Location: Woodland Clearing
================================================================================
The forest finally breaks into a silent, serene clearing. A wide circle of trees is what forms the perimeter of this spot, the short grasses and few flowers that are in the clearing itself providing a bit of nice grazing. The land is mostly flat and so it makes for a somewhat exposed place for smaller or less well-defended animals to be frequenting, particularly because of the high trees around - predators could be lurking in the branches. Despite the potentially sinister value this clearing has, it maintains an almost warm sense about it.. almost like a home.
Characters:
Tix
Takata
The aging Vixen was yawning as early morning hti and she was piling her way out of the den her and her mate shared. She wasn't looking about but her ears were panning around listening for signs of trouble as she slowly sniffed about and padded over to a puddle to grab a drink of water, colored leafs falling about her as she does so. It was getting closer to closer to winter and the closer it go the more she grew worried. She hated winter, it was a time of struggle and this year would be no different.
Already awake and standing out in the glistening dew-coated grass, the young doe was immersed in grazing on the fresh field, stocking up for the winter ahead. Old enough to not have an adult's presence, the oddity of the whitetail was that there was no herd nearby for safety. Tix's ears twitched around repeatedly as she each time leant her head down to munch on the grass, shortly followed by her head raising, dark eyes darting around the clearing for signs of danger. With the red, orange and golden leaves falling around her, she barely pays any attention to the fox, thinking of her nothing more than another leaf fallen down near a puddle.
Takata doesn’t actually notice the deer until very sadly she is right next to it. She was busy sniffing the ground for mice signs and then bumped into a huge leg and at first she thought it might be a wolf and so she jumps back ready to run then blinks as she spys something she hasn’t spied in a long time. A deer and she tilts her head slowly. It seemed deer tried to skip this part of the woods thanks to the high wolf population.. and eyt here one was.... what a strange thing to see. "Hi.." she offers with a blink.
Tix doesn't seem to notice the vixen either, too busy nosing the odd leaf out of the way of her grazing. When the bump does come, what a shock! The doe's tail, patched white, flies up and with a single bound the adolescent female bounces away a few feet. She instantly stands alert on all fours, tailed raised high, ears perked and eyes wide. She at first blinks at the mass of leaves which had bumped into her, realizing instead that it was actually fur! "Ah.. uh.. Hello." Tix replies, her tone rather gentle for someone so nervous.
Takata blinks at the calmed tone she hears. She is definitely not use to prey species being calm around her even if they did tower over her. The deer could notice as she focused n the vixen this ones orange pelt was blazing with health and yet she was missing her right ear it torn to shreds and completely useless, also another thing her muzzle had gray hairs starting to grow betraying her rapidly arriving elder hood to the deer.
Tix tilts her head aside slightly, examining the smaller species. The sign of damage to the ear could have come from another fox, if anything, so why worry? The doe raises her head and looks around again, her black nose twitching with the scents. No danger. "Are you well? You look hurt.." The long legs carry the female back across to the spot she had previously grazed upon. Rather than carry on eating, she lowers herself down amongst the wet grass and lays down beside the fox instead, listening intently.
Takata seems a bit bothered by the action of the deer moving over and laying down. She was showing trust in a creature she didn't know, even if she was huge she was just asking for her neck to get torn at the height advantage now gone. If takata wanted to she could have deer at this moment, but the fact she did do this spooked Takata. What was wrong with this creature? Was she sick? was that why she had no herd around her? and what was with the concern for the vixen. slowly she sits down letting any thought of having deer meat fly away as she shook her head. "If your meaning my ear that was inflicted by wolves a few seasons back.." She says shaking her head a little. "So.. the bigger question is who are you and why you wandering all alone little deer?"
Tix shakes her head as a fallen leaf lands on her nose, knocking it off onto the soft grass she was laying upon. The spots of fawn hood are near-enough gone now, hidden with the graying winter pelt setting in. "Wolves? There are wolves here?" From the clearly panicking tone, there is no doubt that the female is speaking with concern. Her head raises again and she inhales the air. Still no danger. "Maybe I shouldn't get too comfortable.." And so the doe pulls herself back up again on graceful legs. "My name is Tix, lady fox. I've been alone ever since I was old enough for my mother to return to the herd we live in. The last winter was my first and she didn't survive through the spring once she was ill. Luckily, I was old enough to live on the foliage alone." The young doe flicks her tail downwards, clearly calmed. "Tell me, why are you here, lady fox? Do you live here?"
Takata blinks watching the deer slip back into alarm. "Ye..yeah there are two packs of wolves about here, though one lives up in the mountains, the other lived around here somewhere but I haven't seen them for a while.. i think they went off wandering, there are also some stray loner wolves about." She says watching the deer. "This forest has a high concentration of predators, so be careful young one." She says watching the deer stand back up and smiles. "Well Tix it is nice to meet you, I am Takata." As she hears the story she blinks seeing one flaw in the story. "Why aren't you with your herd then?" she asks couriously.
Tix blinks in alarm at the mention of two packs. And lone wolves? Maybe settling down here wasn't such a good idea after all. Right now, the undergrowth looks much more comfortable. "I shall be careful, ma'am." Formality also seemed to play a large part in the young whitetail's upbringing. "A pleasure, Takata." She lowers her head in a courteous bow, before swiftly raising it for another scan of the area. "I do not know the way to my herd. The does leave when they give birth before returning and my mother never told me. I have never even caught the scent of another deer here, so I assume they are very far away." Tix breathes out slowly and flattens her ears. "I am happy here though, even if I have not been here very long. I've met no danger and I'm sure that the forests here will provide safe comfort for the coming months. Maybe when I am older, I will leave in search of my herd. Or they might come here!"
Takata blinks and grins. She is quite comfortable with physical contact and so when the dear bows her head she can't help but give the does cheek a lick of affection. She doesn't know this deer much but she already likes her. A alert and big creature which held no threat of trying to eat her. She then nodded at this information and her continuation of hope about the herd coming here. "Yeah they might come here..." She said neutrally not wishing to crush the poor lost does dreams. She then remembers the questions he didn't answer before. "As for where i live... i live almost right here.
Tix seems surprised to receive the affectionate greeting but regardless she returns the smile. "Maybe even better, a lone stag might come along. Then we could start a herd of our own!" Any teenager's dream; finding the perfect guy. The cold winds rustle through the foliage and the wet clinging to Tix's thicker coat causes her to shiver a little. The sun isn't completely up set, so she'll have to wait to dry off proper. "Right here? In this clearing? Do you live alone too?"
Takata grins as she hears the deer’s dreams of finding the perfect guy and shakes her head. "Ah you youngins and your dreams." She says with a chuckle, then when she questions about the clearing she actually points over to three trees which form a rink. "My dens in the middle of that ring of tree's actually, and no I live with m mate." She says then gives a grin. "Her name is Inali." She then waits for the shocked face. Mate and her.. yep this vixen was a strange creature who made a mate out of another female.
Tix seems quite happy at having such a dream. She even prances in a circle with the delighted thought of maybe not spending her entire life as a solitary target for dinner. When she finishes her circuit, she stops back where she originally stood and peers off into the ring of trees pointed out. "Inali is a pretty name. I bet she's really nice." There actually is no shock. Odd? No.. From the simple interaction with others of her species, homosexuality is something which isn't considered abnormal in the doe's eyes. "I always thought that if you're happy with someone, others shouldn't think badly of you for it. I suppose that's why I'm still here!" Not only that though. In the back of Tix's mind, she knows that there is little chance of survival if she goes out in search of her herd; predators and hunters alike would be hunting deer just like her.
Takata can't help but smile as the first comment is Inali is a nice name. "I..i thought so too, she sweet on the inside.." She admits not mentioning the fact she’s kinda bitter on the outside. The fact the doe doesn't recoil in surprise makes her murr happily as slowly she lays down. "I see it that way too, ever since that Vixen stumbled into my life." she says then sighs a bit looking up. "I bet you will find someone some day dear." She means that in a term of endearment and not just saying deer instead of her name. "Life might be rough for you here sometimes but if ya stick around here the wolves tend not to wonder through this clearing too often." She says with a assured nod.
Tix nods and with the comfort of knowing wolves don't pass through the area too often, she once again drops down into the wet grass, scattering some of the smaller leaves around as she lays. "I never expected life to be easy, Ma'am. I just hope that the wolves are not hungry if we should cross paths. Are there any other predators around here?" Feeling much safer now in the presence of the vixen, the doe occasionally reaches down, nosing aside a wet leaf and munching down on a few odd blades of grass.
She watches this and nods her head. "Well of course hun, there are bears, and the odd cougars come down from the mountains, but that's all i can really think of threatening you." She says blinking a bit. "I haven't seen humans in ages so i wouldn't worry about them." She says "also of course there are foxes everywhere." She says with a grin.
Tix pauses in her munching to give a yawn and shake her head free of an irritating tickle on one of her ears. "I've heard of bears, but not 'cougars'. What are they? What are mountains?" Not completely educated but willing to learn, Tix listens intently to the vixen, her focus mainly on the smaller creature. "And if all foxes are as sweet as you, Ma'am, I don't think I should have a problem with them!"
Takata smiles as she asks these questions. "Well cougars are cats, if you ever seen a house cat then imagine that only larger then a wolf, they are dangerous things you need to steer clear of. As for mountains well those are the tings you see to the south, the huge rocky things that seem to touch he sky." She then blushes at that comment about her being sweet. Ah it was time for a lesson, and she would not disappoint suddenly the vixen in a flash shot towards the deer and suddenly she could feel teeth pressing at her throat as the jaws wrapped around her large neck. Takata stayed there for a minute but never bared down at all only letting pressure be felt by the deer. She kept like this letting the deer know if she struggled she might just injure herself.
Tix nods as she is taught on the creatures known as cougars and she glances southbound to the peaks just visible. She was curious to examine that place sometime, but if there is more dangers in those mountains, perhaps she would be safer here. Or not, as it would seem as the sudden actions of the vixen had the doe laying at Takata's mercy. "I'm sorry to have offended, Ma'am. I did honestly think you were a lovely species!" Rather than keeping still though, the doe's ears lift high, as does her tail. In one swift movement the doe rises from her laying position, attempting to drag the fox up with her. If the vixen hadn't already released, the doe swings herself up onto her haunches and twists, making further attempt to shake Takata off without doing much harm.
Takata didn't actually have any hold on the deer so as she gets up and swimgs free the vixen simply falls over. As the deer might be prepared to run t this moment she would probably hear Takata starting to giggle to herself on the ground rather loudly. She had intended no harm and hopefully had inflicted none as she layed on the ground slowly trying to get to her feet. "Sorry I couldn't resist." She calls to the deer. "Just wanted to show you that trusting foxes is a bad thing to do, though honestly I was just meaning it in a playful manner." She says realizing that she might have just lost a friend with hat action no matter how playfully she had intended it to be.
Tix pauses at the giggle and warily eyes the vixen. To trust or not to trust? Her body freezes up and she prances nervously on the spot, unsure whether to take it as just a warning, joke or potentially a new risk. "I've never experienced playing like that. I.. uh.. Never actually did play before. Is all fun so violent?" But lesson learnt; don't trust a fox. Seemingly true to the stereotype that word passes around, foxes did indeed seem to be crafty and potentially dangerous. Refusing to settle down again, Tix remains standing on alert, ready to bolt at a moment's notice.
Takata slowly sits herself down and smiles gently up at her. "Noo noo, if you like we can actually play, that was really more of me just showing you not all foxes are as sweet as me, most if you just lay next to them would rather bite into your neck and have a weeks worth of meat." She says, she then softly smiles. "You can relax Tix, honestly if I had wanted you as a meal I wouldn't have given you that chance to runa way and would have pulled that move much much earlier." She says nodding her head a bit. whether the deer trusts her on this fact or not is up to the deer as she then gives off a little yawn. "Heck even i don't trust most foxes.."
Tix shudders at the thought and clearly shows her preference with standing now that she realises what a great feast she'd make. "In that case I have little courage in staying here. I fear that I won't last a week." Her tail slowly drops back down and her ears hang backwards. "Is there such little trust amongst species? Wouldn't it be better to co-operate in times like these? Lack of food, competition, predators.."
Takata sighs a bit as she looks over the deer. "I didn't mean to spook you that badly, it was a poor choice of representation that has cause me to loose your trust i see." She says frowning a bit. "honestly most of the foxes i know around here wouldn't think of doing such a thing, but I just wanted to show you that trusting every fox just on the judgement of how i or any other fox treats you is a bad way to go.," She says offering a weak smile. "The foxes around here tend to on the whole be trustworthy i just know allot of foxes out there who i wouldn't trust. I..i just don't wana see ya get hurt with the knowledge that you trusted another fox on the basis of me.." She says looking at the grass sighing. "The foxes, i trust around here.. I can give you there names.. Braxton is a fox that is a bit odd but sweet and helpful to nearly any species he doesn't eat on a regular basis, heck I once saw him get a alligator to ferry him across water, another would be harper hes a noble fox who lives near here and since your bigger then him i know he wouldn't try anything with you, the there Ossian son of baxton hes as sweet as his father." She rambles off staring at the ground. She wasn't even sure the deer was still here not daring to look up.
Tix hadn't left. She still remained standing, wary for good reason, but not yet had she fled. "I suppose it is fault of mine that I should be so trusting. The world is more dangerous than I know, I guess.." She too, sighs, but tries to avoid letting her guard down again. She continues to listen to Takata's list of names, each meaning nothing to her. Perhaps in future, she would meet them. "And what of others like me? Are there any peaceful creatures living here? Other deer maybe?"
Takata blinks and shrugs a little at this. "There are tons of other pure plant eaters about, as for deer, I have never met any." She admits looking up. " Just look around and you will find peaceful creatures." She says then sighs gently looking at the dear. "I don't suppose we might be able to be friends might we?" she asks with a weak smile.
Tix seems saddened by the mention of other deer being lacking. Yet, there is some hope. Perhaps she might be accepted amongst other grazing animals like herself for safety reasons. Regardless, staying along with mentions of wolves, cougar and bears is enough to give her cause not to sleep tonight. "I'm sorry for judging you so fast, Ma'am. I would be honored if we were friends. You would be the first friendly creature I have properly acquainted myself with since I found myself here."
Takata smiles at this and nods and takes a step towards the deer. " Well I hope you can find some more Tix, there should be a few around her at the least." She says then looks a little nervous. "May I.. take a look at your neck?" She says frowning guiltily. "I wish to make sure I didn't injure you at all in my little bout of stupidity.." She says looking up at the deer.
Tix nods in agreement with Takata's words of there being possible others out there she could join. As for the neck examining? "Oh, no no. I'm fine, thank you. I don't think I'm so eager to put my neck so close to another animal with sharp teeth, no offence intended." She hovers a little where she stands, observing the fox in case of signs that the vixen had intentions of maybe attacking her in hopes of a meal.
Takata simply nods at this as she does seem to look up but sees no sign of blood around the neck she then shifts and sniffs at t the ground. After a moment or two without a word she slips over to a berry bush and starts to munch away as the berries quite happily. The deer might not have seen Foxes eat so it might come as a surprise when Takata’s starts happily eating at the berries.
Tix shifts backwards a little, clearly wary of the potential danger. Soon she relaxes when the fox moves away and she seems surprised to see the fox digging into the berries instead. "You eat both meat and plants? How?" Curiosity makes the doe forget her wary senses and curiosity carries her over in swift steps to stand with the vixen. She examines the bush and then raises her head to some of the taller bushes reaching over them. Pushing off her front legs and raising up onto her haunces, Tix lifts her head within reach of some of the hanging berries and plucks them from the branch, landing softly on all fours and chewing down, enjoying the meal with Takata.
Takata murrrs as she munches and then she hears the voice of the deer and she looks back blinking her muzzle stained blue with berries. "Me? I eat berries, sometimes grasses, and small critters, and eggs." She says chuckling. "I am more of a Scavenger then a hunter." She says moving back to munching on the berries giving on of the deer legs a soft nuzzle.
Tix chews slowly on the berries, her instincts kicking in and forcing her to look around again in wariness. Being at ease and eating may be the perfect time for a predator to strike. She jolts a little at the unexpected nuzzle, but she doesn't bolt. She smiles down at the vixen before lowering her head to the bush Takata is grazing from, taking her share there instead and showing the sign of trust.
Takata smiles as she leans down and decides not to do anything as she takes the berries instead Takata simply murrs and takes a few more before simply staring up at the towering form above her giving off a comforting and happy murring.

She says realizing that she might have just lost a friend with hat action no matter how playfully she had intended it to be.
