Characters:
Nayeli - female adolescent cougar (Amaranth)
Chesmu - male adult cougar (Amaranth chieftain)
Chandani - female adolescent cougar (Amaranth)
Yuma - male adolescent cougar (Amaranth)
Location:
Sprawling Mesa (Amaranth)
Scene:
Her mind is full and her heart is heavy. That would more or less accurately describe Nayeli's current condition as she pads away from the tree, leaving Kein alone to his thoughts. The question foremost in her mind at present is 'What happens now?', and she guesses that the same question is being asked by Kein as well. Either way, she knows that her father is probably getting impatient as he waits for her, so she doesn't waste any time starting across the mesa on her way to the well where she imagines he'll probably be waiting for her.
Chesmu sits at the Mesa. He's not impatient. He was actually sure Nayeli would have spent a little more time around Kein before coming to see him. As it is, though, he is now waiting for her at the base of the mesa with a very fresh kill, in case Nayeli gets hungry or is hungry during his talk with her. He has one thing on his mind, and that is fixing matters and making things right.
Nayeli blinks in semi-surprise as she notices her father. Okay, so he's not quite where she was expecting, but she doesn't slow down and alters her course slightly to approach him. Her eyes flick over the prey corpse, then back to her father. Despite her slight hunger, she's already decided to wait on eating until this conversation is finished. The last thing she needs right now is a distraction. Her mind is already a jumbled mess as it is, with her whole world being turned upside-down in the past hour or two.
Chesmu watches Nayeli approach and begins reciting what he'll say, discarding just about every possibility before deciding to just do what he can with himself in this discussion. He's hoping he'll say something Nayeli will readily agree to. "Nayeli, thanks for coming to speak with me."
"Of course I'd come, Daddy." Even though she's an adolescent, and even though she's been at quite a distance to her father for quite a while now, she never did feel any desire or need to call Chesmu by anything other than the endearing title she's always had for him ever since she was a young cub and learning how to speak for the first time. Daddy.
Chesmu nods. "Now, I understand you are angry at me about what happened." Chesmu says. "That is part of what I want to talk to you about, because I wish to work something out and try to get him back in here as soon as possible. I'm also hoping to discuss the future with you, including asking for your help in making things right with Maulisho." Chesmu nods to the corpse. "If you're hungry, go ahead and eat."
Chandani starts to make her way towards the Mesa looking for Nayeli. When she sees her sister with Chesmu the adolescent waits for the time being to see what is going on not ready to say anything at the moment.
Nayeli gives a small shake of the head to her father's offer of a meal. She'll eat later. Her response is a carefully neutral, "How do you want me to help?" She wonders if her father would still want Kein 'back in here as soon as possible' if he knew everything that she heard from Kein. And his mother too, of course.
Chesmu thinks. "That's my problem, I know I'm probably going to need your help, but I don't know how, yet." Chesmu says. "If even to help me ask Maulisho for forgiveness. Maybe someone to vouch for me." Chesmu clears his throat. "I'm still hoping she'll punish me, but definitely forgive."
Chandani blinks her eyes as she makes her way closer towards Nayeli still remaining silent just listening to the conversation unable to come up with anything to say.
If only you knew how much she's planning on punishing you. But Nayeli suddenly realizes that Kein's mother might not just plan on removing Chesmu as the chieftain, but.. /banishing/ him! The thought that she might never get to see her father again suddenly strikes her hard. "Why.." she begins, trying to collect her thoughts, "..did you want to talk to me, then?"
Chesmu sighs. "Because I'm worried you think I might be... bad." Chesmu says. "I want to... explain myself, assure you I'm not evil and that I just did an evil thing that I regret deeply."
Chandani sits down on the ground she has been trying to get her thoughts together as to what she really thinks about her father and what he did. She has thought that Chesmu was evil. A part off her also feels bad about thinking things like that about her own father and she is fine just listening until she finally comes up with something to say.
"You don't need to explain, Daddy... I was there when you explained yourself to Kein, remember?" She pads forward until she's close enough to give Chesmu a quick nuzzle against his neck, a show of affection that's a rare thing for her to give her father. "I don't want you to think that I don't love you because of what you did." Or because I have Kein now...
Chesmu nuzzles Nayeli, then looks her in the eyes. "Nayeli, you're my daughter... and because you're my daughter, I think I should tell you something I didn't tell Kein." Chesmu says. "I'm afraid. I'm downright terrified of the future. I'm less angry at Kein and more worried about him. But what I'm truly afraid of is... what Maulisho's judgment of me may be. You know how you felt when Kein was angry at you and left... what if you'd never be friends again. That's what I'm afraid of. I'm also fearful that I haven't been a good father."
Nayeli turns her head at the sound of the voice and gives a warm smile toward her sister. "Hi, Chandani. We were just talking about what might happen, now that Kein and his family have returned." It's what constitutes the local breaking news, anyways. She turns to look back at her father, and swallows hard. "I /had/ thought, for a long time, too... thought that we'd never be friends again. I didn't think I would even ever /see/ him again."
Chesmu nuzzles Nayeli and fights back tears a bit. "When he spoke of challenging me, it wasn't me being angry that he'd threaten me as he's do something likely to get him hurt for something as stupid as being Chieftain." Chesmu says. "When your mother first asked me to be Chieftain. I almost didn't accept her offer. I had gone most my life desiring to be alone, and now I don't want that." Chesmu looks down. "I want family, and I have it. If I am somehow forced to leave... you might never see your father again. I'd beg Ama to go with me. The one mate I have that loves me, and our cubs." Then Chesmu hears Chandani appear. He looks over and smiles to Chandani. "Greetings, Chandani!"
Chandani turns to face her sister, "Kein is back? I need to see him soon." Then turns to face Chesmu hearing his words she turns to face the chieftain. "Hi daddy."
Wow. Either her father is very good at guessing, or else he must have been listening in on their earlier discussion up in the tree. No... he probably just guessed what Maulisho was planning on doing. But he brings up a good point, and one that Nayeli still isn't sure how to answer. Will she have to choose between staying with Kein, and staying with her family? To take her mind off of that thought, she turns back to her sister and nods. "Yep, he's back, but..." She sighs. "You won't be able to see him." She gives a meaningful glance at her father.
Chesmu shakes his head. "No, I told you, you're free to see him, just he can't enter the territory." Chesmu says, "I only sent him out because he said things that I, as Chieftain, can't allow."
Chandani blinks her eyes a little. "What is going on? What did he say?" She asks appearing to be confused.
Nayeli is tempted to tell Chandani, at least later on, /all/ of what Kein said, but she decides that some conversations should be kept secret... at least for now. And so instead of verbally answering, she looks from Chandani back to her father, passing along the invitation for him to explain to her sister. It'll be interesting to hear his own interpretation of what all has happened. She's pretty sure she has the general idea, but more clarification wouldn't be a bad thing. Especially with the direction things seem to be heading toward, anyway.
After satisfying his thirst at the well, Yuma begins to make his way east, studying the landscape as black basalt gives way to flat red stone. Since the area is so barren, it does not take him long to spot the shapes of several figures in the distance... most likely members of his tribe, but after his encounter with Topohka last night, he doesn't rule out other possibilities until the familiar voices of his family drift into hearing range. He approaches them at a casual pace, unaware that, though they may spot him from a distance, they might not recognize him right away. The young male has been gone for the last few weeks, and in his absence he has undergone a bit of a growth spurt.
Chesmu looks over at Chandani. "I overheard him talking of challenging me. Then he continued on a course of mistaken ideas about who I am, as if Iwere some evil Chieftain who has and will go out of his way to harm you, my daughters, and unconvinced about my sorrow. His talk was too dangerous, I couldn't allow him to stay lest he cause trouble. I want this meeting with Maulisho to come peacefully and I don't see his talk or actions bringing about a peaceful solution to this problem. I admire him standing for his mother, but there are better ways."
Chandani listens intently to her father's words. Then turns to face Nayeli to see her reaction to what the chieftain just said without saying another word for the time being unsure of what to say.
Nayeli remembers hearing Maulisho's strong reaction when the older cougaress found out what Chesmu had pronounced upon her son. Would Kein really leave Amaranth lands? Or would he stay with his family until the confrontation? She doesn't spot Yuma's approach yet, and so her gaze remains on her father. "How long are you going to keep him banished? I mean.. he /is/ a member of Amaranth, isn't he?" A potentially dangerous question.
As he draws closer, Yuma begins to make out the conversation, picking out the voices of his father and two of his sisters. The serious tones cause his ears to flick uncertainly, the slight grin fading from his muzzle. Trouble within the tribe? Within another moment, the male draws up beside Chandani, butting his sister affectionately before he settles down on his haunches. He calmly takes note of their expressions before looking questioningly at Chesmu.
Chesmu smiles. "That depends on him, not me. He needs to stop being hateful. However, I want to work with you and him to assure he gets in very soon." Chesmu says. "I don't want to keep him 'banished' as you put it for very long." Whatever danger Nayeli may have felt was in the question was not even considered by Chesmu. He definitely isn't about to banish his own daughter, if that is her thinking. "Nayeli... Chandani..." Then he sees Yuma. "Yuma... Your father made a terrible mistake and hurt his closest friend. It is his desire to do whatever it takes, short of even ending his life or leaving the tribe forever to fix it."
Chandani lets out a soft sigh her thoughts are going in different directions. Then when she hears Chesmu mention Yuma's name the adolescent turns to face her brother. "Hi Yuma." The female says in greeting. While hinking she is going to need to talk with Nayeli later on in private.
Nayeli greets her brother with a warm "Hey" as well, though perhaps a bit more subdued than usual. If Kein were to successfully take Chesmu's place as chieftain, then that means that any dreams that her own brother might have in that regard... would be gone.
Yuma does not trouble to ask which cougar is being spoken of; there are only a few possibilities, after all. His brow creases slightly as he absorbs his father's words, trying to divine the meaning behind them. Finally he says, "Leave the tribe? Who would make you do that?"
Chesmu shakes his head. "No one. No one is doing it." Chesmu is unaware of Maulisho's conversation with Kein and Nayeli. "If I can help it, I'll be your dear old dad and protector as Chieftain for as long as I am able." "And even if I weren't to be Chieftain anymore, I'd try to stay here because you're my offspring, and though I wasn't the best father, I want to be with you and see... grandchildren."
Chandani keeping her attention on Yuma trying to think off something to say. She does not really feel too much like talking at the moment.
No one is trying to replace him? Apparently Chesmu really didn't hear anything else, confirming Nayeli's earlier conclusion. She bites her tongue to keep from saying anything incriminating.
Yuma reacts to the word 'grandchildren' by flattening his ears and averting his eyes, looking thoroughly uncomfortable for some reason. "Erhm. Yeah." After a few seconds he looks back toward Chesmu and asks, "So you don't think it'll come to fighting, then?"
Chesmu shakes his head. "I'll make sure it doesn't. I'll do anything Maulisho asks me... except stand down as Chieftain." Chesmu says. "Yuma, do you forgive your father?"
Yuma blinks, falling silent as his father puts him on the spot. Not knowing the specifics of the situation -- only that there is some sort of conflict between Chesmu and Maulisho, and that her son Kein seems to be involved now as well -- he feels uncomfortable making a judgment. "I don't care what you did," he says at last. "And you don't need my forgiveness. I just don't want you to get hurt."
This is not good at all. Her father is already adamantly declaring that he won't stand down, and he doesn't even know yet that that's precisely what Maulisho and Kein are going to try and make him do! Nayeli flattens her ears a little at the thought, though she does raise her eyebrows slightly at Chesmu's unexpected request for forgiveness from Yuma.
Chesmu then turns to Nayeli and does the same thing. "Can you forgive me, Nayeli?" Chesmu says. He needs the forgiveness and support of his offspring, or else he feels he might not do very well during the meeting. He's definitely not thinking it'd be a confrontation.
Yuma falls silent as his father's attention turns to Nayeli, though it does occur to him that he might get a clearer idea of what is going on, if he can find a chance to speak with her alone. If not clearer, at least from a different angle.
"Of course I forgive you, Daddy." Granted, Nayeli also doesn't know the entirety of what happened between her father and Maulisho, and granted, she hasn't had to live with the trauma of it, but even still. Forgiveness is something that should always be given, no?
Chesmu nuzzles them, first Yuma, then Nayeli. "Thank you." Chesmu says. "You two will stay by my side through this. right?"
Yuma nods after returning Chesmu's nuzzle, now glad he decided to come home.
Chandani has been listening to the conversation that has been going on around her while remaining silent.
Chesmu finally turns to Chandani. "Do you forgive your father, Chandani?" Chesmu says, "And would you be willing to stand by me during this?"
Chandani turns to face her father and the only thing she can think of to say is. "I forgive you." But as for if she really does forgive him she does not really know herself. It is so hard but it seems like that is the best thing to say under the circumstances.
Chesmu again nuzzles his offspring, first Yuma, then Nayeli, then Chandani. "I need to rest. Everything's been so stressful and I'll need to regain my composure for tonight's border patrol." With that, the Chieftain heads for the well.
