. He'll also need markings, if that's alright." Chesmu says. "I did this out of consideration for both Kasim and Maulisho. I could never tear them apart. Mates they must be. I did allow Kasim into the tribe on three conditions."
Paoro nods in agreement to his request. "He will receive his markings, and I'm sure you've made him aware of Maulisho's own request for solitude at the birth of her cubs. What are those conditions, if I may ask?"
"First off, he is not to be a threat to this tribe. I think we can both agree he'll readily comply. Second, he must fill a role and do his part. Third, if he does anything to hurt Maulisho, I will kill him." Chesmu says casually, and twitches his tail a bit. "And yes. I explained to him about the cubs, and he explained quite a few fascinating things about Maulisho that I feel sorrowful for."
Paoro nods solemnly in response, saying nothing at first. She glances over towards the slope, and the den that is beyond her line of vision, and then returns her gaze to the chief. "I am confident in them both. Maulisho will bring new life into the Amaranth, another generation, and it is my hope that her children will give her the inner peace she longs for."
"Inner peace." Chesmu says. "After learning about her past, that is what I hope for her the most. You have been most kind, Paoro." Chesmu finds himself thinking about what she has done for him, and he decides that her care for Maulisho was as much amongst that list as any. "I must apologize for my lack of diplomacy when we traveled together."
"As long as you have learned from your mistakes, then no apology is necessary," Paoro replies simply. "None of us are perfect. Life is a constant teacher, and we must be able to learn as we travel along its path." She blinks slowly, keeping her eyes trained on Chesmu. "You have already proven to be quite capable of a leader - if you continue to take in what life has to teach you, then perhaps you may even become great."
Chesmu smiles a little, looking down. "You give me a lot of credit. I suppose I may have earned it, but I canot be a leader alone. I depend on Ayashe and you a lot. After all, before Ayashe even chose me as Chieftain, I had never been part of a tribe. Never. Now a tribe is looking to me for protection, strength. ... Thank you."
Paoro offers another smile to Chesmu. "Did you have anything else you wished to speak to me about, Chesmu?" she purrs, her tail flitting about idly.
Moonseeker is making her way across the flat stones, tail swaying in time to her steps while a yawn escapes her. She's stayed closer to home after the talk the other night, so this means she might run into more of the group at least. Voices catch her attention and the youn feline moves onwards to search them out. It doesn't take long for her to catch sight of her mother and Chesmu and she pauses, unsure if she should move any closer as she doesn't want to bother them if there having some important talk.
"No, I don't have anything more. But I don't wish to go anywhere as of yet. I'll be sure to spend some time with Ayashe when she returns from her duties for the day." Chesmu says. Ayashe is something exciting to Chesmu.
Paoro nods to Chesmu, before the sight of motion in the near distance catches her eye. She turns to look, and focuses on one of her daughters, smiling a bit more brightly. "Hello, Moonseeker. Would you care to join us?"
Moonseeker offers a smile to her mother and Chesmu and nods while moving on closer to the pair. "Evening. Mother, Chesmu." She offers while settling down to her haunches at her mother's side. "Hope I didn't interupt anything."
"Not at all, Sister Moonseeker." Chesmu says, taking careful attention to addressing Moonseeker properly. Some of the Sisters are clearly less than ecstatic about Chesmu's place in things, or are at least lukewarm at best. Chesmu finds himself understanding them, however. After all, how could he take over where their father used to be? Ahiga must have been quite the institution in Amaranth.
"Certainly not," Paoro reaffirms in a soothingly maternal voice, purring at her daughter's presence. "I noticed your discontent the other day when Softpaws was reprimanded...did you want to talk with me on how you feel about it?"
Moonseeker watches Chesmu a few moments before a slight smile is offered to the male. She doesn't even know Chesmu so its not like she can pass judgement. Her attention turns to her mother and she ohs faintly at this and glances to her paws. A stone is pushed around a few moments before she speaks up again. "I don't know.. I just felt the need to say something because I feel that Softpaws is my friend. Specially after what happened with La.." She pauses saying her brother's name not even sure if she's allowed to say it with him being kicked out an so forth.
Chesmu looks up to Moonseeker, listening to what she is saying. LaVeaux.
His name isn't forbidden, but his presence is. Paoro offers an affectionate nuzzle to Moonseeker's forearm, reassuring her before she goes on to reply. "Your voice is always welcome. We are a community, and your thoughts are always welcome. But sometimes reprimands are necessary, to strengthen the bonds of our family - if we let someone go on criticizing our leaders, it can only end badly. She is very welcome to return, forgiven, but she must realize that respect is a key value in any family or society."
"I suppose so.. But I don't think Softpaws would ever do anything to hurt anyone here." Moonseeker offers while glancing back to her mother. "Do you think she'll come back?"
"I know that, Moonseeker. But it can still be very tiring to constantly be scolded when you're trying your best. I know it would have upset me to have the same said to me, knowing I was only trying to do what I could for my family," Paoro responds gently. "Will she come back? I think she will. But I can't say for sure just yet."
Moonseeker nods slowly and sighs a moment while her gaze drifts to the sky, catching sight of some faint stars and watches them for the moment. "I hope she comes back.. I hope she'll be alright."
From the deep shadows of the nearby brush, a single red eye flicks open upon hearing the conversation. Ah! More have arrived! LaVeaux stands up slowly, raking his claws on the smooth ground where he had been sleeping after a heavy meal. The blood still painted the monster's face and neckfur in blackish-red spots as he steps forward, taking a moment to register the scents of those he knew...and the newcomers. "Ahhh... A nice reunion of sorts," he purrs casually, his dark grey form making itself stand out as he pads forward in a relaxed manner.
"I'm sure she can take care of herself," Paoro replies. She's quite sure, as a matter of fact. But the sound of a familiar, yet not often heard voice reaches her ears, and she turns to face the source - sighting her son, the same vision that made her faint during the time of the sickness, and the last time she saw him - the first time Chesmu met him, as well. "LaVeaux..." Her voice wavers slightly before regaining its authoritative edge. "You are no longer welcome on Amaranth lands. Trespassing despite this command is a poor decision."
Chesmu is enjoying the sounds of conversation, even if they are tinged with something more unhappy. Softpaws. He doesn't want to feel unsympathetic, but she's not dead, and her exile is a temporary one. Before he can say anything to reassure Moonseeker about this, LaVeaux, a slightly familiar male to Chesmu makes his appearance and speaks. He stands up immediately and stands facing LaVeaux, putting on his best intimidation face.
Moonseeker nods to her mother and tilts her head to the side as she catches a scent. She blinks as she catches sight of her brother and her ears lower as she watches him. "Brother.." The young feline says softly while frowning. This isn't a good thing that's for sure.
He keeps his wary eye on Chesmu. "Ah, Chieftain Chesmu. We have met before." He doesn't intend to do anything at this point. "Is it of a... Softpaws you speak of?" The madman tries to offer some fake sympathy as he sits down, flicking his ear to hear his mother's quavering voice but not taking his eyes from Chesmu.
"LaVeaux, you heard me. You are no longer allowed on Amaranth lands. Leave, or else Chief Chesmu will be forced to set you on your way," Paoro responds, a bit more sternly this time. "If you wish to speak with us, you will do it away from tribelands, on neutral ground."
Chesmu keeps a very close eye on LaVeaux. He doesn't know this one very well beyond the fact he used to be Paoro's son. He's is clearly not welsome on his lands. He bares his teeth angrily, ready for anything if a problem should arise. "Be gone, or I shall remove you from my lands." Chesmu actually sounds somewhat formidable for how young he is!
Moonseeker glances to her mother and Chesmu then back to her brother as she shifts up onto her paws. "Brother.. please go.. Don't cause a problem, not now."
"Then we will discuss on neutral lands... The only laws are that of the Earth... For there are no Spirits outside of the safety of your borders." LaVeaux's ear flicks to his sister and a twisted grin spreads onto his maw to show his still-bloodied teeth.
"Head north, then, stranger. To the lake. We will follow, and discuss what you have come to discuss with us there," Paoro replies, rising to all fours and waiting for LaVeaux to begin walking before she falls into place behind him, making sure he doesn't stray beyond her sight.
Chesmu is right behind Paoro. His duty is to keep him off the territory and stop him if he does something dangerous. He is keeping a fierce eye on LaVeaux, and finds himself regretting being so careless. *Much* too farr into his territory! How could he be so negligant? "I'm watching you, one false move and you'll regret it!"
Moonseeker ears lower as LaVeaux looks towards her, her eyes narrow slightly. From what she sees here he doesn't seem to be her brother anymore. As her mother talks about following she shifts forward to follow as well to see what is going on.
All around the shore of the lake is smeared red; even a bit of it shimmering in the water. Bones of various animals scatter about the shoreline as the caws of scavenging ravens flood the secluded shore. "Perfect. Chesmu...Here, you and I are equals."
Chesmu gets a very uneasy feeling when he hears LaVeaux tell him he's reduced to his equal in this place. It sounds almost ominous to him. He has no desire to fight. However, he must leave diplomacy to Paoro. "What do you want? Make it quick!" He's not letting his guard down. Not now, not ever while he's around this male. And the setting of this meeting makes him all the more on edge. Exactly what kind of blood is this here?
Paoro is here to keep things as neutral as is possible - she's already muttering silent prayers to the spirits, particularly her patron totem, as she stands behind and to the side of Chesmu, offering him moral support by her presence. She says nothing yet, however.
Moonseeker follows along, behind her mother and very quiet about all this. Her gaze drifts over the area while a cool chill runs down her spine, nothing here looks good that's for sure. She stops at her mother's side and lifts her head, gaze resting on LaVeaux once more.
"I have news... I am simply going to inform you that your lands will longer be safe outside the borders... In fact, I have found that the fun is in the chase. After all..." He picks up an unrecognizable shard of meat and tosses it to rest in front of them. "...That is what the sport is all about. And if you leave your borders.../You/...will be my sport." The shard comes into the light enough to make out the features of a weeks-old cub.
"Your threats only reinforce the realization that you are no longer the son I once had," Paoro replies solemnly, her fur bristling as though electrified despite her relatively calm voice. "He is dead to me. And as such, I have no qualms in ordering a stranger's death for such threats on my family. You would be wise to retract your statement and never come near my home nor family again, or else face the severe consequences. You are greatly outnumbered, and neutral ground or no, your foolish words and actions have given us reason enough to redden the ground further with your own blood." She doesn't spare a glance at the piece of flesh, her green eyes trained harshly on the one-eyed male before her. Should Chesmu attack now, she wouldn't attempt to stop him.
Chesmu growls in anger. LaVeaux has made another enemy just by saying that, he growls again. "You have just announced your death wish! This is *my* tribe and I will protect it! I suggest you either go far away or prepare for your death!" He bared his teeth again. He's not just angry, he's outright pissed. He stands firm and strong. He will fight. It is his duty!
Moonseeker pulls her head back as she listions to LaVeaux, how did this happen.. Why is he acting like this? She wish she could understand why this seems to have went sour, she can't remember him acting any differently when they was growing up. She blinks as she body is tossed before them and glances dowards and looks at it wide eyed a few moments as she works on keeping herself calm before she looks back to the crazied feline. "I suggest you listion to them.. You've already caused enough problems, don't cause more for yourself and just leave." There is no emotion to her tone, she doesn't consider LaVeaux her brother anymore and if she has to she will defend her family from the likes of him.
"I have simply brought you here in warning," LaVeaux states solemnly, that disgusting smile returning. "As you can see, I have no defenses around me. I have not come for a fight... Unless you want to take one up here." He idly reaces for the body and strokes the lifeless corpse on the back with his ebon claws, watching them coldly.
"A warning is no different from a threat when uttered in such a manner," Paoro retorts, her own claws unsheathing in anger. "You have killed in cold blood - and a youth, no less. The Amaranth is likely to have youth of its own wandering the lands in the coming seasons, and I cannot let such an open threat towards them go unpunished. If I am wrong in attacking one without defenses ready, then I am prepared to have my soul condemned. But you have had ample verbal warning, and I will not stand by and let you continue to live on, destroying life. I am doing this for the son I have lost, and the future life of the Amaranth." Her words are spoken without any note of pleasure to them, but they are grave nonetheless. But even so, the mother cannot attack first, even against something that is simply the shell of her former son. "Chesmu...please." Her request goes unspoken, but it cannot be too hard to assume what she is asking for.
Chesmu snarls. "You had your warning! You had your chance to flee, boy!" Chesmu doesn't hesitate much further, he leaps away from Paoro and Moonseeker and runs straight for LaVeaux. He prays that this kid will *run* so he doesn't have to hurt him, but he *will* hurt him if he stands. That's the plan anyway.
A low growl escapes Moonseeker as LaVeaux moves forward to stroke at the body. Her fur stands on end while her tail lashes madly. Hate.. She doesn't think she ever hated someone so much before, and she can't believe the one she hates would be her own brother. A ear flicks to her mother as she hears her speak and then the words offered to Chesmu. For a few moments she only watches as Chesmu races forward and without a thought she darts forward as well to help Chesmu. Perhaps she should have waited but its to late now.
