Neena- Female Juvie Cougar
Tanniyn- Male Juvie Cougar
Even though it's usually her sister who gets into trouble for wandering further than she should, Neena just couldn't resist straying /juust/ a bit further than she is allowed to. Ok, so in truth she's wandered a lot further than she is really supposed to, but what could possibly go wrong? After all, she /is/ superstar Neena! As the cub strays further from her home, she soon notices she is coming up on a /huuuge/ body of water. Whoa, now that is cool! The stray cub quickly picks up her pace, not really caring about keeping a look out for things around her.
There's already another stranger to this area at the lake's shore, and like the girl, he's so awe-focused on the lake that his surroundings are for the time being dismissed as inconsequential. Tanniyn is sitting on top of a moss-covered rock, eyes wide as he stares at the vast quantity of water, the likes of which he's never seen before, let alone imagined. Truly unbelievable. And the waterfall to the north--! He wonders if such a geological structure exists in the lands where he's from, where he probably should be right now, and where, no doubt, his father is still asleep. Can't be awake all the time and keep Tan from exploring, nope!
As she gets closer and closer, the lake seems to get even bigger than she first thought it was. Finally, Neena skids to a halt right at the lake's edge and stares at it, eyes wide open in amazement. Wwwhhhooooaaaa!! All she's seen for her entire life is her living area and a some small areas to the south of that, so seeing this huge body of water is such an excitement for the young cub. She's so transfixed by the lake that she doesn't notice anything else around her, let alone if someone else was here as well. "Awesome," she says out loud.
His gaze is transfixed on the watery scene, but when his small ears catch the faint sound of a voice, Tan perks up and turns his head to try and track down the source. "Who said that?" he calls out, hopping down off of the rock and heading in the general direction of where the voice came from. "Hello?" he calls back, a little hesitantly. It's not his father.. who else could it be? A monster?
Neena's ears perk up suddenly as she suddenly hears a voice coming from somewhere. Ripping her gaze from the impressive expance of water, the cub spins her head around to try and find the mystery voice. It doesn't take her long before she spots another cougar about her age heading over towards her... and its a male. Great, just what she needed to ruin the fun time. "Who are /you/?" Neena asks over towards the stranger, a small bit of distaste in her voice.
To say that Tanniyn is taken aback.. would be stating the obvious in the most emphatic way possible. He's /shocked/. Stunned, even, into a long silence as he stands, rooted into place, staring in disbelief at the girl. There's no verbal response. There's barely any physical response either, save for him remembering to breath. His eyes are wide and even a little frightened, staring at this strange creature talking to him. It's.. a cougar.. but it's /not/ a cougar. What IS this thing?
"Hellloooo?" Neena calls once again, barely even hiding the annoyance in her voice. Then again, she probably shouldn't be surprised at this. After all, he /is/ a male and is therefore probably a bit... slower at things than a normal cougar would be. Still, with him just kinda staring at him all wide eyed like that, it's a little creepy. "Are you even in there?" she asks, once again not bothering to hide the annoyance in her voice, getting herself up and slowly walking towards him.
That voice.. it's.. Tanniyn isn't even sure of the right word. Unnatural? And the way that creature looks.. it's so much like another cougar, close to his age, but.. it's not. It can't be! Even the way it smells is weird. And now that it's moving toward him, he finds himself finally free from the stunned paralysis he was in, and nearly trips over his paws trying to scramble backwards. "Wh-what /are/ you?" he asks, voice quavering. Where's his father to protect him when he's needed! Granted, that's the price to pay for exploring unsupervised. But Tan never expected to run into.. /this/! Whatever it is...!
Neena is slightly taken aback when the strange male almost trips over himself trying to get away from her. Jeez what is up with him?! "I'm a /cougar/" she says rather slowly, as if explaining it to a cub. "And so are /you/" Wow, mom really was right about males; not the fastest creatures in the world.
"You really are a cougar?" Tanniyn asks, staring and squinting as though still unable to believe his eyes. Not to mention his ears. It /looks/ like a cougar, for the most part, but.. sure doesn't sound like one! Maybe.. it's sick? He remembers his father telling him about something called 'sick' when creatures didn't feel good and might sometimes act or look or talk oddly. Yes, that's probably it. "Are you.. sick?" He asks, more than just a little bit timidly.
"Yeeesss, I am," Neena nods very slowly, giving the male a look that is a mix of annoyance and confusion. "Haven't you seen another cougar before?" He's sure acting like he hasn't. But surly he must have a Mommy somewhere, just like she does. Maybe this male is just naturally stupid or something. "I'm not sick" she says rather defiantly. "It's /you/ who's acting really weird!"
It's weird, but Tan is pretty sure that this creature-calling-itself-a-cougar is just as confused as he is. "Of /course/ I've seen another cougar before. My daddy. Though /he/ doesn't sound weird like.. like you." It's not meant as an insult. He just honestly doesn't understand. If this creature really isn't sick, and if this creature really is a cougar, then why... does he sound so weird?
When the male says that he's seen another cougar before, it just makes Neena even more confused and makes her assume more that this guy is just plain stupid. She's not sick, she doesn't sound weird, and she's /certainly/ a cougar. Yet this male seems perfectly intent on correcting her on that. Jeez what a dunce. "Well maybe that's because I'm a /girl/!" Neena says, dragging out the last word just in case he neede her to slow down so he could understand.
She's what..? "G..irl?" Tanniyn repeats the strange-sounding word. "What's that? I thought you said you were a cougar!" Hah, he /knew/ better! "Well, you might be a /girl/, but /I'm/ a /cougar/." Beam. "M'name is Tanniyn.. what's yours?" This girl-thing might look like a cougar, but Tan will show it what a /real/ cougar is like! Manners included, of course.
Wait, did she just hear him right? Neena's eyes go wide with amazement that she really did just hear those words come out of his mouth. "Wow, you're really stupid," she finally says out loud, gawking at him with shock. "I'm a /cougar/..." she pauses to let him digest that information... "And I'm also a /girl/." The last question that the male--Tanniyn apparently--asks is just flat out ignored. Why would she give her name to a male, no less an incredibly stupid one.
So much for trying to get the best of her. Tanniyn looks truly baffled now. How can something be a cougar AND be a girl at the same time? No.. this creature must be mistaken. Or lying. But definitely insulting, for sure. "/Not/ stupid!" he protests, looking and sounding hurt. "How can you be a cougar and a girl at the same time? It doesn't make sense!" Maybe his father can explain, although that would require that he confess to exploring without permission, and possibly suffer a punishment. But isn't this /here/ punishment enough? Whatever a girl is, it's certainly not nice. And definitely not /really/ a cougar, even though it looks like one. Maybe being a girl means being sick? Maybe it's sick but doesn't realize it. Or maybe it just uses a different word to mean the same thing? Tanniyn looks slightly relieved, fairly confident that he's solved the mystery.
Neena knew that males were very odd and not better than females, but she never thought that /anyone/ could be this dumb. What exactly does this guy's father teach him?! "Ok look, you are a cougar, right?" she asks, then goes on without waiting for an answer. "But you're also a guy, right?" Again, she doesn't wait. "And /I/ am a cougar, but I'm not a dumb guy, I'm a girl." Hopefully that was slow and easy enough for his male-brain.
Okay... so maybe his solution isn't exactly correct. Now this almost-cougar is introducing even /more/ words! "I'm not a guy!" Tan is quick to correct her, "I'm just a cougar." He's not a guy, and especially not if they're dumb, whatever they are! Not a guy.. not a girl.. just a cougar. Nothing more. "And why don't you tell me your name? Is it because you're a girl? You don't have a name?" That would be /awful/! Maybe only cougars have names, and not girls. But.. what about guys? Better question: what /is/ a guy? /He/ definitely is not, whatever she might say. Nope, he's a cougar, and he has a name! Tanniyn. Yep.
Oh boy, why does she even bother trying to explain this to him? It's pretty obvious that he's not getting the hang of this at all. Maybe he's just naturally stupid. "Ok look, you are a guy and I'm a girl but we're both cougars," she tries to make it even simplier for him, her annoyance with him clearly visable. Why can't he just understand the simpliest of facts there is?! "You can still be a cougar /and/ a guy, just like your Daddy is a cougar and a guy. I'm a cougar and a girl, and my Mommy is a cougar and a girl."
No.. pretty sure not! If he were a guy, his father would have told him! Obviously. Before today, he's never even heard the word before, in reference to either him /or/ his father. And what is a 'Mommy'? How complicated can this possibly get? It's easier just to see cougars as cougars, with none of this extra confusion piled on. Tanniyn is halfway tempted to ask her, but decides he really doesn't like being made fun of, so with an obvious effort, he stifles all of the questions that beg to be asked. Narrowing his eyes, he suddenly turns around and starts walking off, back toward the rock where he was perched originally. At least the /water/ doesn't make fun of him when he looks at it, and it's not a girl either! Or.. is it? Suddenly watching the water doesn't seem like it would be as much fun anymore. What if it /is/ a girl, too? Or sick? Tanniyn decides to head home before anything else happens. His head hurts.
Finally, he's doing something smart for a change, leaving. "Ask your Daddy about it!" she calls over to him, before turning around and heading in the opposite direction and back home. Suddenly, the huge lake doesn't seem that fun anymore. Not if the area has been contaminated with stupid male disease. Hopefully she doesn't run into him again, since she would most likely be bombarded with the simpliest of questions again and he'd be too stupid to see the answers. Jeez. At least Mommy will make her feel better... saying she isn't mad that she strayed all the way out here.
