Characters:
Chesmu - adult male cougar (Amaranth)
Nayeli - juvenile female cougar (Amaranth)
Location:
Stone Formations (Amaranth territory)
Chesmu is hard at work, keeping the Amaranth borders clear of any intrusion from the outside. His thoughts wander from his cubs to how cool it is getting to the last kill he ate. Yes, for Chesmu, life is starting to get nice and calm again.
'Calm' can be synonymous with 'boring' ... or so it would seem to Nayeli. While there is plenty to do around Amaranth, life still just doesn't seem the same since Kein and his family left. While it was easy at first to think that surely he would return, as the days lengthened into weeks, her hope that he would come back grew less and less. Now, it's more of just a dull ache in her memory, one that she's trying to distance herself from. If Kein was going to come back, he would have done it by now. But life goes on, and Nayeli isn't one to let depression rule her life. Even still... something still seems missing, and it usually manifests itself in her not-quite-enthusiastic approach to whatever task she's been assigned to. There's a lack of vibrancy that once existed in her personality.
Chesmu has noticed this change in Nayeli. It has been a cause for concern for the Chieftain. At first he thought it was Kein's departure, and he may yet still e correct in that thinking. But then there's... just Nayeli being less playful. As Chesmu reaches the end of his border patrol he does what he always does at the end of said patrol: Hurry home to check on his cubs. It's a joy he takes. But now he has two litters to watch over... those he had with Ayashe, and the two he had with Ama. This makes time stretch thin for the Chieftain. As he approaches Nayeli's location, Chesmu is reciting his speech he'll give to her, to let her know he is officially a Concerned Parent.
Daddy was never very close anyway, seemingly being far more interested in Yuma. And now that he has /more/ cubs to occupy his time with... Nayeli honestly doesn't care anymore. Her entire outlook on life has been dulled by the absence of the one excitement in her life. Kein. And so when she sees Chesmu approaching, there's no excited gleam in her eyes that her father is returning. It's just another part of a typical day. Nothing important.
Chesmu approaches Nayeli. "I need to speak with you, Nayeli." Chesmu says. "It's important that you and I have a good father-daughter moment." He lies down on the grass, intending for Nayeli to join him. "It's... I'm... worried about you."
Obediently, Nayeli gets to her paws and walks over to her father, lying down next to him. There was no formal summoning, but it's obvious from his demeanor that he doesn't wish to talk across a distance between them. "Why are you worried about me?" the young girl asks, somewhat curious. She hasn't done anything wrong, has she?
Chesmu licks Nayeli's head once, then looks down on her with love. "I love you, Nayeli. And when I come home... when I pass by on patrol... I see you, and it breaks my heart. It's like you've lost your spirit... your happiness. And it kills me inside to see you like that."
"So I'm in trouble for this?" Nayeli sighs, looking down at the ground. "Why do you think I'm not happy? I have food and a place to sleep. That should make me happy, right?" Her tone lacks any sort of conviction at all. Truth is, she's honestly not sure any more what happiness is supposed to feel like. By the definition she just stated, she /should/ be happy, shouldn't she? There's nothing to complain about, nothing lacking. Except... Kein. That spark of having him, or rather, the /lack/ of that, seems to have created a void in her life that defies any attempt to be happy.
"No!" Chesmu says. "No, no." Chesmu licks Nayeli some more to show her affection. "I'm worried about you. I know it's hard for you with Kein being away. I sent a messenger to find them to ask them to come home. I haven't recieved any reply aside from knowing that... one of Maulisho's boys got the message." Chesmu says. "My concern is you aren't happy. You aren't as playful as you used to be. I know I haven't been the best dad in the world..."
Do you really think they're going to come home, Daddy? After what you did to them? After you drove them away? Why would they ever come back? Nayeli shrugs. "I'm fine. Don't worry about me." Playful? Perhaps not. She just doesn't seem to get as much joy out of playing as she used to. With another sigh, she settles her head down on the ground, facing away from Chesmu.
Chesmu sighs. He lays his head down on the ground, sad that Nayeli feels she is fine. Because from Chesmu's perspective... "I hope they come back. I hope Maulisho will forgive me."
Forgive him, and then submit to him? In one sense, Nayeli hopes that Maulisho and her family never come back, so that way they'll always be safe from her father. "Is that all, Daddy? Can I go now... please?" She tenses her muscles, ready to get to her paws.
Of course not submit to him, but Chesmu doesn't know that's what Nayeli is thinking. "I suppose." Chesmu says glumly. He begins to feel like a failure of a father now.
With a relieved sigh, Nayeli jumps up and starts trotting off. She'll go find another secluded area to rest in... somewhere to be alone with her thoughts. Or maybe she'll just try sleeping. Time always seems to pass in a more peaceful manner when one is dead to the world.
